SHAWNEE COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities including the FBI are investigating several false active shooter calls to schools in Kansas, Missouri and across the country on Thursday.
Just after 1:30p.m. Thursday, police received a single call of an active shooter at Hayden High School, 401 SW Gage Blvd. in Topeka, according to a statement from the city spokesperson Gretchen Spiker.
Sedgwick County dispatch in Wichita reported a similar false call of an active shooter at North High School 1437 N Rochester Street in Wichita.
On Thursday morning, North Kansas City High School, 620 E 23rd Ave, North Kansas City, Missouri, was locked down after a reported active shooter call. Turner High School in Kansas City, Kansas had an increased police presence Thursday due to a reported school threat, according to USD 202.
The Topeka Police Department and local law enforcement in Wichita responded to the separate reports. No threats to the students, staff, or school were discovered at the schools.
The FBI said in a statement they are aware of the numerous swatting incidents wherein a report of an active shooter at a school is made. "The FBI takes swatting very seriously because it puts innocent people at risk. While we have no information to indicate a specific and credible threat, we will continue to work with our local, state, and federal law enforcement partners to gather, share, and act upon threat information as it comes to our attention. We urge the public to remain vigilant, and report any and all suspicious activity and/or individuals to law enforcement immediately.”
