KANSAS CITY—A Kansas City is facing charges in connection with a fatal shooting that occurred in 2023. The victim died a week after the shooting.
Derrick L. Swain, 24, is charged with 2nd Degree Felony Murder, two counts of Armed Criminal Action, and Unlawful Use of a Weapon, according to Jackson County Prosecutor Melesa Johnson.
According to court records, Kansas City police responded to the area of 12th Street and Denver Avenue on May 7, 2023, on a reported shooting and located the victim suffering from apparent trauma. The victim was placed on life support and then succumbed to his injuries on May 14, 2023.
Surveillance footage captured the defendant driving a vehicle with two other occupants and then making a U-turn onto 12th Street. The rear passengers in the vehicle fired in the direction of the victims, striking one. The vehicle then fled. Using license plate readers, detectives learned the vehicle was reportedly stolen on May 6, 2023, and was recovered on May 8, 2023.
The two other individuals in the vehicle were juveniles at the time of the incident.
A Jackson County judge set Swain's bond at $150,000 cash only.
