Kansas inmate with 10 convictions has died

LANSING, Kansas. –Lansing Correctional Facility (LCF) resident Kaydin Varland-Hazelton, 28, died Saturday, according to a media release from the Kansas Department of Corrections.

He was pronounced deceased by local hospital staff.

Varland-Hazelton, was serving an 84-month sentence for several convictions of drug possessions and one count of battery in Sedgwick County.  According to the Kansas Department of Corrections, he had ten previous convictions dating back to crimes committed in 2018 including domestic battery, criminal threat, aggravated battery and criminal possession of a weapon by a felon.

The cause of death is pending the results of an independent autopsy. A preliminary assessment indicates the death was not related to COVID-19.

Per protocol, when a resident dies in the custody of the KDOC, the death is under investigation by the KDOC and the Kansas Bureau of Investigation.
