A look ahead at area HS football games Friday

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Kansas State forward Seryee Lewis will miss the upcoming basketball season after having surgery last week to repair a torn ACL that he sustained in preseason workouts. TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - Salvador Perez hits a three-run homerun in the bottom of the first inning against the Indians to tie the Royals single season home run record at 48.

The catcher for the Royals now ties Jorge Soler for the team’s record.

Bringing in the three runs jumps him to 3rd place all time in RBI’s in a single season as well at 121.

Whit Merrifield doubled to get on base for Perez and made history himself. He’s now the 7th player in AL/NL history to have multiple seasons of 40 doubles and 40 stolen bases. He joins the likes of Brian Roberts, Hanley Ramirez, Alfonso Soriano, George Sisler, Tris Speaker, and Ty Cobb.

Salvador Perez ties Royals single-season HR record

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Oklahoma hasn't played a true road game in nearly two years thanks to the pandemic, which forced those schools that did allow fans last year to limit capacity, and four consecutive home games to start this season.

The sixth-ranked Sooners figure to be in for a rude welcome on Saturday.

Not only are they finally venturing out of Norman, they are playing their first Big 12 road game since they announced plans to bolt the conference along with Texas shortly before the season. The decision to head for the SEC was hardly appreciated by longtime cohorts such as Kansas State, who were left on shaky footing.

“We really tried to prepare for that all the way through spring,” Sooners coach Lincoln Riley said. “You can't knowing that just about half our roster — maybe close to half — hasn't played a full college road game. We've tried to prepare guys for it.”

Maybe it will help the Sooners (4-0, 1-0) focus knowing Kansas State (3-1, 0-1) will be on the opposite sideline.

For all their dominance of the Big 12 the past few years, the Sooners have struggled to deal with the Wildcats, who are trying to win their third straight in the series for the first time since the early 1990s. Kansas State dealt Riley's bunch their only regular-season loss in 2019 before turning the trick again in the second week of the season a year ago.

“Honestly, I've been looking forward more to away games than I have home games just because to have the crowd against you and stuff like that,” Oklahoma wide receiver Marvin Mims said. "That's a really neat opportunity. They're going to be in there roaring, especially since we're Oklahoma. We're going to get everybody's best when we go there.”

Maybe there's something to the name on the front of the jersey bringing out the best in Kansas State.

“I would say the kids probably know that we're playing somebody who's ranked but it's nothing that we would emphasize — that, ‘This would be a great win because it’s over a third-ranked or fourth-ranked team,,'” Wildcats coach Chris Klieman said.

“I'll be honest with you: Every win is a great win,” Klieman said. “It’s hard to win football games."

Especially when you have quarterback questions.

Sixth-year senior Skylar Thompson has been out with a knee injury sustained against Southern Illinois, and while he's been doing more in practice it appears he is still a couple weeks away from playing. That means sophomores Will Howard, who has been ineffective in Thompson's place, and Jaren Lewis figure to take the snaps against the Sooners.

“It's just about us and controlling what we can control,” Kansas State linebacker Ryan Henington said. " Like last year and the year before, when we go out and execute our game plan and stick to our keys and principles, I think we will be all right.”

Thompson was 12 of 18 for 240 yards in just over a game for Kansas State before getting hurt. Howard and Lewis have combined to go 31 of 61 for 403 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions in nearly three full games.

“We’re capable of doing it,” Klieman said of passing the ball effectively. “It’s just got to be more consistent.”

Oklahoma quarterback Spencer Rattler came into the season with Heisman Trophy aspirations, but the past couple of weeks have been underwhelming. He threw for just 214 yards against Nebraska before going for 256 with a touchdown and a pick against the Mountaineers. Rattler also was sacked four times in the game.

The Wildcats could get defensive back Reggie Stubblefield back from an injury that kept him out of last week's trip to Oklahoma State. Less likely to play due to injury are cornerback T.J. Smith and tight end Daniel Imatorbhebhe.

Oklahoma State stuffed Kansas State running back Deuce Vaughn last week, stacking the box and holding him to just 23 yards on 13 carries. Vaughn had been over 120 yards rushing each of the first three weeks of the season.

“Just a do-everything type of guy,” Oklahoma defensive coordinator Alex Grinch said. “Matchup nightmare.”

