Prison for deadly Labor Day weekend robbery, killing in Kansas

SEDGWICK COUNTY — A Kansas man who admitted to a robbery, killing on Labor Day weekend in 2025 is going to prison.

On Friday Judge Jeffrey Goering sentenced 21- year-old Lafayette J. Washington, 21, Wichita to 237 months in prison for the death of 23-year-old year-old D’Andre Rubio of Wichita, according to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's office.

In June, Washington pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter and criminal possession of a weapon by a convicted felon.

In September, Washington was charged with First degree murder, theft of property and criminal possession of a firearm in the shooting death.

The shooting occurred  just after 1:30 a.m. September 1, in the 100 block of Rock Island in Wichita. Officers arrived and found Rubio suffering from a gunshot wound. He was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced deceased. Detectives have learned that a disturbance took place before the shooting. 

Washington has been held on a bond of over $1 million dollars since his arrest, according to online jail records.
