HARVEY COUNTY —One person was taken into custody after trying to flee law enforcement on a motorcycle Tuesday night, according to a media release from Harvey County.
Just before 10:30p.m., a Harvey County Sheriff’s deputy attempted to stop the motorcycle as it traveled on Interstate 135 just south of the SE 36th Street exit south of Newton. The motorcycle did not have a license plate displayed.
The driver of the motorcycle, later identified as 35-year-old Joseph Irwin of Mulvane refused to stop, causing law enforcement to initiate a pursuit through the southern parts of Newton. The pursuit lasted about five minutes, ending with the motorcyclist losing traction and stopping near the parking lot of the Sand Creek Station Golf Course.
Deputies took Irwin into custody on requested charges of felony flee and elude, as well as other traffic misdemeanors. He is being held in the Harvey County Detention Center.
No one was injured in the incident. There was no significant damage to golf course property.
The Newton Police Department assisted with the pursuit.
