Geary County rural firefighters with assistance from Riley County Rural Fire responded to a grass fire adjacent to I-70, mile post 311 in the eastern part of the county near the Moritz Road exit about 3:15 p.m. Monday.

There were no injuries, but Garry Berges, Geary County Rural Fire Chief, estimated that  about 40 acres of grassland burned but no structures were in danger.  "A vehicle eastbound on I-70, something happened to the right front tire. which sent some hot rubber parts into the dry grass, started the grass on fire." Berges noted that the wind speed at the time was about 20-25 miles per hour out of the north and that caused the fire to rapidly spread through surrounding grass.

The grassland that burned was a combination of privately owned property and KDOT  right of way.
