GLENDALE, Ariz. — Patrick Mahomes shook off an ankle injury, turned back into a magician and pulled out another comeback on the biggest stage to help the Kansas City Chiefs win their second Super Bowl in four years.

Mahomes threw two touchdown passes in the fourth quarter and scrambled 26 yards on the go-ahead drive before Harrison Butker kicked a 27-yard field goal with 8 seconds left to give the Chiefs a 38-35 victory over the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday night.

Mahomes and Hurts excelled in the first Super Bowl matchup featuring two Black starting QBs. But Mahomes, the two-time AP NFL MVP, turned it up in the second half after reaggravating a sprained right ankle.

Chiefs coach Andy Reid, who couldn't win the big game in Philadelphia, beat his former team to earn his second ring with Mahomes and the Chiefs.

With the score tied at 35-35, the Eagles tried to let the Chiefs score a touchdown with under two minutes left so they could get the ball back. But Jerick McKinnon slid at the 2, forcing the Eagles to use their last timeout.

After Mahomes took a knee two times, Butker nailed his kick, sending thousands of red-clad Chiefs fans into a frenzy.

The Chiefs won their second Super Bowl following the 2019 season, 50 years after the first one. It took just three years to get another Lombardi.

Chiefs fans were outnumbered in the stadium, but they did their part to silence the boisterous Philly fans with the tomahawk chop chant.

Down 24-14 with a limping Mahomes, the Chiefs followed up Rihanna's electrifying halftime performance with a sensational offensive outburst.

Mahomes, who suffered a high ankle sprain in the divisional round, hurt it again on a 3-yard scramble late in the second quarter. He limped off the field but showed no ill effects on Kansas City's next possession.

Mahomes slipped — several players lost their footing on the natural grass surface — in the pocket yet somehow regained his balance and scrambled 14 yards to the Eagles 4, setting up Isiah Pacheco's 1-yard TD run that cut the deficit to 24-21.

After Jake Elliott's 33-yard field goal extended Philadelphia's lead to 27-21, the Chiefs struck again.

Mahomes tossed a 5-yard TD pass to a wide-open Kardarius Toney to give Kansas City its first lead, 28-27, early in the fourth quarter.

The Chiefs tightened up their defense, forcing Philly to punt. Then Toney returned a line-drive kick 65 yards to the Eagles 5 for the longest punt return in Super Bowl history.

On third down from the 4, Mahomes connected with Skyy Moore to extend their lead to 35-27. Moore also was wide open on the play.

Hurts hit DeVonta Smith for a 46-yard gain to the Chiefs and ran in for his third score of the game. He also ran in for the 2-point conversion to tie it at 35-35 with 5:15 to go.

As "Fly! Eagles! Fly!" reverberated throughout the stadium, Mahomes and the Chiefs went back to work.

The 27-year-old Mahomes became the third player to win his second NFL MVP award before age 28. He also became the youngest QB to start three Super Bowls. Then, Mahomes became the first player to win the Super Bowl the same season he was MVP after nine straight players lost.

Just five years after winning the first Super Bowl in franchise history, the Eagles came close with a new coach — Nick Sirianni — and new quarterback — Hurts.

Hurts set a Super Bowl record with 70 yards rushing and tied a record with three rushing scores.

The Eagles marched 75 yards down the field with Hurts scoring from the 1 for a 7-0 lead, and controlled the ball for almost 22 minutes in the first half.

Hurts, who missed two games late in the season with a shoulder injury, had no trouble throwing a perfect deep ball to A.J. Brown, giving the Eagles a 14-7 lead with a 45-yard connection on the first play of the second quarter.

But Hurts then made a rare mistake on the next drive when he fumbled without being hit while scrambling away from pressure. Nick Bolton picked it up and raced 36 yards for a score that made it 14-14. Hurts had just eight turnovers this season, six picks and two fumbles.

He took off for 14 yards on the first play after the fumble. On fourth-and-5 from Chiefs 44, Hurts ran 28 yards. He finished off the drive with a 4-yard TD run to put Philadelphia ahead 21-14.

