PAYNE COUNTY, Okla. — A Newton High School student was killed in an accident in Oklahoma on Interstate 35 early Thursday morning. The district sent out the following statement to parents on Thursday.
".NHS families - Newton High School has experienced the loss of one of our own students due to a car accident. With the information coming out, we understand that some of our students are experiencing pain and grief. We want to be supportive of those students, while also understanding that we are coming into a three day weekend. Please find an attached document on what to look out for concerning behaviors. Reach out to the school if you need further help or assistance. Thank you."
An Oklahoma Highway Patrol collision report states that a 2022 Kia Soul crashed shortly after 6:20 a.m. Thursday on northbound I-35 at mile marker 177 near Orlando. A 17-year-old passenger was pronounced dead at the scene, and three other people were taken to area hospitals.
Two of the victims were flown to OU Health in Oklahoma City, where they were admitted in critical condition. A 13-year-old boy was taken to Stillwater Medical Center, where he was treated and released.
