The Salina Liberty’s title defense got off to an excellent start on Saturday as the reigning CIF champs defeated the Topeka Tropics in a 75-45 shootout.
Salina found themselves down 21-15 at the end of the first quarter, but doubled up the Tropics in the second and never looked back, outscoring Topeka 60-24 the rest of the way.
It was a great debut under center for rookie QB Jerod Evans, who completed 13/18 for 155 yards, four touchdowns, and zero picks, adding a rushing touchdown for good measure.
The entire Liberty offense was clicking and everyone got in on the fun, with season-opener touchdowns for Tracy Brooks, D-Wash, Ed Smith, Anthony Love, and newcomer De’Andra Sipp.
Even among an offensive unit loaded with stars, Fast Ed Smith had himself a day, hauling in four passes for 65 yards and three touchdowns on the day.
Defensively, Salina forced two turnovers with Adrian Johnson recovering a loose fumble and Deetray Matthews collecting a pick in the Liberty’s no fly zone.
After opening their season in front of the Salina faithful, the Liberty will hit the road for their next three games, starting with a trip to Sioux City to battle the Bandits on March 11th.
