SEDGWICK COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a series of reported shots fired that have been attributed to a vehicle with a rapidly backfiring exhaust.

On Sunday, police responded to approximately 17 calls of drive-by shooting or shots being fired after responding to a dozen calls April 11 during the same general time period and general area, according to officer Charley Davidson.

In each instance, police did not locate any physical evidence, damage, or injures from shots being fired. The calls caused a lot of fear throughout the community.

Just after 4 a.m. Monday a police officer conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle on the access road in the 5300 block of East Kellogg in Wichita.

While on the stop, a charcoal-colored mustang traveling eastbound on Kellogg drove by the officer and accelerated, causing the exhaust to rapidly backfire, sounding like gunfire. The officer attempted to catch up to the mustang but was unable to do so because of its extreme speed.

If you have any information on the whereabouts of this vehicle or the identity of the driver, please call 911 or Crime Stoppers at 316-267-2111
