On Thursday it was officially announced that 11 Kansas High Schools would unite in a merger between the "Big 7" and "Mid-East" leagues culminating in the formation of the new "Big East League".
These schools include Hiawatha, Holton, Jefferson West, Nemaha Central, Perry-Lecompton, Riley County, Rossville, Royal Valley, Sabetha, Silver Lake, and St. Mary's.
This will lead to the dissolving of both the Mid-East league, formed in 1948, and the Big 7, formed in 1926.
Non "Big-East" schools affected include Rock Creek, who will join the NCKL, Wabaunsee, who will join the Flint Hills League and Riverside, who will join the Northeast Kansas League next year.
According to a statement issued by the league this new setup will "improve scheduling logistics, increase academic and extracurricular activities, and further elevate these historically successful member schools."
