Police catch Kan. rape suspect after he jumps out window

SEDGWICK COUNTY — Law enforcement authorities are investigating a sexual assault and have made an arrest.

Just after 5 a.m. Wednesday, police responded to a call for police at a home in the 3000 block of North Porter in Wichita, according to officer Charley Davidson.

Upon arrival, officers heard a disturbance inside the home and, through a window observed a suspect later identified as Horace Gwyn, 54,  holding his girlfriend hostage with a knife to her throat, threatening to harm her if police entered.

Officers were able to establish communication with Gwyn through a window and communicate with him in an effort to de-escalate the situation. At that point, the girlfriend screamed.  The officers thought she was being injured, feared for her life, and forced entry into the home.

Gwyn released his girlfriend and jumped out of a window in an attempt to flee, but was arrested after being tased by an officer on the scene.  Gwyn was not injured. The woman was contacted inside of the house and had sustained minor cuts to her neck and chest from the knife. 

Gwyn is being held on a $50,000 bond on requested charges of rape, aggravated burglary, two counts of aggravated sodomy, aggravated kidnapping, two counts of aggravated battery, battery of a law enforcement officer, and resist arrest.

 Gwyn has previously been arrested and convicted of charges that include Aggravated battery and battery, according to Davidson.
