K9, drone used to arrest 14-year-old Kan. robbery suspect

SEDGWICK COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a robbery and have arrested a 14-year-old boy.

Just before 1a.m. Tuesday, officers responded to a carjacking in the area of 8600 E. Cherry Creek in Wichita, according to officer Charley Davidson.

  Upon arrival, officers contacted a 19-year-old man and an 18-year-old woman.  They reported that while sitting inside a blue 2012 Jeep Wranger when they were approached by the 14-year-old and three other unknown suspects. 

The suspects demanded the victim’s phones, and the 18-year-old woman ran from the vehicle.  The suspects pulled the 19-year-old from the vehicle, began punching him, and forcibly took his iPhone and Apple watch.  One of the suspects also said he had a gun. However, no gun was seen, according to Davidson.

The suspects then got into the Jeep and fled the scene.  No one was seriously injured, according to Davidson. 

A police officer observed the Jeep and suspects fleeing from the vehicle in the 1900 block of south Longford.  Officers began searching the area, and a Sedgwick County drone unit and WPD K9 responded to assist as well.

Police found the 14-year-old hiding in the area and arrested him without further incident and booked into the Juvenile Detention Facility.
