KANSAS CITY —Law enforcement investigating the fatal hit-and-run of a pedestrian in a Kansas City suburb have a suspect in custody.

Just after 7a.m. Monday, a semi driver on Interstate 35 reported seeing someone lying on the adjacent Edgar Petty Road, just north of NE 116th Street, according to a statement from the Clay County, Missouri Sheriff.

Deputies arrived four minutes later and found a deceased man on the road. It appeared an unknown vehicle struck him and left the area.

Deputies shut Edgar Petty Road down for several hours so investigators could gather evidence. The Platte County Sheriff’s Office assisted with surveying the crash scene.

Detectives are working to identify the victim.

Based on evidence recovered at the scene, deputies believed the suspect vehicle is a 2013-18 Ford Focus and likely has fresh damage.

The sheriff's office has not released the name of the suspect or possible charges.
