Riley County Arrest Report November 28

TOPEKA, KAN. – A Kansas man has been charged through criminal complaint in Topeka, Kansas, following an incident on a federal military installation, according to the United State's Attorney.

According to court documents, Jordan Thompson, 24, of Galena is charged with two counts of assault with a deadly weapon for allegedly assaulting two people on November 24, 2023, while at Fort Riley.

The defendant made his initial court appearance Monday before U.S. Magistrate Judge Rachel E. Schwartz of the U.S. District Court for the District of Kansas. If convicted, he faces a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison on each count.

The Department of Army Criminal Investigation Division, Fort Riley Department of the Army Civilian Police, Kansas Bureau of Investigation, Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the Butler County Sheriff’s Office are investigating the case.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Stephen Hunting and Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Robin Graham are prosecuting the case.

MANHATTAN - The Kansas County and District Attorney's Association presented it's annual Prosecutor of the Year award at the fall conference on October 19th.

The 2022 - 2023 Prosecutor of the Year award was presented to Riley County Deputy Attorney, Bethany Fields.

Fields was recognized for her work in obtaining convictions in jury trial including:&nbsp;State v. Leaonard, State v. Colwell, State v. Meeks and State v. Hall.

In addition, Ms. Field presented at CASA training in January and October of 2023 and was the presenter at Child First in March of 2023.

Fields also serves on the Child Advocacy Center, and the Riley/Clay County Community Corrections Advisory Boards.&nbsp;

Ms. Bethany Fields has been with the Riley County Attorney's Office since January 2005, and was previously an Assistant Douglas County Attorney.

Riley County Arrest Report November 27

MANHATTAN - On Monday, November 27th at 6:00 pm at Crestview Christian Church, 'The First Day' film screening will be free to attend.

The Riley County Health Department has partnered with the Pottawatomie and Geary County Health Departments, along with the City of Manhattan and the City of Wamego to bring a free screening of the film, 'The First Day' to residents in the area.

'The First Day' is a film to raise awareness about substance misuse.

According to the Riley County Health Department, raising awareness is the first step towards making meaningful change.

This powerful, emotional film challenges the idea of who is vulnerable to substance misuse and addiction.&nbsp;

Working together and supporting each other will give the opportunity to change the outcome of someone's life.

The film is 45 minutes long, and there will be a brief discussion following the film.&nbsp;

The film is intended for community members who are middle school aged students and older.

No reservations or tickets are needed to attend.

If you cannot attend the Monday night viewing, there will be a second free screening in Junction City on Wednesday, November 29th at 6:00 pm at the CL Hoover Opera House.

Manhattan— Authorities are investigating the cause of a fire in Manhattan.

Just before 5 p.m. Sunday, the Manhattan Fire Department was dispatched to a fire at 422 Redwood Place, according to a media release.

 Upon arrival, crews found a mobile home with smoke showing. The fire was contained within 10 minutes.&nbsp; The mobile home was not occupiable after the fire.The structure was a 1977 single-wide mobile home.&nbsp; No one was home at the time of the fire. Loss is estimated at $10,000 to contents and $10,000 to the structure.&nbsp; 

The owner is Benjamin Harmon of the same address. There were no injuries reported.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2016 International semi driven by Larry B. Pettay, 64, Ohiowa, Nebraska, was westbound on Interstate 70 one mile east of Solomon.

The semi rear-ended a 2005 Chevy Equinox driven by Candace A&nbsp;Johansen, 59, Manhattan, in the driving lane.

EMS transported Johansen to Abilene Memorial Hospital. Pettay was not injured. Both drivers were properly restrained, according to the KHP.

Joining me for the program are Tracy Geisler, executive director of the Geary Community Healthcare&nbsp; Foundation, JCPD Captain Cory Odell and Brynne Haverkamp, Crisis Service Director for Pawnee Mental Health.  This all ties together because the funds raised at the December 9th GCHF&nbsp; ”Puttin’ on the Glitz Masquerade Ball” will be used to help support Co-Responder. The program joins a licensed mental health professional with Junction City police officers in responding to calls when mental health intervention is needed.  My guests explain how this partnership would be established between Pawnee and the JCPD and the mission of the Geary Community Health Foundation to support the effort.

POTTAWATOMIE COUNTY —One person was injured in an accident just before 1:30p.m. Friday in Pottawatomie County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2010 Ford Edge driven by Briana R. Fisher, 23,&nbsp; Paxico, was southbound on Lake Elbo Road waiting to turn right onto U.S. 24.

