After locking up the #1 ranking in Class 4A the Wamego girl’s basketball team will open sub-state play on Wednesday when they host Iola.

The Lady Raiders come into this contest as the 1-seed at 19-1 while the Lady Mustangs enter at 6-14.

“The girls have worked extremely hard all year to secure the 1-seed in the East,” Wamego head coach Brian McIntosh said. “Our team loves playing in front of our loyal supporters and the Wamego fanbase has been incredible all year. It’s a truly special atmosphere and it gives the girls so much energy during our home games.”

Despite entering this 1-16 matchup as heavy favorites, the Raiders are still affording a lot of respect to their round-one opponent ahead of Wednesday’s tip.

“Iola is better than their 6-14 record,” McIntosh said. “They play extremely hard and have some solid players that we will need to be assignment sound on. Our girls will need to continue to play the way they have all season attacking on both ends of the floor.”

The winner of this game will advance to the sub-state championship to take on either the 8-seed in Bishop Miege (11-9) or the 9-seed in Ottawa (11-9).

Tip-off between the Lady Raiders and Mustangs is set for 6:00 at Wamego High School.