Vaughn will be going against an Oklahoma defense that allowed 75 yards to West Virginia on its opening drive last week and just 151 yards on the next 46 plays combined. That included 47 yards rushing and an average of 1.6 per carry.

“We challenged each other to hold them under 100 rushing yards and one touchdown,” Sooners defensive lineman Isaiah Thomas said. “Obviously we did and it was fun to be out there.”

OU - K-State will be first road game for the Sooners

MANHATTAN, Kan.&nbsp;– Fans can catch a first glimpse of the 2021-22 Kansas State men’s basketball team on Saturday morning, as the Wildcats will hold an open practice from 11 a.m., until 1:30 p.m., CT at Bramlage Coliseum prior to the Oklahoma football game.

Fans can enter the arena through the Northwest or Northeast entrances with the doors to Section 4-5-6 on the West side and Section 18-19-20 on the East side opening at 11 a.m., CT. Admission is free.

Fans will be able to pick up roster cards (limited supply) and schedule posters on the Bramlage concourse.

K-State, which opens team practice on Thursday, is set to return four of its top-5 scorers, including super senior&nbsp;Mike McGuirl&nbsp;and rising sophomores&nbsp;Davion Bradford,&nbsp;Selton Miguel&nbsp;and&nbsp;Nijel Pack. In all, the Wildcats return nine lettermen, including juniors&nbsp;Kaosi Ezeagu&nbsp;and&nbsp;Carlton Linguard, Jr., and sophomores&nbsp;Luke Kasubke&nbsp;and&nbsp;Seryee Lewis, while adding seven newcomers, including Division I transfers&nbsp;Mark Smith&nbsp;(Missouri),&nbsp;Markquis Nowell&nbsp;(Little Rock) and&nbsp;Ismael Massoud&nbsp;(Wake Forest).

The only senior in 2020-21, McGuirl averaged 11.8 points, 3.8 rebounds and 3.6 assists per game while starting all 29 games. He led the way in 12 team categories, while was second in scoring to Pack (12.7 ppg.), who became the first true freshman to pace the Wildcats in scoring since 2013-14. Bradford (7.7 ppg.) and Miguel (7.2 ppg.) were fourth and fifth in scoring, respectively, while Bradford recorded the second-highest single-season field goal percentage (62.1) in school history.

The three transfers have combined to play in 220 games at the Division I level with 138 starts, while they have accounted for nearly 400 3-pointers (383-of-1061; 36.1 percent) in their college careers. In addition, the team welcomes sophomore walk-ons&nbsp;Jordan Brooks&nbsp;and&nbsp;Trey Harris&nbsp;as well as a pair of true freshmen in&nbsp;Maximus Edwards&nbsp;and&nbsp;Logan Landers.&nbsp;

Season tickets are currently on sale with the Wildcats slated to play 18 games at Bramlage Coliseum, beginning with an exhibition game against Pittsburg State on Thursday, November 4. The official opener is set for Wednesday, November 10 against Florida A&amp;M.

KSU men’s basketball to hold open practice Saturday

MANHATTAN, Kan.&nbsp;–&nbsp;Kansas State senior wide receiver&nbsp;Landry Weber&nbsp;is one of 176 players from all NCAA Divisions and the NAIA – including 79 FBS players – to be named a semifinalist for the 2021 William V. Campbell Trophy, the National Football Foundation &amp; College Hall of Fame (NFF) announced Wednesday. The award recognizes an individual as the absolute best football scholar-athlete in the nation for his combined academic success, football performance and exemplary leadership.

Weber, a product of Lenexa, Kansas, is the eighth Wildcat to be named a semifinalist in as many years and joins his older brother,&nbsp;Stanton, who was a semifinalist in 2015. Other semifinalists include&nbsp;Tyler Lockett&nbsp;(2014),&nbsp;Will Davis&nbsp;(2016),&nbsp;Trent Tanking&nbsp;(2017),&nbsp;Dalton Risner&nbsp;(2018) and&nbsp;Adam Holtorf&nbsp;(2019). Lockett, Risner, Holtorf and&nbsp;Tysyn Hartman&nbsp;(2011) have all been named finalists for the award.

