Washington&nbsp;–Kansas&nbsp;U.S. Senator Roger Marshall, visited&nbsp;Sierra Vista, Arizona Friday to tour the Joint Task Force-Southern Border Command&nbsp;offices, thank members of Kansas’ own 1st&nbsp;Infantry Division from Fort Riley, participate in tours along the southern border, receive briefings, and take an aerial tour of the border near Arizona with several Kansas law enforcement officials, according to a media release from the Senator's office.

Having visited the southern border multiple times under the Biden-Harris Administration, I witnessed chaos, lawlessness, and a system overwhelmed by over 10 million illegal crossings –including individuals on the FBI’s terrorist watchlist,”&nbsp;said Senator Marshall.&nbsp;“But during my most recent trip, the difference was clear. Since President Trump returned to office, we’ve already seen a dramatic shift with illegal border crossings dropping 93% compared to last year. What I’ve witnessed firsthand at the border proves that President Trump’s bold leadership is delivering results, and he is keeping his promises. To continue delivering on the President’s agenda, the Senate must pass the ‘One Big, Beautiful Bill’ – legislation that will provide critical funding our border agencies need to keep America safe.”

Since President Trump took office in January 2025, the number of illegal immigrant crossings at the southern border has dropped dramatically. In April 2024, there were&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.cbp.gov/newsroom/national-media-release/cbp-releases-april-2024-monthly-update">128,900 crossings at the border</a>, while in April 2025, there&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.cbsnews.com/news/migrant-crossings-u-s-mexico-border-historically-low-levels/">were only 8,400</a>.

The Kansas law enforcement officers who accompanied Senator Marshall included Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) Director Tony Mattivi, Director of the Riley County Police Department Brian Peete, Sedgwick County Sheriff Jeffery Easter, Crawford County Sheriff Billy Tomasi, Ellis County Sheriff and Kansas Sheriffs’ Association President Scott Braun, Hugoton Police Chief and Kansas Association of Chiefs of Police President Courtney Leslie, and Kansas City, Kansas Police Chief Karl Oakman.

The decision follows an internal review of the program’s outcome and structure and will be carried out in accordance with&nbsp;available funding, the statutory framework established under&nbsp;the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act, and congressional notification requirements. &nbsp;

The pause of operations at all contractor-operated Job Corps centers will occur by June 30, 2025. As the transition begins, the department is collaborating with state and local workforce partners to assist current students in advancing their training and connecting them with education and employment opportunities.&nbsp;

The department’s decision aligns with the President’s FY 2026 budget proposal. Little Apple Post checked with the local Flint Hills Job Corps Center and learned that this decision will affect that facility, which serves about 180 students.&nbsp;

I am writing this letter to notify you of the upcoming changes at my office located at 327 E Chestnut here in Junction City, Kansas. For over a span of 4 decades I have enjoyed practicing medicine here in Northeast Kansas and helping you achieve good health. In many instances I have treated 3 generations of the same family and still have several of you who are living beyond 100 years. That is incredible and admirable! However, Father Time has caught up to me and I now find it necessary to slow down and begin passing the torch to the next generation of healers.

It is with excitement and great pleasure that my office will begin to slowly merge with Manhattan Medical Group, headed up by Dr. Priyantha Ranaweera. Dr. Ranaweera is a personal friend and over the decades has provided excellent care to patients throughout Northeast Kansas. In fact, many of our patients are already established with him.

Harvard trained Dr. Ranaweera has already established a team of other physicians and mid level practitioners that will assist me in continuing the care that you, our patients have come to expect.

Beginning May 30th, 2025 my office will slowly transition our patients care over to Manhattan Medical Group, who will have a new office location here in Junction City, date and location to be announced. In the meantime, I will continue to see patients in my office as usual, but this office will close this current location no later than October 5th, 2025. We aim to provide a seamless transition of your care. Your record will remain HIPPA protected.

As most of you know, I am blessed with one of the largest practices in Northeast Kansas, something I am very proud of. The City of Manhattan announced that starting&nbsp;Monday, June 9, the first phase of Anderson Avenue water, street, and stormwater improvements will begin, starting with the section between Connecticut Avenue and Timberlane Drive/College Heights Road.

While this section will not be fully closed, it will have shifting lane closures and many residential intersections will be closed. Through traffic may prefer to use other east-west arterials such as Claflin Road, Fort Riley Boulevard, and Kimball Avenue.

