Name: Jeffrey Hancock
Age: 48
Profession: Business Owner/Engineer
Incumbent: Yes
Do you have children or grandchildren who attend(ed) USD 378 Riley County schools? Yes
-Why are you running for school board? I am seeking reelection because I feel like I still have the energy, passion, and policy making skills to keep the district working towards its mission of “All Our Children Learning”.
-Parental engagement and community involvement are crucial for the success of any school district. What strategies would you implement to increase collaboration between parents, citizens, and educators? During my incumbent tenure the BOE formed a public outreach committee. This committee seeks to encourage and increase engagement by parents, teachers and students within the district. Several surveys have been conducted and through these surveys the district continues to increase collaboration. I hope this continues.
-If you had one thing you could change about the USD 378 school district, what would it be? More variety in class offerings. It’s just not easy to do in a 3A District.
-What is your opinion of the USD 378 administration? Do you think you could work with the current administration moving forward? We are very lucky we have the quality of administrators we do. I can and have worked with the administration to create policy for the district for the betterment of the district.
-What is your opinion of the current school board? Our current board is very good. There are diverse backgrounds and experiences, which makes the board more effective in my opinion. However, there is always room for improvement. The bottom line is the current board is dedicated to creating policies that work towards the district goal of “All Our Children Learning.” We don’t get it right every time, but it’s not for a lack of commitment to the betterment of the district.
-Do you think you could compromise with the incumbents who will remain on the board? I feel I can find a way to work effectively with incumbents and newly elected members without any problems.
-What do you think the board’s role should be in the day-to-day operations of the district? The board should not have a role in the day-to-day operations. The purpose of the board is to create policy. Administration is ultimately responsible for the day-to-day operations. The board and the policy it creates is the framework from which Administration works.
-Have you received money or in-kind donations from individuals, businesses, groups or PACs outside of the school district? I have not.
