KANSAS CITY —A Kansas City man is going to prison for his role in a 2023 homicide, kidnapping, and assault.

Under an Alford plea agreement, Jean D. Felix, 44, Kansas City was convicted of 2nd Degree Murder, 1st Degree Kidnapping, and 1st Degree Assault. He was sentenced to 30 years for murder 10 years each for kidnapping and assault, with the sentences to run concurrently, according to the Jackson County Prosecutor's office.

“This case is a painful reminder that intimate partner violence too often ends in tragedy, and the warning signs need to be taken seriously long before a life is lost,” Prosecutor Johnson said. “I am grateful to our team and the Kansas City Police Department for their commitment to securing justice for the victim and her family. We will continue standing with survivors, honor those we’ve lost, and hold abusers accountable.”

According to court records, Kansas City police were dispatched to an apartment on October 17, 2023, on a reported shooting. Officers located a surviving male victim with apparent gunshot trauma and learned a female had been kidnapped from the scene.

Shortly thereafter, KCPD was called to the scene of a located body, and detectives identified the kidnapped victim in the front yard of a different residence with multiple gunshot wounds. She was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Surveillance video captured Felix hanging on the victim’s apartment windows. When a male stepped outside to ask Felix to leave, he shot the male and pushed into the building, grabbing the female victim, and forced her down the street and into a vehicle, which he climbed into after her.

Ring camera footage captured the same vehicle minutes after leaving the apartment complex at the location where the body of the deceased victim was abandoned.

Detectives later located the vehicle, which had a shattered rear windshield, three spent shell casings, and blood inside, including a mixture of DNA belonging to Felix and the deceased. Felix was identified by witnesses at the scene of the crime.
