The Salina Liberty erased a 13-point halftime deficit on Saturday to hand the Billings Outlaws their second loss of the season by a final score of 34-19.

This win moves Salina from the middle of the pack to a tie for second with the Outlaws and Storm at 4-2 with a big four-game swing ahead to close out the season.

“This is the last time we play at home for two weeks so to get this one in front of our crowd was huge,” Liberty HC Heron O’Neal said. “All we can do is control our own destiny and put ourselves in a position to give ourselves a shot. You can’t win a championship if you don’t make the playoffs.”

The Outlaws, who came back to defeat the Liberty 42-34 earlier this season, picked up right where they left off, blanking Salina in the first half and closing out both quarters with a score to take a 13-0 lead into the intermission.

From there, the Liberty switched it up to slowly chip away at the Outlaw advantage and eventually build a lead of their own.

“We ran a bunch of things in the first half to see what worked and my assistants really put a great plan together in the second half and made all the right calls,” O’Neal said. “The credit goes to them.”

Billings had missed two field goals in the first half and in the third quarter another attempt at three came up short to Dewayne Autrey, who hit the afterburners to house the return from 45-yards out.

Still pitching a second-half shutout, the defense got to work wreaking havoc as Tron Folsom scooped up a fumble and took it 16-yards to paydirt to give the Liberty their first lead of the day 14-13.

Billings battled back and elected to go for it on a fourth and goal but K-Hop sprung into action and picked off McCullum’s pass to put the Liberty offense back on the field.

Perhaps inspired by the support of their defense and special teams, the Salina offense kicked things into high gear, finding their first points of the contest on a pitch and catch from Espinoza to Washington to begin to pull away.

McCullum would find Garry Brown to pull the Outlaws back within two but the Liberty would rattle off 13 unanswered courtesy of their running game to bookend a Dontra Matthews interception and put the game away for good.

“Our defense played with the heart of a lion and they kept us in that game,” O’Neal said. “To play the way they did and with our special teams playing the way they did, I loved it. This was a battle of two gladiators and we were the last man standing.”

The Liberty will now turn their attention to a long road trip that will see them at Omaha on May 14th, Sioux City on the 21st, and SW Kansas on June 4th, with one final home game against Topeka on May 28th.

Kansas defeated Kansas State 5-3 in the opener of the Dillons Sunflower Showdown in a weekend baseball series between the two programs. Game two is set for Saturday at 4 p.m. at Tointon Family Stadium.

KU wins baseball series opener

With the first half of the CIF season in the books, the Salina Liberty will look to finish strong, starting with an opportunity to avenge a 42-34 loss to Billings this Saturday in front of a home crowd.

At 3-2, the Liberty find themselves in the middle of the pack with five games left to play, but with a newly acquired QB and a renewed sense of focus, Salina has an excellent opportunity to climb through the ranks before postseason play in June.

When the Liberty and Outlaws met in Billings back in early April, both defenses put on a show, as neither team found the end zone for a majority of the second half.

Unfortunately, two untimely fumbles set the Outlaws up for a big 14-point swing that they would use to take their maiden CIF win.

“You’re not going to beat this Billings team in the 30s,” Salina HC Heron O’Neal said. “We gave them 14 points off turnovers but if we can limit that we’ll give ourselves a great shot.”

Both Liberty losses this season were sustained while shorthanded, with O’Neal and a handful of players serving two-game suspensions from the league.

Outside of that sample size, Salina is 3-0 with a win over the reigning champion Omaha Beef, and this game provides an opportunity for the Liberty to take down another title hopeful.

&nbsp;“Billings has great leadership on both sides of the ball,” O’Neal said. “D’Nerius Antione played linebacker in the NFL and Charles McCullum is number one in IFL history in almost every passing category. This team also has five NFL linemen between the two sides so they’re supremely stacked up front and they add one of the best receivers to ever play in Tyron Laughinghouse.”

Laughinghouse, who caught a pivotal touchdown in the first meeting between the two, has racked up a league-leading 11 touchdowns thanks to the stellar QB play of McCullum, who himself leads the league with 22 touchdown passes.

“McCullum has a lot of experience above his shoulders,” he said. “He calls his own plays, he has championship experience and his arm talent and speed are still there. He looks like what someone would come up with in a Madden’s “create-a-player.”

