Man serving time for armed robbery dies while in custody in Kansas

LEAVENWORTH COUNTY—The death of an inmate at the Federal Correctional Institution in Leavenworth is under investigation.

Just after 9:30a.m. Tuesday, 33-year-old Terrace Shaw was found unresponsive at the prison, according to the Federal Bureau of Prisons.

Responding employees initiated life-saving measures. Emergency medical services (EMS) were requested while life-saving efforts continued. EMS transported Shaw to a local hospital and subsequently pronounced deceased by hospital personnel.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation was notified.

No employees or other incarcerated individuals were injured and at no time was the public in danger.  Shaw was sentenced in the Middle District of Tennessee to an aggregate 168-month sentence for Conspiracy to Commit Hobbs Act Robbery, Hobbs Act Robbery, and Brandishing a Firearm During and in Relation to a Crime of Violence. He had been in custody at FCI Leavenworth since July 11, 2024. FCI Leavenworth is a medium security facility.
