JOHNSON COUNTY —The 13-year-old boy involved in the motorized scooter crash on Monday while on his way to school was released from a local hospital and is recovering at home, according to Leawood Police.
Just after 7:30a.m. the boy was traveling westbound on the sidewalk on his way to school, according to a media release from Leawood Polixe. As he crossed the entrance to the Prairie Star Middle School, he was struck by an eastbound vehicle turning left into the parking lot.
Fortunately, the boy was wearing a helmet and was alert and talking when the first officer arrived. Leawood Fire and Johnson County MedAct provided initial care before he was transported to a local hospital for further treatment.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
With schools back in session, we urge motorists, pedestrians, and students to use extra caution in and around school zones. Please slow down, stay alert, follow traffic laws, and watch for pedestrians. Parents are also encouraged to talk with their children about school-zone safety.