Elliott kicked a 35-yard field goal to send the Eagles into halftime leading 24-14.

Mahomes connected with Travis Kelce on an 18-yard TD pass in the right corner to tie it at 7-7 in the first quarter. The Chiefs' All-Pro tight end and Eagles All-Pro center Jason Kelce became the first set of brothers to play against each other in the Super Bowl.

Their mom, Donna Kelce, wore a half-red, half-green jersey with No. 87 on the front for Travis and No. 62 on the back for Jason. She sat in a suite between NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and Damar Hamlin.

Eagles fans turned State Farm Stadium into a sea of green, chanting "E-A-G-L-E-S!" and singing the team's fight song after each score. But they left disappointed.

Reid won more games than any coach in team history during 14 seasons with the Eagles but the one knock against him was that he couldn't win the big one. Reid finally earned his ring with the Chiefs when they beat San Francisco in the Super Bowl following the 2019 season. They went back the next year and lost to Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The first Super Bowl involving both No. 1 seeds since the Eagles beat the Patriots in February 2018 lived up to its hype. It was the third-highest scoring Super Bowl and the Eagles scored the most points by a losing team.

Plenty of celebrities were the Eagles fans wearing, including Bradley Cooper and Kevin Hart, who wore a Reggie White No. 92 jersey.

Paul McCartney and LeBron James also were in the crowd of 67,827.

🏈 Super Bowl magic: Mahomes, Chiefs beat Eagles 38-35

WABAUNSEE COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating wanted suspect on multiple charges after a wrong-way chase on Interstate 70 and manhunt.

On February 9, a sheriff's deputy made contact with a suspicious motorist on Interstate 70, according to a media release from the&nbsp;Wabaunsee County Sheriff’s Office. The driver, later identified as 36-year-old Brandon M Capps, refused to identify himself and drove away, the wrong way down the interstate.

Air and ground assets including the Kansas Highway Patrol responded to assist the deputy. During the chase and search, Wabaunsee County officials also learned Capps was wanted in Florida on active violent crime warrants, according to the release.

Just after arriving on the scene, Sgt. Ralph Dunn found tire tracks that led off I-70. He followed the tracks and found the vehicle abandoned. Law enforcement then established a perimeter and ultimately captured Capps.

He is being held in the Wabaunsee County jail on requested charges of flee or attempt to elude, fleeing from justice, reckless driving, interference with law enforcement and aggravated battery on law enforcement.

MANHATTAN - Riley County Police Department is asking for any information on a suspected hit and run on the evening of Saturday, February 12.

Around 9:30 pm, RCPD officers were called to the 4700 block of Skyway Drive.

A 30-year-old man was found on the side of the road with injuries consistent with being hit by a vehicle.

The man was initially transported by Riley County EMS to Ascension Via Christi in Manhattan and was later transported to Stormont Vail in Topeka for treatment of his injuries.

According to RCPD, the pedestrian remains in critical condition.

RILEY COUNTY—A man died in an accident just before 4:30p.m. Saturday in Riley County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2015 Ford F150 driven by Brian J. Butts, 60, Bridgeton, Missouri, was westbound on Interstate 70 just before Tallgrass Road.

The pickup crossed the center median continued through the eastbound lanes into the South ditch, struck a concrete culvert, became airborne, landed on its front end and overturned.

Butts was pronounced dead at the scene and was transported to Frontier Forensics. He was not wearing a seat belt, according to the KHP.

They made everyone feel comfortable in their presence and helped a young guy from Hays become their congressman and later senator. If you were to look for a role model citizen, copy Jack. His legacy will live on in the K-State students who study agriculture and the Kansas farms and ranches that will continue to be passed from generation to generation thanks to Jack’s contributions to our state.”

