KANSAS CITY —Law enforcement investigating a fatal shooting at a homeless camp in Kansas City have identified the victim as 29-year-old Terrance Sherrils, according to KCPD Captain Jake Becchina.
Just after 6a.m. Monday, police responded to a shooting behind a business in the 9800 block of E. US 40 Highway.
First responders were led into the wooded area behind the business to what appears to be a homeless campsite. There they located Sherrils unresponsive outside a tent and he appeared to have been shot. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Based on information provided by numerous people on scene when officers arrived they took man into custody for more investigation.
That person remains in custody at this time.
Preliminary investigation indicates the suspect and Sherrils had an interaction at that location that escalated to an altercation which eventually led to shots being fired and the Sherrils being struck.
Detectives and Crime Scene Investigators processed the scene for evidence and spoke to the people that were at the location when police arrived. Detectives are not searching for any additional suspects at this time. Police have not released the name of the suspect.
