Suspect shot during Kan. traffic stop moved from hospital to jail

TOPEKA, Kan. – Law enforcement authorities are investigating a weekend officer involved shooting in Topeka and have a suspect in jail, according to Police Chief Bill Cochran.

Just 1:30 p.m. Sunday an officer from the Topeka Police Department was in the area of SW 12th St. and SW Buchanan St. conducting a traffic stop.

The officer was then dragged by the suspect’s vehicle for an unknown distance. While the officer was being dragged, the officer fired their department issued firearm at least one time, striking the suspect who was later identified as 19-year-old Dujontez Jaimandre Jerome Owens.

Owens fled and later crashed his vehicle in the area of 1208 SW Throop Street.  He was taken into custody and officers began to render aid until paramedics arrived. Owens was then taken to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The officer sustained injuries in the incident. Paramedics at the scene rendered aid to him. Authorities have not released his name.

On Wednesday, Owens was released from the hospital, arrested and booked into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections on requested charges of Aggravated Assault LEO Aggravated Battery LEO and Fleeing/Eluding.