The driver failed to yield to westbound traffic and struck a 2012 Toyota Prius driven by Kennetta&nbsp;Nold, 52, Saint George.

After impact both vehicle struck a northbound 2018 Buick Enclave driven by Kera&nbsp;Friesen, 37, Overland Park, who was turning left onto U.S. 24.

EMS transported Fisher to the hospital in Manhattan. Nold and&nbsp;Friesen were not injured. Juveniles were present in the Buick and Toyota; juvenile record protected data, according to the KHP. The drivers were properly restrained, according to the KHP.

Kansas woman hospitalized after 3-vehicle Pott. Co. crash

RILEY COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating another case of a gun taken from a vehicle in Manhattan.

Just after 9:30a.m. Tuesday, officers filed a report for burglary in the 900 block of Garden Way in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

A 55-year-old woman reported an unknown suspect took a Sig Sauer P365 9MM and two magazines containing rounds from her vehicle.

RCPD: Another gun taken from vehicle in Manhattan

TOPEKA, Kan. — This morning, the Kansas Corporation Commission approved a proposed settlement agreement in the Evergy rate case. The unanimous agreement, resolving all issues in the case, was submitted to the Commission on September 29 following negotiations between KCC staff, Evergy, the Citizens Utility Ratepayer Board, and a variety of groups representing commercial, educational, and environmental interests. &nbsp;

In its Application, Evergy sought a net revenue increase of $204 million (9.77% increase) for Evergy Kansas Central (formerly Westar) and a net revenue increase of $14 million (1.95% increase) for Evergy Kansas Metro (formerly KCP&amp;L).&nbsp; Under the approved settlement agreement, Evergy Kansas Central will receive a net revenue increase of $74 million (3.54% increase), and Evergy Kansas Metro will receive a net revenue decrease of $32.9 million (4.53% decrease).

The average monthly impact to residential customers will be an increase of $4.64 per month for Evergy Kansas Central customers and a decrease of $6.07 per month for Evergy Metro customers. The new rates will take effect based on the customer billing cycle date beginning December 21, 2023.

Today’s order states, “The Commission finds the agreed-upon rates will provide Evergy sufficient revenue to meet its financial obligations and provide safe and reliable service at just and reasonable rates to its customers.&nbsp; After considering all of the terms of the Unanimous Settlement Agreement, the Commission finds it is in the public interest.”

The settlement agreement also states Evergy may file an abbreviated rate case within 12 months of the current order to update rates to include Panasonic related distribution investment, Wolf Creek Decommissioning Trust adjustment, and investment in a new renewable generating resource to address 2024-2026 resource adequacy requirements supported by Evergy’s Integrated Resource Plan.

The Commission received comments from ratepayers at three public hearings held in July. In addition, the Commission also received 3,915 public comments through its Office of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection. The Commission noted that today’s decision was issued with due consideration of those comments.

Commissioners also considered the extensive evidentiary record in the docket including testimony from 57 witnesses, approximately 1,000 data requests, the joint motion in support of the settlement agreement and related testimony filed by parties in the docket. Having reviewed the record as a whole, the Commission finds the settlement agreement is supported by substantial, competent evidence.

RILEY COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating alleged criminal damage involving a Junction City man.

Just after 1a.m. Tuesday, officers filed a report for criminal damage to property, criminal trespass, and possession of a controlled substance in Ogden, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

Police arrested 19-year-old Azucena Jimenez Duran of Junction City on requested charges of possession of opiate, narcotic, or certain stimulant, criminal damage to property, criminal trespass, and another instance of criminal damage to property. 

Jimenez Duran is being held on a bond of $8,000.&nbsp;

K-State partners with the U.S. Department of Transportation will host transportation safety workers from across the Midwest to work together to find solutions to reduce the number of roadway deaths.

The summit will host more than 250 people, including trucking staff, industry partners from both small and large motor carriers; also state transportation engineers and behavioral safety staff, university partners, safety advocacy groups,&nbsp;state and local law enforcement partners, truck insurance companies, and partners from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the Federal Highway Administration.

Regional leaders attending include Mayor Quinton Lucas,&nbsp;Kansas City, Missouri; Mayor Tyrone Garner,&nbsp;Kansas City, Kansas; Lynda Tran, director of the U.S. Department of Transportation; Robin Hutcheson, administrator for the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration; Jason Ahten, senior director of fleet safety at Walmart; and K.C.
