Kansas child sex offender dies after 10 months in prison

LANSING, KAN. – Lansing Correctional Facility (LCF) resident Michael Aineta died Wednesday after being transported to the KU Medical Center where hospital staff pronounced him dead, according to a media release from the Kansas Department of Corrections.

Aineta, 40, was serving a 190-month sentence for one count of rape and one count of criminal sodomy convictions involving a victim under the age of 14 in Seward County.

He had been listed as a registered sex offender since December of 2022.  He was originally assigned to the El Dorado Correctional Facility in December and transferred to Lansing in February, according to the Kansas Department of Corrections.

The cause of death is pending the results of an independent autopsy.

Per protocol, when a resident dies in the custody of the KDOC, the death is under investigation by the KDOC and the Kansas Bureau of Investigation.