“These 176 impressive candidates truly represent the scholar-athlete ideal,” said NFF Chairman Archie Manning, whose sons Peyton and Eli were named NFF National Scholar-Athletes in 1997 and 2003, respectively. “For more than 60 years, the NFF National Scholar-Athlete Awards have honored more than 800 college football players who have been successful on the football field, in the classroom and as leaders in the community. Weber has played in 34 career games as a contributor on both offense and special teams, hauling in 10 passes for 158 yards while also making seven special teams tackles and recovering a fumble on a kickoff in 2018. A three-time First Team Academic All-Big 12 honoree, Weber has been nominated for the award twice with a perfect 4.0 GPA.

Local schools ranked in week 5 poll

MANHATTAN, Kan. - Kansas State Head Coach Chris Klieman and select players spoke to the media Tuesday ahead of the Wildcats' Big 12 matchup with Oklahoma this weekend.&nbsp;

Kansas State has beaten Oklahoma each of the last two times the foes have squared off, including a comeback victory last season when the Wildcats trailed 21-7 at halftime, but rallied in the 4th quarter to win 38-35 in Norman.&nbsp;

K-State running back Deuce Vaughn says there's nothing specific about the Oklahoma matchup that brings out the best in the 'Cats. "It's the fact that every single week we come out and we just prepare to go and play our best football game every Saturday," said Vaughn. "Things kind of get clicking at some point, and when we're all together as a unit, that's when we're a really, really good football team."

Oklahoma, who enters ranked #6 nationally in the AP Top 25 and #4 in the AFCA Coaches Poll, is coming off a 16-13 win over the West Virginia Mountaineers on Saturday, and although OU will enter at 4-0 on the season, they have yet to "win convincingly," against a quality opponent. To some, that may be a sign of weakness in the Sooners, but to the Wildcats who spoke to the media today, it's more of a testament to the quality of football within the Big 12 Conference.&nbsp;

"There's a whole bunch of good teams in the big 12 and we see that every single week," said Vaughn. "We see that with Baylor beating a really good Iowa State team... Just seeing all these great teams in the Big 12, and we think we have a really good team ourselves, so it's going to be a great time, a great year in the Big 12."

Kansas State will likely be without Quarterback Skylar Thompson Saturday, <a href="https://jcpost.com/posts/2d8bd9bd-d9de-4692-a2fc-021373063577">according to Head Coach Chris Klieman</a>. Thompson has played a massive role in each of K-State's last two wins over the Sooners, but the Wildcats will have to find a way to get the job done with either Will Howard or Jaren Lewis running the offense. Both of which saw significant work in Saturday's loss at Oklahoma State.&nbsp;

It's no secret that the Wildcats will play the role of underdog when Oklahoma visits on Saturday, and even more so without Thompson, but Chris Klieman emphasized that he and his staff won't approach the game any differently in that role.

"I think it's still all in your preparation. You know, I think so often we as coaches, or even as players, worry more about the opponent when we need to worry more about how we can be better ourselves," said Klieman. "Whether or not it's an opponent that you're an underdog, you're a favorite, you still gotta come ready to play every weekend. I think you're seeing that accross the landscape of college football, with teams that quote, 'are favored to win and don't win,' or are hanging on."

The Wildcats are currently 10.5-point underdogs to the Sooners on Saturday, according to Las Vegas. K-State will look for it's third-straight win over Oklahoma when the ball is kicked at 2:30p.m. inside Bill Snyder Family Stadium.

Chiefs spokesman Ted Crews said that Reid was “in great spirits” and that he planned to visit the practice facility later in the day or Tuesday. In the meantime, Chiefs coordinators Steve Spagnuolo and Eric Bieniemy ran the Monday film reviews. The 63-year-old Reid is expected to coach Sunday when the Chiefs visit Philadelphia.

“Coach is doing well, currently resting &amp; in stable condition,” the statement posted on Twitter said.

The 63-year-old Reid was feeling ill but coached the duration of the game, a team spokesman said.

Assistant coach Dave Toub answered questions following a second straight fourth-quarter letdown.

“Coach just wasn't feeling well,"&nbsp;<a href="https://www.chiefs.com/video/dave-toub-it-s-not-about-effort-we-ve-just-got-to-clean-it-up-week-3-press-confe">Toub said afterward</a>. "He did talk to the team.”