From the Vanier family: To call Jack Vanier a founding father of a bygone rural Kansas culture would be three things at once. An understatement, a compliment and a chance for Jack to respond in his characteristic unassuming nature&nbsp;—&nbsp;accompanied by that brilliant smile&nbsp;—&nbsp;that he was just doing what came naturally. In his self-effacing, low-key way, it would also offer a golden opportunity for Jack to take issue with the&nbsp;"bygone"&nbsp;sentiment. Soft-spoken and successful. Kind and productive. Reliable and generous. If someone were to ask,&nbsp;"What does it mean to be called&nbsp;'the salt of the Earth?'"&nbsp;One would only need to spend a few minutes talking about Jack Vanier to get a deep and meaningful sense. Jack grew up on the bedrock of honesty. He came of age with a work ethic. Integrity drove his success in business. With his bride, Donna, he raised a family on faith. Jack Vanier did not struggle with a greater cosmic meaning of why he was here, and that's what made him such a good husband, father and grandfather, rancher and businessman. 'Jack' Vanier passed away at the age of 94.From the Vanier family: To call Jack Vanier a founding father of a bygone rural Kansas culture would be three things at once. An understatement, a compliment and a chance for Jack to respond in his characteristic unassuming nature&nbsp;—&nbsp;accompanied by that brilliant smile&nbsp;—&nbsp;that he was just doing what came naturally. In his self-effacing, low-key way, it would also offer a golden opportunity for Jack to take issue with the&nbsp;"bygone"&nbsp;sentiment. Soft-spoken and successful. Kind and productive. Reliable and generous. If someone were to ask,&nbsp;"What does it mean to be called&nbsp;'the salt of the Earth?'"&nbsp;One would only need to spend a few minutes talking about Jack Vanier to get a deep and meaningful sense. Jack grew up on the bedrock of honesty. He came of age with a work ethic. Integrity drove his success in business. With his bride, Donna, he raised a family on faith. Jack Vanier did not struggle with a greater cosmic meaning of why he was here, and that's what made him such a good husband, father and grandfather, rancher and businessman. That's what made him such a good friend. He loved his neighbor and walked humbly. His sense of humor put you at ease as soon as you encountered him. Jack Vanier was fun to be around. Born in Salina, Kansas,&nbsp;to John J.&nbsp;"J.J."&nbsp;and Lesta Vanier,&nbsp;Jack operated the CK Ranch in Brookville, Kansas&nbsp;—&nbsp;once the largest producer of purebred Hereford cattle in the country. The family also held ranching interests in Wyoming, Colorado and Oklahoma. Jack offered his gift of service and leadership capacity to a host of organizations, including the American Hereford Association, the Kansas Livestock Association, the Boards of Directors of the National Cattlemen's Association and Archer Daniels Midland&nbsp;— roles in which he provided wisdom and insight, but mostly what he would have described as common sense.&nbsp; And while much has changed in Kansas and the world during Jack Vanier's time on this planet, his passing is not the end of an era. Jack's legacy is with us today. You see it in Mary's compassion for her community, in Marty's brilliant smile and intellect, in the life lessons John learned from his father. TOPEKA — Lieutenant Governor and Secretary of Commerce David Toland today announced the Kansas Office of Broadband Development will take its “Kansas Broadband Roadshow” across the state beginning this week.&nbsp;Starting in Emporia on Wednesday, Feb. 15, Broadband staff will travel the state to learn directly from Kansans about internet access and its availability in their communities.

One of the stops will be from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Feb. 28 at the Manhattan Conference Center, 410 S. Third.

The meetings will give the Broadband Office a grassroots understanding of the current connectivity landscape throughout Kansas to develop an effective five-year strategic action plan and support statewide digital equity.

“Now more than ever, reliable broadband is necessary to support employment, lifelong learning, access to essential services and strong family relationships,”Lieutenant Governor and Secretary of Commerce&nbsp;David Toland said. “By listening to diverse communities across the state, we will be able to better address the specific challenges different areas face as we work toward Governor Kelly’s goal of getting every Kansan who wants access connected by 2030.”

The Office of Broadband officially kicked off its engagement process on January 19 at the inaugural Kansas Broadband Summit. Staff gathered input from invested communities and partners to ensure strategic engagement. The upcoming public meetings will allow Kansans from across the state the chance to discuss their experiences, needs and opportunities as it relates to high-speed access and development.