Opposite the veteran gunslinger will be Vincent Espinoza, who dazzled in his first start since college, helping the Liberty take down Rapid City last week.

“Espinoza is the guy moving forward,” O’Neal said. “He was very efficient and had three touchdowns to only one interception so I was very happy with that. He’s an intelligent kid and it takes a lot to rattle him, we’re very impressed with him.”

Salina and Billings currently rank 3rd and 4th in scoring offense and defense, and will be primed to put on a show in a potential playoff preview on Saturday.

Game 2 will start approximately 30 minutes after Game 1 ends. The broadcast will begin at Sunday at noon ( CT ) and coninue through the conclusion of game 2.

MANHATTAN, Kan.&nbsp;– Kansas State head coach&nbsp;Jerome Tang&nbsp;announced on Thursday (May 5) the addition of NJCAA honorable mention All-American&nbsp;Nae’Qwan Tomlin&nbsp;(New York City, N.Y./Urban Assembly School/Chipola [Fla.] College), who signed a Financial Aid Agreement with the program for the 2022-23 season.

A 6-foot-8, 195-pound small forward arrives at K-State after playing two seasons (2020-22) at NJCAA power Chipola College in Marianna, Florida. The Indians advanced to the national semifinals of the NJCAA National Tournament both seasons, while posting a 53-11 (.828) record and collecting consecutive Panhandle Conference and NJCAA Region 8 Tournament Championships under head coach&nbsp;Donnie Tyndall.

<a></a><a>“Nae’Qwan is a really outstanding addition to our family, and we are excited to have him at K-State,” said Tang. “It was important for us to add a player with some college experience, and he certainly fits that bill after having scored more than 1,000 points in the junior college ranks. The mini-pep rally format that will feature K-State student-athletes, coaches, Willie Wildcat and the K-State cheer team begins on Tuesday, May 17 with stops in Salina (2-4 p.m.) and Great Bend (6-8 p.m.), and continues on Wednesday, May 18, in Hays (8:30-10 a.m.), Colby (11:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.) and Scott City (6-8 p.m.), while week one of the tour finishes on Thursday, May 19 as it hits Liberal (8-10 a.m.), Dodge City (2-4 p.m.) and Garden City (6-8 p.m.).

Scheduled to appear during the first week is head football coach&nbsp;Chris Klieman, men’s basketball associate head coach&nbsp;Ulric Maligi&nbsp;in addition to assistant coaches from women’s basketball and select student-athletes.

Week two sees the Catbacker Tour hit stops throughout the eastern and central parts of the state as Tuesday, May 24 will be in Emporia (12-2 p.m.) and Kansas City (6-8 p.m.). The Rams dominated McMain in the Class 4A State Championship, 66-31, with Finister contributing 14 points, 6 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals and 2 blocks in 25 minutes.

During his career at Carver, Finister averaged 12.7 points on 63.4 percent (497-of-784) shooting, including 43.8 percent (60-of-137) from 3-point range, to go with 7.3 rebounds, 4.5 assists, 1.8 steals and 1.5 blocks in 103 games played. The versatile guard scored 20 or more points in 10 games, while adding 20 double-doubles (points/rebounds and points/assists) and 3 triples-doubles (points/rebounds/assists) in his career. His career-high of 26 points came on 9-of-15 field goals and 7-of-9 free throws as a junior vs. Landry on Dec. 15, 2020.

Fresh off a bye week and with a new QB under center, the Salina Liberty dominated the expansion Marshals in a 55-7 rout of Rapid City.

With a critical bounce-back win, Salina moves back above .500 at 3-2 while the Marshals fall to 1-4.

“It feels great to be back and I’m serenely happy that we came out and put a good performance up,” Salina HC Heron O’Neal said. “Offensively our goal was to score over 50 points and defensively we held them to seven, I’ll take that all day.”

All eyes in the Tony’s Pizza Events Center were on newly signed quarterback Vincent Espinoza, who put on a show in his CIF debut, with three touchdowns in a comfortable Liberty win.

Espinoza would complete 70% of his passes for over 100 yards and two TDs through the air, adding a QB sneak to get the scoring started.

Rookie Triston Gould would score the first touchdown of his Liberty career just before the quarter break, and in answer to Coach O’Neal’s challenge to create more turnovers, Tron Folsom housed a pick-six on the first play of the second quarter.

