NEWFOUNDLAND, CANADA—A Kansas man on a hunting trip in Canada died in a motel fire.
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police West District General Investigation Section confirmed the presence of human remains at the scene of a fire on October 19, at the Driftwood Motel in Deer Lake, according to a media release.
Also on October 19, police received a report of a missing man identified as 77-year-old Eugene Earl 'Gene' Spoon of Winfield, Kansas, who was a guest of the Driftwood Motel. The man was unaccounted for and had not been seen since the time of the fire.
On Wednesday, during a search of the fire scene, human remains were located and identified as those of Spoon. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner is involved in the investigation. The fire scene is being held and processed by police as part of an ongoing investigation.
According to an online obituary, Eugene Earl “Gene” Spoon of Winfield, Kansas, was found following a fire at the Driftwood Inn, Wednesday, October 23, 2024, while on a dream moose hunt trip in Deer Lake, NewFoundland, Canada.
Services are pending with Miles Funeral Service in Winfield and will be announced at a later date.
