KCPD reports progress on work to ID suspect in weekend killing

 KANSAS CITY—Law enforcement are investigating a weekend homicide in Kansas City and after asking the public for help to identify a suspect seen on security cameras reported late Tuesday detectives have made progress in the case.

Police thanked the public for help in the work to identify the suspect and will be presenting investigative findings to prosecutors for consideration of applicable charges.

Just after 4:30a.m. July 19, police responded on a shots fired call at 54th and Prospect, according to Sheriff Daryl Forte'.

First responders located a man identified as 45-year-old Ernest J. Scott suffering from gunshot wounds in a grassy area. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police interviewed witnesses and found surveillance video in an effort to identify the suspect.

This is 80th homicide of 2024 in Kansas City, Missouri, according to KCPD.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the TIPS Hotline anonymously at 816-474-TIPS. There is a reward of up to $25,000 for information submitted anonymously that leads to an arrest in the case.
