Update: Hospital treated 26 for injuries after Kan. school bus crash

LYON COUNTY — Authorities continue their investigation of Wednesday's school bus crash in Lyon County.

At 9:41 a.m., Lyon County Emergency Communications received a call from Kansas Turnpike Authority about the accident which was approximately 15 miles southwest of the Emporia Toll Gate, according to Lyon County Sheriff's Sergeant Jacob Welsh.

Deputies arrived around 9:59 am and EMS personnel were on scene by 10:05 a.m.

Those who were injured were taken to Newman Regional Health, who was notified and ready to treat when patients arrived. Those who were not injured were taken to Emporia High School, who had gathered a response team of school officials, school counselors, nurses and Crosswinds Counseling and Wellness staff to assist those involved in the crash. They prepared clean clothing and food for everyone when they arrived as well as activities and support.

More patients were identified at Emporia High School and then Emporia Fire Department transported those patients to Newman Regional Health for further evaluation and treatment. In total, Newman Regional Health treated 26 patients for injuries.
