8 residents displaced after 2-alarm Kan. apartment building fire

JOHNSON COUNTY—Eight families were displaced after a weekend fire in Overland Park.

Just after 8:30p.m. Saturday, crews were dispatched to the Colonial Gardens Apartments at 87th and Broadmoor, according to a media release.

First units found heavy smoke and fire showing from the building, prompting crews to immediately call a second alarm and bring reinforcements to help control the blaze.

Firefighters attacked the fire in the attic while additional crews searched the building to ensure all residents were evacuated safely. One cat was rescued and returned to its owner.

The fire was knocked down in approximately 20 minutes, with crews spending about an hour putting out hot spots before declaring the blaze under control. There were no injuries reported.

Apartment management and the American Red Cross are assisting the displaced residents. The cause  of the fire remains under investigation.

The Consolidated Fire District #2, Lenexa Fire, Shawnee Fire, Johnson County Med-ACT, and Overland Park Police assisted at the scene.
