Kansas teen accused in targeted killing at apartment complex

SEDGWICK COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating another homicide in Wichita and have made an arrest.

Just after 9:30p.m. Tuesday Sedgwick County 911 received multiple reports of shots fired at an apartment complex in the 2600 block of South Emporia, prompting a response from law enforcement, according to Police Lt. Aaron Moses.

First responders found 19-year-old Dontis Carter, of Wichita, with multiple gunshot wounds. Despite immediate medical attention from officers and Sedgwick County EMS he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Law enforcement investigators identified a 19-year old resident of Wichita identified according to the daily booking report as Damarqua Keyleon Kendell Edwards as the suspect. He was apprehended after a traffic stop was conducted near his residence.

Preliminary information suggests that it was a targeted incident, Edwards and Carter were acquainted and engaged in a dispute at the time of the shooting.

Edwards is being held in the Sedgwick County Jail on requested charges of First-Degree Murder and Possession of Marijuana. Additionally, he face a requested charge of Aggravated Robbery related to a separate incident that occurred on December 20, 2023, at a business in the 1900 block of E. Pawnee.

The details of these cases will be presented to the Sedgwick County District Attorney for formal charging consideration. This is the 13 th Criminal Homicide of 2024.