The Army announced that the Fort Riley Transition Assistance Program is hosting the “Hiring Our Heroes Career Summit” June 10 at Riley’s Community Center, 446 Seitz Avenue on Post. Morning workshops run from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., followed by a hiring fair, featuring more than 70 local, regional, and national employers, from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. The career summit will kick off with a networking reception for job seekers to connect with prospective employers June 9, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Rocking K’s in Manhattan.

The career summit is a specialized event designed to educate, inform, inspire, and connect the military community with military-ready employers. All service members, military spouses, veterans, and veterans’ caregivers are invited.

The morning workshops will cover topics including SkillBridge programs, fellowships, internships, professional development, and using platforms such as LinkedIn. Counselors will also be on hand to review resumes and offer job search tips. Participants should be prepared to interview for job opportunities. MANHATTAN, Kansas – Josie Strauss of the Chapman FFA chapter won first place in the Agricultural Education Proficiency at the 97th Kansas FFA Convention, May 28–30, 2025, on the Kansas State University campus.

Strauss will receive the option to compete at the National FFA Convention against other competitors from across the United States, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The National FFA Convention will be held from Oct. 29 through Nov. 1, 2025, in Indianapolis, Indiana.

The Agricultural Education Proficiency is designed to relate to education and extension, including, but not limited to, youth mentoring, agricultural education departmental assistants, PALS mentors and student coordinators, developing and conducting informational materials and presentations for civic organizations and school-aged youth, and students who are involved in SAEs surrounding educating the public about the broad topics of agriculture, agriculture education and FFA.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Ford is recalling more than a million vehicles due to a software issue that can cause the rearview camera to malfunction, increasing the chance of an accident, government auto regulators said.

The software error, which Ford reported to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration earlier this month, may cause the rearview camera image to delay, freeze or not display when the vehicle is in reverse.

The problem will be fixed by a dealer or via an "over-the-air" update at a later date. A preliminary letter notifying owners of the safety risk is expected to be mailed June 16, with a second letter to be sent once the update is available, expected sometime in the third quarter of 2025.

The following Ford vehicles — a total of 1,075,299 — are included in the recall:

2023-2024 F-250, F-350, F-450, F-550, F-600

Owners can contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for the recall is 25S49.

 The Department of Government Efficiency has canceled four National Science Foundation grants worth more than $4.3 million that were awarded to the University of Kansas and Kansas State University, citing the programs as “wasteful DEI grants.”

The Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE, announced the cancellations through its “savings” website, which listed terminations of three KU grants on April 25 and May 2, and one grant to K-State on May 2.

The decision is part of a larger effort by DOGE and the NSF to review and terminate what they describe as non-priority grants. In an April 18 post on X, formerly Twitter, the NSF said it was ending awards “not aligned with agency priorities” and reaffirmed its commitment to “creating opportunities for all Americans everywhere, without exclusion of any groups.”

DOGE claims the cancellations will save the federal government nearly $1.5 million, despite the total value of the grants exceeding $4.3 million. The move is part of a broader sweep that has resulted in the termination of hundreds of NSF-funded projects, many of them tied to diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives.

Two of the canceled grants — one each to KU and K-State — were part of the Louis Stokes Alliances for Minority Participation program. The LSAMP initiative aims to diversify the STEM workforce by increasing the number of underrepresented students earning degrees in science, technology, engineering and math.

The KU LSAMP grant supported a partnership with Pittsburg State University, the University of Nebraska, Southeast Community College, Johnson County Community College and Kansas City Kansas Community College. K-State’s grant, similarly aimed at building STEM pathways in Kansas, listed partners including Wichita State University and multiple community colleges across the state.

Another KU grant, awarded under the joint NSF-NIH SCISIPBIO initiative, focused on examining the career barriers faced by Black biomedical scientists. The study planned to build a dataset of more than 2 million individual faculty members to evaluate disparities in academic success metrics such as publications, citations and grant funding.

A separate KU grant targeted barriers faced by underserved, post-traditional engineering students — including those who are older, attend college part-time or support families. The research aimed to inform engineering programs about policy changes that could improve retention among such students, particularly those from economically disadvantaged and minority backgrounds.

The cancellation of these grants has raised concern among education advocates and researchers who argue that programs designed to support underrepresented communities in STEM are critical for long-term workforce development and innovation.

The cuts follow the recent resignation of the NSF director, raising further questions about the future direction of federal science funding and the role of diversity initiatives in higher education.

