
SALINE COUNTY— Law enforcement authorities are investigating two suspects from Indiana after a wild chase in Saline County.
Just before 3a.m. Friday, a deputy sheriff noticed a 2020 Dodge Charger with no tag in the 500 block of N. 9th Street in Salina and attempted to make a traffic stop, according Sheriff Roger Soldan.
The driver later identified as Destinee Milton-Mata, 23, Gary, Indiana., in the Dodge ignored the deputy, traveled north on 9th Street and entered Interstate 70 at speeds of 100 mph.
The chase continued traveling in both directions on Interstate 70, Interstate 135, Crawford Street, State Street and on Halstead Road where the driver turned around and traveled eastbound in the westbound lanes toward deputies who swerved to avoid a crash.
After returning to northbound Interstate 135, the Dodge traveled over a spike strip left by Salina Police. However, the pull rope on the strip broke and the officer was unable to retrieve the spikes before two sheriff's vehicles and a motorist's vehicle drove over them, causing multiple tire punctures, according to Soldan No one was injured, he added.
The chase continued north onto U.S. 81 when the Dodge exited to Kansas 143 Highway and turned west on to a gravel road where it crashed, according to Soldan.
Milton-Mata and a passenger identified as 23-year-old Stefano Childress, 31, Hammond Indiana, fled on foot. Deputies located them hiding in a field. Deputies learned the car was reported stolen in Illinois.
Childress, who has a prior felony conviction in Indiana is being held on requested charges of Obstruction and Possession of stolen property, according to Soldan.