The office will hold events at 25 to 30 locations around the state. Special attention will be paid to groups and communities that historically have been disproportionately impacted by digital inequities. These groups include low-income households, aging populations, people with disabilities or language barriers, racial and ethnic minorities, rural inhabitants, incarcerated individuals, and veterans.

“Before funds are allocated for broadband support, states are tasked with creating a strategic, thoughtful approach to using the dollars they will receive to bring broadband to underserved communities,”&nbsp;said Jade Piros de Carvalho, Director of the Office of Broadband Development. “This listening tour will be foundational in the creation and strategic development of a planning document to connect and support all Kansans.”

Plans will be submitted to the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) before funds are dispersed. All 50 U.S. states and six territories applied for planning grant funding from the Broadband, Equity, Access and Deployment (BEAD) program and the Digital Equity Act program. Grant awards for all 56 eligible entities will be announced on a rolling basis.

The listening tours will consist of both onsite and virtual focus groups. Pancakes for Pawnee is an annual fundraiser benefiting Pawnee Mental Health. In its fifth year, this event raises money to help pay for mental health services for those who cannot afford them.

 event will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 21, at the west side Early 
Edition Restaurant located at 3210 Kimball Ave. from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Each 
meal consists of a large Early Edition pancake, sausage, and a 
color-changing cup that can be used to receive free refills of soda, 
tea, or coffee at any Early Edition Restaurant in Manhattan until next 
year’s event.

REPUBLIC COUNTY —One person was injured in an accident just before 8a.m. Friday in Republic County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2021 GMC Terrain driven by Amber Cherney, 22, Cuba, Kansas, was southbound on 260 Road just north of Shady Road.

The driver swerved and the SUV entered the east ditch. It struck a field entrance, became airborne, landed on the south side of the field entrance and struck the field side embankment. 

The SUV spun 180 degrees, struck a barbed wire fence and came to rest up against the barbed wire fence on its wheels.

EMS transported Cherney to the Republic County Hospital in Belleville. She was not wearing a seat belt, according to the KHP.

 'Path2Better' campaign to provide items to Be Able Community

POTTAWATOMIE COUNTY - On Tuesday, February 7th, 2023, the Pottawatomie County Dispatch received a 911 call around 12:43 pm reporting a structure fire in the 400 block of E. Plum Street, Louisville, Kansas.

Upon arrival crews discovered a mobile home with smoke coming from the inside.

A father and son exited the mobile home with minor injuries prior to emergency crews arriving on scene.

Sheriff's Deputies learned during the incident that a methamphetamine lab was inside the residence.

Deputies searched the residence, after executing a search warrant and the fire was extinguished.

As a result of the search warrant, two men were arrested and transported to the Pottawatomie County Jail.

Odis Leon Parker, 80, Louisville, was arrested on charges of Manufacturing a Controlled Substance, Criminal Use of Weapons, Possession of Paraphernalia with Intent to Manufacture a Controlled Substance, Possession of Stimulant, Possession of Marijuana, and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. &nbsp;He is currently confined in the Pottawatomie County Jail on a $10,000 bond

Odis Leon Parker Jr., 47, Louisville, was booked on charges of Manufacturing a Controlled Substance, Possession of Paraphernalia with Intent to Manufacture a Controlled Substance, Arson; Accidental to Dwelling by Manufacturing a Controlled Substance, and Aggravated Battery. He is currently confined in the Pottawatomie County Jail on a $10,000 bond&nbsp;&nbsp;

MANHATTAN - The KSU Foundation has announced a private donation will fund the renovation of the former Campus Ecumenical Center into the new home for K-State's food pantry, Cats' Cupboard.

The new location will increase the pantry's size from just 800 square feet to 8,000 square feet, providing enhanced space to continue promoting student health, success and well-being for students facing food insecurity.

Additional improvements include better parking and visibility, along with improved accessibility, increased&nbsp;storage capacity, space for packaging bulk food items and pick-up orders, walk-in and reach-in coolers and freezers, and a loading dock that will allow for larger deliveries of donated food and supplies.