‘Tiny Titans: Dinosaur Eggs and Babies’ open at Flint Hills Discovery Center

The Geary County Food Pantry will open its new location on Thursday, May 29. The address for the new location is 700A W. 7th St. in Junction City.

Julia Loper, the President of the Board for the Geary County Food Pantry, noted that their project at the new location is not yet finished, but they will be opening their doors on Thursday. “There is still work being done to our facility, but we are open to serve our neighbors at our new location,” Loper said. Work on the project will continue to occur as the Food Pantry serves the community.

Hours at the new facility remain the same as they were at the previous location. Their hours are listed below.

Mondays and Thursdays – 10:30 a.m. - Noon

A formal grand opening and ribbon-cutting will be held during the late summer or early fall months. Hutton Construction was the main contractor for the project.

WABAUNSEE COUNTY—Law enforcement are investigating two teen suspect in connection with an alleged burglary.

On Monday night, a Sergeant with the Wabaunsee County Sheriff's Office investigated a suspicious gray 2018 Hyundia Tucson in Eskridge, according to a media release.

The vehicle had reportedly circled a structure on the 200 block of South Cedar without headlights on before parking. Two individuals dressed in black exited the vehicle and entered an abandoned property with bags and later loaded items from the building into the vehicle.

The Sheriff's Sergeant initiated a traffic stop as the vehicle attempted to depart the area and made contact with the driver, identified as 18-year-old Zane Arthur Burnett, and the passenger, identified as 19-year-old Eli Joseph Hoskins, both from Johnson County Kansas.

 A probable cause search of the vehicle revealed stolen items from the building including Masonic books, antique photos, and other objects in wet, dirt-covered bags. 

Both suspects were taken into custody without incident and transported to Wabaunsee County Jail and are being held on requested charges of burglary.

Teens accused of rural Kansas burglary

 Across the country, 13,135 people have been killed in a crash involving a teen driver from 2019-2023. More than 30% of those deaths occurred during the ‘100 Deadliest Days’ between Memorial Day and&nbsp;Labor Day, according to a AAA review of crash data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). On average, 8 people are killed per day in teen-involved driving crashes in the summer, compared to 7 per day during the rest of the year.&nbsp;

In 2023 alone, the most recent year of complete crash data, 2,897 people nationwide were killed in crashes involving a teen driver. A third of those deaths, 860, happened during the 100 Deadliest Days.&nbsp;

AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety analysis of NHTSA Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) data of deadly crashes involving drivers ages 15-18 in Kansas shows the tragic impact in the summer months:&nbsp;

“Summer months are particularly dangerous as more young drivers hit the road during school breaks with many logging more unsupervised driving time than usual,” said Jake Nelson, Director of Traffic Safety Advocacy and Research at AAA. “We encourage families to take advantage of AAA resources like our driver education classes and parent-teen safe driving agreements to help set clear expectations for driving privileges.”&nbsp;

OGDEN, KS – The Flint Hills Regional Council (FHRC) has been awarded a $1 million Brownfields Revolving Loan Fund (RLF) Grant by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). This federal investment will help communities across the region clean up and redevelop contaminated or underutilized properties, unlocking new economic and community development opportunities.

“This $1,000,000 EPA grant is a game changer for the Flint Hills region,” said Trish Giordano, President of the Flint Hills Regional Council. “It empowers us to transform abandoned properties into thriving community assets, sparking revitalization and creating new jobs. Together, we’re paving the way for a brighter, more prosperous future.”

The EPA’s Brownfields Program, established in 1995, supports local governments and nonprofits in cleaning and redeveloping sites affected by environmental contamination. Through this RLF clean up grant, FHRC will provide low-interest loans to eligible entities in the Flint Hills region, particularly in rural communities where financing for environmental remediation is often difficult to obtain.

According to Janna Williams, Regional Planner for FHRC, the loan fund will move projects forward by funding cleanup of brownfield sites—especially those found in rural downtowns. Once remediated, these sites can be redeveloped into businesses, housing, or public-use spaces, revitalizing communities, creating jobs, and strengthening the tax base.

It is anticipated that funding will become available early fall.&nbsp;

Just before 5:30a.m. Saturday, an officer filed a report for battery of a corrections officer, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

 A 31-year-old prisoner identified as Evans Agyemang of Manhattan was listed as a suspect for battering a 25-year-old woman during the performance of her duties. 

Just before 6:30a.m. Agyemang was arrested&nbsp; at 1001 S. Seth Child, for battery of a corrections officer. Agyemang was issued a total bond of $15,000 and remains in custody at Riley County Jail.
