MANHATTAN – K-State sophomore guard Serena Sundell strung together one of her strongest two-game efforts in her young career last week and for her performance was named Big 12 Player of the Week for the first time in her career.
Last week, Sundell led the Big 12 with 22.5 points per game on 73.9 percent shooting, 90.9 percent from the foul line and added a diverse line of 5.5 assists, 4.5 rebounds, 3.5 steals and 1.5 blocks in 37 minutes per game. Her field goal percentage and assists per game were the second-highest in the league last week. She also ranked fourth in steals per game, fifth in free throw percentage and eighth in blocks per game.
Against Kansas on Wednesday, Sundell tallied 24 points on 8-of-10 shooting and 8-of-9 from the foul line. She also added seven assists, five rebounds, four steals and a block.
According to HerHoopStats.com, Sundell is the only player in the nation this season and just the fourth since 2009-10 to record a game with 24 or more points, on 80 percent shooting, seven or more assists, five or more rebounds, four or more steals and at least one blocked shot.
At West Virginia on Saturday, Sundell led a furious K-State rally from a 19-point first half deficit to tie the game in the fourth quarter. Sundell carded a game-high 21 points on 9-of-13 shooting, four assists, four rebounds, three steals and two blocked shots.
Over the last nine games, Sundell is averaging 17.0 points, 5.0 assists, 3.9 rebounds and 3.0 steals.
For the season, Sundell is averaging a career-high 13.2 points on a career-best 47.4 percent effort from the field. She is also carding 5.1 assists per game, 4.8 rebounds per game, 1.7 steals and 0.8 blocks. She ranks fourth in the league for assists, eighth in free throw percentage (.811) and 12th in scoring.
Sundell is the second Wildcat to collect Big 12 Player of the Week honors this season, joining Gabby Gregory on Nov. 14.