In fact, quarterback Patrick Mahomes said his coach “seemed fine on the sideline as well” as the Chiefs (1-2) threw away an opportunity to beat the Chargers with&nbsp;<a href="https://pro32.ap.org/article/chargers-rally-beat-turnover-prone-chiefs-30-24-kc">four turnovers, several costly penalties and numerous missed assignments</a>.

“He came in and talked to us and he seemed fine,” Mahomes said of the postgame locker room. “That's all I really know.”

The Chiefs began the game by turning over the ball on three straight possessions, including a pair of fumbles and a pass from Mahomes that bounced off his intended wide receiver and into the hands of the Chargers' Asante Samuel Jr.

It basically ended with Mahomes throwing another interception with 1:42 left in the fourth quarter.

The game was still tied at that point, but their suspect defense — which had allowed 12 straight red-zone trips to turn into touchdowns to start the season — seemed to make it a foregone conclusion that Los Angeles was headed for the end zone.

The Chiefs allowed a 15-yard pass to Keenan Allen on third down, then DeAndre Baker was called for pass interference on fourth a few minutes later to give Los Angeles a fresh set of down. Justin Herbert then hit Mike Williams with back-to-back passes, and the second with 32 seconds left in the game gave the Chargers the lead for good.

Asked what Reid said afterward, running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire replied: “Pretty much it's not going to be over-the-top as far as him getting on us. We know what we did wrong. We know what we need to get corrected.”

“He came and told us — it's not necessarily going to be all right, but it's things that we can get fixed that can make it all right. That's what we need to go in and handle tomorrow. KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Chargers capitalized on four Kansas City turnovers, including Patrick Mahomes' second interception in the closing minutes, and Justin Herbert's touchdown toss to Mike Williams with 32 seconds to go lifted Los Angeles to a 30-24 victory over the Chiefs on Sunday.

Herbert finished with 281 yards passing and four touchdowns without an interception, outdueling Mahomes in a matchup not only of two of the game's best young quarterbacks but two teams expected to compete for the AFC West title.

Instead, the Chargers (2-1) won for the third time in four trips to Kansas City to send the two-time defending conference champion Chiefs (1-2) to the division cellar.

Williams finished with seven catches for 122 yards and two TDs. Austin Ekeler and Keenan Allen also had TD grabs.

The Chiefs trailed 14-0 early but had climbed back into the game in the second half, taking a 24-21 lead midway through the fourth quarter. But the Chargers tied it on Tristan Vizcaino's short field goal, and after Mahomes was picked by Alohi Gilman with 1:42 to go, Herbert began the march for the go-ahead touchdown.

He converted a third-and-2 near midfield with a pass to Allen, then the Chargers were bailed out on a fourth-down incompletion by DeAndre Baker's pass interference. Herbert hit Williams for a 16-yard gain before finding his big wide receiver in the end zone for the second time in the game.

The Chiefs got to midfield in the closing seconds, but Mahomes' throw to the end zone was incomplete.

He finished with 260 yards passing and three touchdowns to go with his two interceptions, while Clyde Edwards-Helaire ran for 100 yards with a touchdown catch but was responsible for one of two Kansas City fumbles.

The Chargers' defensive game plan seemed simple: They refused to let Mahomes throw deep, forcing him into short check-downs, and made the Chiefs put together long drives while waiting for them to self-destruct.

On the Chiefs' opening possession, Mahomes bounced a pass off Marcus Kemp that landed in the hands of rookie Asante Samuel Jr. for his second interception in as many weeks. On their next drive, Demarcus Robinson coughed it up at nearly the same spot on the field. And on the Chiefs' offensive third try, Edwards-Helaire fumbled one week after his fumble in the closing minutes cost Kansas City a shot at a winning field goal in Baltimore.

That was the fifth turnover in six possessions dating to last Sunday night's loss.

The Chiefs must have pushed reset in the locker room. 

They used a 12-play, 75-yard drive to start the second half that ended with a short TD throw to Jody Fortson. A 10-play, 70-yard drive then ended with Edwards-Helaire catching a TD pass.