"Since 2017, Cats' Cupboard has served K-State with access to nutritious food and support from Fairchild Hall," said Shelly Williams, Morrison family director of Cats' Cupboard. "While we remain grateful for the space, we have outgrown it and are eager for the opportunities that come with this incredible upgrade. In addition to increased visibility and access, the new space offers gardening and educational opportunities; greater capacity to accept, store and repack bulk donations; and the ability to distribute frozen products. Cats' Cupboard aims to cultivate a transformational experience, where every Wildcat — no matter their background or circumstance — is confident in their ability to feed themselves and their households while obtaining a degree at Kansas State University."

The remodel of the new location is expected to be completed by August 2023 and was made possible by a donation from David and Tracy Lockton of Naples, Florida.

“When we recognized this opportunity, it checked a lot of boxes for us: excellent organizational leadership, helping students become self-sufficient, and supporting good health for our community,” said David Lockton. “It’s exciting to be part of this project that will allow such a significant increase in resources for K-State students experiencing food insecurity. We look forward to seeing these plans come to life over the next few months.” David is a 1975 graduate of K-State’s College of Business Administration.

MANHATTAN - Riley County Police Department is asking for assistance identifying a man in connection with a theft from Menards.

RCPD says on February 5th, a man stole a vinyl sliding window, a Bosch impact wrench, a WaterBoss water softener; along with Snapper and Generac generators, were taken from Menards in Manhattan.

The items, valued around $2,780, were put in a cart and taken out to a red truck parked near the entrance to Menards.

The truck appears to be a Chevrolet Silverado.

An unknown man helped load the stolen items into the waiting truck.

RCPD: Attempt to identify man in connection with Menards theft

RILEY COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities investigating an alleged arson fire at Manhattan High School have made an arrest.

Just after 10a.m. Thursday, police arrested 16-year-old Jason Lucas of Manhattan&nbsp;in the 2300 block of Oak Street&nbsp; after he was found in his vehicle in possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

In addition to the drug allegations, police arrested Lucas on requested charges of aggravated arson in connection to a November 28,&nbsp; incident at Manhattan High School in the&nbsp;2100 block of Poyntz Avenue.&nbsp; It was reported he set a bathroom soap dispenser on fire during school hours.&nbsp;A teacher with a fire extinguisher  quickly put the fire out.  

Lucas was transported to the North Central Kansas Regional Juvenile Detention Facility in Junction City on the requested arson charge and&nbsp; for possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, and possession of an electronic cigarette by a minor.

MANHATTAN - On Tuesday, February 7, 2023, the Manhattan City Commissioners voted 3-2 to approve Ordinance No. 7629.

Ordinance No. 7629 amends section 2-15 of the Code of Ordinances to prohibit dual office holding by&nbsp; a City Commissioner while simultaneously serving in other local, state, federal or partisan elective office.

This decision was made following the appointment of City Commissioner Usha Reddi to fill the Kansas State Senate position opening left vacant by retiring State Senator Tom Hawk.

Riley County Arrest Report February 8

MANHATTAN - Riley County Police have arrested a third suspect in the February 5, 2022 homicide of Joshua Wardi in Aggieville.

27-year-old Edward Wright of Junction City was arrested on February 7th, 2023, for his involvement in the homicide.

Wright was arrested on a Riley County District Court (RCDC) Warrant for first-degree murder and three counts of aggravated assault.

Wright remains confined to the Riley County Jail on a total bond of $500,000.

Police previously arrested 24-year-old Jordan Prather of Junction City on January 7, 2023 on a RCDC warrant with the same charges as Wright.

Also arrested in connection with the homicide is 19-year-old Tremelle R. Montgomery of Fort Riley on February 9, 2022.

Student ambassadors gain valuable leadership experience and are offered scholarship opportunities based on involvement.&nbsp; The College of Arts and Sciences student ambassadors aim to promote pride in and develop awareness of the college among prospective students, parents, alumni and the public. All students in the college are eligible to apply for the program.
