FINNEY COUNTY—A family pet died in a house fire in southwest Kansas over the weekend.
Just before 4:30 a.m. July 13, crews responded to a house fire at 2706 Belmont Place in Garden City, according to a media release.
All members of the family were reported to have evacuated but were unsure of the location of their two dogs.
First responders observed the single-family residence with heavy smoke and fire showing on the back side of the structure. Fire personnel from Engine 1 and Engine 2 began fire attack at the rear of the structure.
Personnel from Tower 1 completed primary and secondary search operations and successfully removed one dog to safety. Despite rescue efforts, the second dog was found dead. An Animal Control Officer (ACO) was requested to assist with the animal.
The fire was called under control at approximately 5:05 a.m. Fire Marshal Gene Robertson determined the cause of the fire to be accidental. Authorities did not release a damage estimate.