In addition to the two Wildcat inductees, the 12th Cotton Bowl Hall of Fame Class includes Notre Dame split end Tom Gatewood, Arkansas guard Jerry Jones, Ole Miss running back/wide receiver Dexter McCluster, Texas defensive end Cory Redding and Boston College linebacker Bill Romanowski. These six remarkable players and distinguished head coach join an elite group of honorees comprised of 78 men and women who have shaped the grand traditions of college football and the celebrated history of the Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic. Each Hall of Fame member will make brief remarks during the hour-long lunchtime event. The ceremony is free and open to the public. On the ground or through the air, he was relentless. He ran 14 yards for the game's first score, and then passed for touchdowns of 56 and 10 yards. By the time the third quarter rolled around, most of the snow had evaporated along with Tennessee's chances of winning. MANHATTAN, Kan.&nbsp;– Kansas State offensive coordinator&nbsp;Courtney Messingham&nbsp;and defensive coordinator&nbsp;Joe Klanderman&nbsp;met with members of the media on Thursday at the Vanier Family Football Complex prior to the Wildcats’ Big 12 opener at Oklahoma State . COURTNEY MESSINGHAM, OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR

On playing both quarterbacks against Oklahoma State...

“Yeah, I think so. I don't know when exactly, but I expect Jaren (Lewis) to play and Will (Howard) will start it, and we'll kind of go as it goes. I think it brings a good dynamic, and Jaren has done a nice job and has put himself in a position to keep getting some opportunities.”

On the play of quarterback Jaren Lewis against Nevada…

“I thought he did well. I thought he didn’t get rattled. He managed the situation well. We even went one time where we kind of went in an up-tempo mode on him and he handled it really, really well.”

On the progression of quarterback Skylar Thompson…

“I think he's doing great. I can't tell you that I think he's going to be ready tomorrow or two or three weeks from now, but his ability to move around and throw the football, I've been happy with.”

On if he expects Oklahoma State to use multiple fronts...

“Oh definitely, definitely, especially with the age. They have a defensive end that has played a bunch that really understands the game, so they will be in four-down personnel and line up in three-down looks. They'll put him in as a linebacker stood up. They'll slide him back out and play as a rush end even though he's in a two-point stance. So, we'll see multiple looks. We've got to do a great job handling that.”

On the offensive line responding after Josh Rivas went out for a few plays against Nevada...

“Josh, obviously, is a huge deal for us because he's been playing extremely well. I think I talked last week even about just probably he's played the best football of all of them, but we keep hammering those guys on. It's kind of the next guy up, and if you're called upon, you've got to make sure you go in and do your job and everybody's got to count on you. It was good to see us really do a good job on a number of series of finishing plays, finishing drives, moving the chains. Probably the best thing that we did was stay out of third and long even though we weren't totally where we didn't have any third longs. Compared to the first two weeks we were much more third and manageable.”

On the need to throw the football more...

“Oh, 100%. I told the wide outs right when the (Nevada) game got over, ‘We're not going to beat Oklahoma State, we're not going to beat Oklahoma, we're not going to win in the Big 12 throwing the ball 13 times.’ Now, we called more than 13, but because of the pressure that Nevada brought, the number of times they blitzed, we had a number of run checks against the blitzes. So, we didn't want to drop back or even run some nakeds against their pressure. We thought we could handle them. We could pick up the blitzes better in the run game – we felt like – than we could in the passing game. I anticipate we will throw the ball much more than we did last week.”

On Will Howard being able to make checks this year...

“Honestly, not saying he wasn’t able to do it last year because he could, but to the extent he was able to do it this past game, I’m not sure he missed one of their pressures. Meaning, I’m not sure he was caught off guard whether it was getting the protection the right way or saying, ‘Hey, wait a minute. We need to get out of this and run the football.’ Collin (Klein) could tell you the total number that he had, but he probably checked us 15 times in that game because of pressure.”

On Will Howard facing a hostile environment this weekend...

“It's interesting. You don't think about it, but because of last year, this is really the first time he's been in a hostile environment. Being on the road in the Big 12 – or really anywhere where you're going to have fans getting after you – whether you're down in the red zone, whether you're coming out, whether it's third down. Your ability to handle it and still communicate is a huge key, and I think he'll handle it well just because he's pretty mature for his age.”