Espinoza’s first passing touchdown would come a short while later on a goal-line toss to Demarius Washington, and following a Tre Griffin scamper to put the Liberty ahead 34-0 Dewayne Autrey tacked on a second INT to send Salina into the half in style.

The Liberty continued to dominate in the second half, holding Rapid City off the board until the fourth quarter en route to the 55-17 win.

This was a true team victory as Salina looked steady in all three facets of the game, and it appears the search for Tyrie Adams’ successor may be at an end already after a stellar debut by Espinoza.

“I loved our kickoff game today and we had some explosions on return,” O’Neal said. “We need to clean some of those things up with a tough team in Billings coming in here next week. We have to get that killer instinct back.”

Salina will wrap up their three-game homestand when the Liberty host the Outlaws on Saturday, May 7.

Kansas Wesleyan's&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kwucoyotes.com/roster/23/8/12994">Daniel Harkin</a>&nbsp;(FR/Manhattan, Kan.) was named the KCAC Men's Tennis Freshman of the Year, and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kwucoyotes.com/roster/23/8/12374">Josh Molino</a>&nbsp;was named the KCAC Men's Tennis Coach of the Year headlining KWU's All-KCAC Men's Tennis selections.

Harkin has been phenomenal for the Coyotes in his freshman campaign, posting a 12-8 overall record in singles and a 12-8 overall record in doubles play this season, including the fall tournament season. Harkin posted a 6-3 record on conference play for the Coyotes at No. 1 singles. He posted a 7-2 conference record in doubles play along with partner&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kwucoyotes.com/roster/23/8/12996">Alex Sherer</a>&nbsp;(FR/Rossville, Kan.). He was named First Team All-KCAC

Molino has led the Coyotes to an incredible turnaround from a year ago. The Coyotes finished 7-2 in the KCAC this season, after not winning a match last year in conference play. Molino has done a phenomenal job building the team this season for the Coyotes.

Sherer was 7-2 in the KCAC at the No. 3 singles position for the Coyotes, and had a 12-5 overall record in singles in the spring season. He was 11-5 at No. 3 singles and had one win at No. 2 as well. He had a 10-7 overall record in doubles for the Coyotes, including a 7-2 mark in the KCAC in doubles.

The KCAC also announced its 2022 KCAC Scholar-Athletes for men's tennis.&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kwucoyotes.com/roster/23/8/12376">Caleb Carter</a>&nbsp;(SR/Edmond, Okla.) was named to the Scholar-Athlete team.

MANHATTAN, Kan.&nbsp;–&nbsp;Kansas State quarterback&nbsp;Skylar Thompson&nbsp;and defensive back&nbsp;Russ Yeast&nbsp;were selected during the seventh round of the 2022 NFL Draft on Saturday. Thompson was taken by the Miami Dolphins with the 247th&nbsp;selection, while Yeast was chosen six picks later – No. 253 – by the Los Angeles Rams.

With the selections, Kansas State has had at least one player drafted in 28 of the last 29 years. It was the 16th&nbsp;time during that stretch that multiple Wildcats were selected.

Thompson became the fourth Wildcat selected by Miami all-time and the first since running back Daniel Thomas in 2011. He is the first K-State quarterback selected in the NFL Draft since Josh Freeman was selected by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers with the 17th&nbsp;overall pick in 2009. Yeast is the first Wildcat taken by the Rams since defensive back Jerametrius Butler was selected by the organization in 2001 when it was located in St. Louis, while he is the sixth Wildcat all-time chosen by the Rams.

Thompson played in 45 career games with 40 starts over parts of five seasons. His 40 starts and 24 career wins as a starting quarterback are the most among all K-State signal callers since at least 1990, while he is the only player in school history with 6,000 passing yards and 1,000 rushing yards in a career.

A product Independence, Missouri, Thompson set the K-State career record for lowest interception percentage (1.81), a figure that ranks seventh in Big 12 history. He also ranks second in passing touchdowns (42), passing yards (7,134), completions (552) and total offense yards (8,221), while he is third in touchdowns responsible for (68), completion percentage (62.4%) and passing attempts (855).