“I really believe that he doesn't care whether it's in the run game or in the passing game. ‘If I get an opportunity, I'm going to try to make the biggest play.’ I think the thing that's helped him though is having Joe (Ervin) play as well as Joe has, has allowed Deuce to do two things. One, get a little bit of a break and get a mindset where, ‘I can see how the defense is playing from a different perspective.’ But then also just getting some rest. I hope that we continue to play – shoot – I hope we play at least three tailbacks each week and have legitimate carries by all three of them.”

“I think that as I talked a little bit last week. He just runs so much more violent straight downhill and slides off people more than really juking them or making them miss as much as he just slides off an edge and runs through arm tackles. He's got to keep doing that for us because it gives us a little bit of a different tempo when he's carrying it than when Deuce (Vaughn) is carrying it.”

Just because Joe is a legitimate run threat, and then, somebody has to go figure out where Deuce is at just because his abilities from his skill set allows you to be a receiver as well.”On Jacardia Wright’s role in the offense...“Needs to keep doing that. He probably weighs 20 more pounds than either Deuce (Vaughn) or Joe (Ervin). I thought two weeks ago he had a couple of good runs. I think that he’s going to keep coming along. I think the biggest thing is being that much more comfortable being in the stage that he’s in and us having that much more confidence that he’ll handle that stage. The more chances he’ll get the better he’ll do.”On confidence in Will Howard and Jaren Lewis throwing the football...“Oh, I’m confident. The reason I am is I believe our wide receivers trust those guys, and trust is the biggest part of having a really, really good passing game. It’s the quarterbacks and receivers on the same page – tight ends included, obviously – that they trust each other and are going to make plays for each other.”JOE KLANDERMAN, DEFENSIVE COORDINATOROn how difficult it is to prepare for Oklahoma State considering they’ve played a different style this year...“You took the words right out of my mouth. Yeah, it's been a really weird week. I think with all the injuries that they've had, they've had a tough time establishing the identity that they want to establish. Week one without Spencer Sanders, then receivers in and out, tailbacks in and out, it's been a challenge to try to corral. We're going to have to be very, very sharp within the game.”On the Oklahoma State running backs...“They got a stable of tailbacks. I tell you what, I'm very impressed with how those guys run, how they keep their feet moving, and how they run through contact. The vision that they have. Those guys are excellent, excellent players.”On the early success of K-State’s run defense...“The attitude that we're starting to develop with it is our guys are doing a good job of not allowing themselves to be blocked, of staying alive. We use the term, ‘changing the math.’ Sometimes, when you get things drawn up offensively, you can maybe get a hat on a hat. Sometimes it takes somebody with a superhuman effort to change the math, so to speak, on the grease board. We're doing that, by and large, with a lot of guys.”On replacing defensive end Khalid Duke...“Well, Khalid has been in so many roles for us. We've used him as a linebacker. We've used him as a defensive end. So, it's going to be replacement by committee. It's going to be Nate Matlack to a degree, Spencer Trussell to a degree when it comes to the defensive end stuff. That's going to be Ryan Henington, Wayne Jones when it comes to some of the linebacker stuff. They've been doing that, so I feel comfortable with all of those guys.”On the key to success with the 4-3 and the 3-4...“I think everything comes down to situational football. I think that's the bottom line. Everything we look at throughout the week is just situations, how we want to play those situations and what personnel gives us the best chance in all situations.”On the three-man front being effective against the run...“Well, at the end of the day, it's all a numbers game. At the end of the day, we're just trying to outnumber them at the point of attack with everything that we're doing – run game or pass game. Sometimes the presentation can look a little bit different in some of the three-down stuff and gives you a lot more flexibility to look different ways than the four-down stuff does when you have to kind of tilt your hand a little bit. That was the main idea behind it. It was designed for the RPO teams, and, the next thing you know, a guy raises up and throws an RPO glance into somebody that standing right there in the glance window. That scares some teams into making them a little bit more one dimensional and forcing them to run the football. Now we can tee off on that.”On the play of Reggie Stubblefield against Nevada...“Reggie has been awesome. Reggie had a dynamite week of preparation. We knew he was going to play a lot. We made the decision to use him as the SAM linebacker so that we can play a little bit more man and do some different things with him against a team that we thought was going to throw the ball a little bit more. He's very comfortable in the box. He's very good as a blitzer. The more he learns and the more he gets around here, he's going to be a bigger and bigger impact as the season goes on.”On the challenges Oklahoma State quarterback Spencer Sanders presents...