During his final campaign of 2021, Thompson set the school record in single-season completion percentage (59.53%), while he ranked second in school history in passing efficiency (159.3). Additionally, Thompson was eighth nationally and tops in the Big 12 in passing yards per attempt (9.07).

Thompson went out on top during his final game as a Wildcat, helping K-State capture its eighth win with a 42-20 victory over LSU in the Texas Bowl. He went 21-of-28 for 259 yards and a career-high tying three touchdowns with no interceptions against the Tigers en route to Texas Bowl MVP honors. Thompson tied for second in K-State bowl history in completions and completion percentage (75.0), tied for third in touchdown passes, ranked sixth in passing yards and tied for eighth in passing attempts.

Yeast, a transfer from Louisville, made a major impact during his lone season in Manhattan as he was a First Team All-Big 12 performer by the league’s coaches in 2021 after recording 48 tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss, four interceptions and 14 total passes defended. Yeast, who also earned votes for the Big 12 Defensive Newcomer of the Year award, led the Big 12 in total passes defended (14), carding at least one in 10 of his 13 games played, while he ranked 14th&nbsp;in the nation and second in the Big 12 in interceptions (4). Over his five-year college career, Yeast totaled 185 tackles, five interceptions and 24 total passes defended.

Thompson was taken by the Miami Dolphins with the 247th&nbsp;selection, while Yeast was chosen six picks later – No. 253 – by the Los Angeles Rams.With the selections, Kansas State has had at least one player drafted in 28 of the last 29 years. It was the 16th&nbsp;time during that stretch that multiple Wildcats were selected.Thompson became the fourth Wildcat selected by Miami all-time and the first since running back Daniel Thomas in 2011. He is the first K-State quarterback selected in the NFL Draft since Josh Freeman was selected by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers with the 17th&nbsp;overall pick in 2009. Yeast is the first Wildcat taken by the Rams since defensive back Jerametrius Butler was selected by the organization in 2001 when it was located in St. Louis, while he is the sixth Wildcat all-time chosen by the Rams.Thompson played in 45 career games with 40 starts over parts of five seasons. His 40 starts and 24 career wins as a starting quarterback are the most among all K-State signal callers since at least 1990, while he is the only player in school history with 6,000 passing yards and 1,000 rushing yards in a career.A product Independence, Missouri, Thompson set the K-State career record for lowest interception percentage (1.81), a figure that ranks seventh in Big 12 history. He also ranks second in passing touchdowns (42), passing yards (7,134), completions (552) and total offense yards (8,221), while he is third in touchdowns responsible for (68), completion percentage (62.4%) and passing attempts (855).During his final campaign of 2021, Thompson set the school record in single-season completion percentage (59.53%), while he ranked second in school history in passing efficiency (159.3). Additionally, Thompson was eighth nationally and tops in the Big 12 in passing yards per attempt (9.07).Thompson went out on top during his final game as a Wildcat, helping K-State capture its eighth win with a 42-20 victory over LSU in the Texas Bowl. He went 21-of-28 for 259 yards and a career-high tying three touchdowns with no interceptions against the Tigers en route to Texas Bowl MVP honors. Thompson tied for second in K-State bowl history in completions and completion percentage (75.0), tied for third in touchdown passes, ranked sixth in passing yards and tied for eighth in passing attempts.Yeast, a transfer from Louisville, made a major impact during his lone season in Manhattan as he was a First Team All-Big 12 performer by the league’s coaches in 2021 after recording 48 tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss, four interceptions and 14 total passes defended. Yeast, who also earned votes for the Big 12 Defensive Newcomer of the Year award, led the Big 12 in total passes defended (14), carding at least one in 10 of his 13 games played, while he ranked 14th&nbsp;in the nation and second in the Big 12 in interceptions (4). Over his five-year college career, Yeast totaled 185 tackles, five interceptions and 24 total passes defended.&nbsp;

Born on September 2, 1938, in Hastings, Nebraska, Douglas played three seasons (1957-60) for Hall of Fame head coach&nbsp;Tex Winter, helping the Wildcats during a period of great success that included a 63-17 (.788) record, the 1958 Final Four and three consecutive Big Eight Conference regular-season titles (1957-58, 1958-59 and 1959-60).

He was part of teams that finished among the top-20 all three seasons, including Top 5 finishes in 1957-58 (No. 3 AP and No. 4 UPI) and 1958-59 (No. 1 AP and UPI).