“For years he's been a guy that's been giving guys like me headaches, just keeping plays alive, he’s got a good arm. He's been in this system, he understands what he's doing, and they're intelligent how they use them. I think that they're going to have to run him a little bit. We're gearing up for that as much as we can. Sometimes it's the non-designed runs that give you the most fits. The quarterback scrambles, the draws when they spread you out, those kinds of things that keep you up at night, because he's a difficult guy to get his hands on. He's a strong runner, and he can beat you in so many ways. Yeah, he's the deal.”On how many players he expects to see getting to the ball...“Eleven. Short answer, 11. Yeah, that's it. That's the mentality we're trying to get established.”On the defense taking pride in getting everyone to the ball...“Seriously, we emphasize throughout spring and throughout fall camp to try to get that mentality. I think guys take pride in that right now. When you look at some of the effort plays that we've made – I'll give you an example, the Jaylen Pickle interception a couple of weeks ago. That was one of the best plays I've ever seen for a lot of reasons. First of all, it's just the intelligence of Ryan Henington to get that ball up in the air and keep it alive, but Jaylen Pickle just being in the vicinity, a defensive tackle being out on the numbers to make that play. It doesn't happen when guys are standing around watching the game. That happens when guys are screaming the football, and that's what makes it really cool.”On Ryan Henington’s value...“He's been in the box. He's been out of the box. We use him sometimes differently on third down because he can flat run. He's smart enough and cares enough to learn a bunch of different spots. He can, athletically, do a lot of things. He's a guy that can play man coverage if we need to. He’s done that stuff before. Really, we used him and Reggie (Stubblefield) a little bit last week interchangeably. We weren't afraid to replace a man when he was out there, whether it was tight ends or receivers. So, his versatility makes us better.”On last week’s excessive celebration penalty...“I don't know, I think I was excessively celebrating at the same time, so I don't know if I saw it. We want our guys to have fun. We want our guys to set an NCAA record for fun playing football, but at the same time, we've got to be intelligent in how we're doing it. This isn’t the National Football League. We can't run over there and carry on. So, from now on, we're going to have that same amount of fun, but we're going to do it on our sideline where it's safe.”On the fine line between having fun and excessive celebration...“At the end of the day, when guys are celebrating together, I think it's a great thing. I think when guys are individually making a spectacle of themselves, I don't know if that's what college football is about.”On the performance of cornerback Tee Denson...“Tee’s been awesome. He's been getting better and better. As he gets more and more confidence, he's going to play a lot more. His technique has been good, his physicality is so much improved. His understanding has always been very good. He's a super intelligent football player. I'm glad we've got him for a long time to come here.”On his views on the transfer portal...“I got a couple of different opinions on that. Obviously, it's been good for us, and I think the reason that it's been good for us is because Coach Klieman is such a good judge of character. There’s good and bad to that. I'm sure there's some people that had some transfers that they picked up that are just now rearing their ugly heads, maybe their true identity. I think the true identity of our guys is they're superb people, and they make us a lot better in the locker room and on the field.”On Oklahoma State wide receiver Brennan Presley...“They're going to use him all over the place. He's a guy that's going to get a number of touches. He's a difficult guy to get your hands on in man. He's got speed to get over the top of you. He reminds me a lot of Phillip Brooks and what he does for our offense. Obviously, had a play a year ago that we missed them in the backfield for what I guess, ultimately, was the winning touchdown. We're going to have to try to throw a lot of people around him.”On the hostile environment in Stillwater...“You just go. I'm hoping that our guys are so focused on the task at hand and just executing their stuff one play at a time that it can be in Hell and it doesn't matter. We're going to go out there and try to do our thing.”On saving some blitz packages...“Yeah, again, situational football. It’s going to dictate what we do and how we do it. We've got a lot of a lot of stuff in the cache. If that's what you're asking, we do.”On if Khalid Duke has responded well with his injury situation...“Yeah, he has, and Khalid’s so good as a teammate. He’s obviously upset just because he cares and wants to be out there and wants to help us, but he is. He understands the situation that he's in. Don't enjoy it, but he understands it. He's going to work to get back. I think he's seeing the success of guys like TJ Smith that have had that similar type of thing and are now back performing at a high level. I think that's the goal for him.”