K-State Mourns the Passing of Steve Douglas

After a much-needed bye week, the Salina Liberty will return to the Tony’s Pizza Events Center for their fifth CIF contest of the season as they get their first look at the expansion Marshals of Rapid City on Saturday.

The Liberty enter this contest at 2-2 after dropping back-to-back games for the first time since 2019 while Rapid City, still trying to find traction, will come in at 1-3.

Over the course of the week, Salina’s quest to replace reigning Offensive Rookie of the Year Tyrie Adams continued, and the Liberty found their man in former IFL QB Vincent Espinoza.

“He’s a kid that we’ve been looking at for a couple of years,” Liberty HC Heron O’Neal said. “He has the experience and he’s a good-sized guy who can make every throw you need. He’s a dual-threat with a lot of intelligence and this will be the first QB1 experience of his career.”

O’Neal, who returns from a two-game suspension this week, highlighted that the bye could not have come at a better time for Salina, who needed a reset before the final six weeks of the season.

“That bye week was key because it gave us time to find our new QB and it gave me a chance to reset and spend some time with my family,” he said. “It’s been a tough couple of weeks but we’re refreshed and ready to make a push to the playoffs.”

The Liberty now turn their attention to another new expansion team in Rapid City, a squad whose head coach O’Neal has faced as a player, and whose DC he worked under early in his career.

“Their defensive coordinator baptized me many years ago with the team that he had in 2005 in Everett,” O’Neal said. “He’s a hall of fame coach and he’s probably forgotten more football than what 3/4 of the league’s coaches have ever known.”

As for the matchup on the field, getting Espinoza comfortable and up to speed with the CIF game will be paramount in re-establishing the Liberty offense after a few middling weeks.

“We need to get our quarterback into a rhythm early in this game,” he said. “He’s still learning how we do things, especially on a game day&nbsp; but I think his indoor experience will have him prepared for the speed of the game.”

On the flipside, the Salina defense has continued to impress but will be looking to generate more turnovers as the season heats up.

Espinoza named new QB as Liberty host expansion Marshals

Retired University of Illinois professor Steve Douglas, who also served 
as the first head coach of the Fighting Illini women's basketball 
program, died Tuesday from terminal cancer. He was 83. Daughters Kate 
and Liz Douglas were with their dad in his home in Marina del Rey 
Calif., as was his wife Vianne Weintraub. Daughter Lauren Douglas joined
 them from Seattle, via Zoom.

Douglas was an associate professor of political science in the spring
 of 1974 when Women's Athletic Director Karol Kahrs chose him to be head
 coach of the inaugural Illini Women's Basketball team. He was paid 
$1,000 for the season. Douglas earned the women's coaching job for two 
reasons: He'd coached the women's national team in Malaysia, and he was 
team captain for Tex Winter's top-ranked Kansas State Wildcats, playing 
in the 1958, '59 and '60 seasons. 
&nbsp; 
His tenure as a Illini coach was always meant to be brief. After two 
seasons coaching the women, Douglas handed the job off to a full-time 
coach and returned his focus to Malaysian and Indonesian political 
studies — and raising three daughters, while their mom, Sara Umberger 
Douglas, earned a PhD of her own in 1983. Her dissertation, Labor's New 
Voice: Unions and the Mass Media, was published in 1986, and she 
accepted a tenure-track position in the college eventually known as 
ACES.

Stephen Arneal Douglas was born September 2, 1938, in Hastings, 
Nebraska. His parents, Louis H. Douglas and Mary Alice (Burton) Douglas,
 were both teachers, coaches and athletes. Mary was also a pilot, and 
her son's biggest fan as he grew into an elite athlete. Lou Douglas 
accepted a job in the political science department at Kansas State, 
after spending a year in the Philippines, learning about its political 
systems. He became known as an early advocate for civil rights.&nbsp; 
&nbsp; 
Steve Douglas graduated high school in Manhattan, Kansas, and then 
stayed in town for college, and basketball. At the time, Kansas State 
was among the best basketball programs in the nation. Head coach Tex 
Winter is still remembered for his Triangle Offense, which he later 
taught to Michael Jordan and the NBA Champion Chicago Bulls. Douglas 
played alongside lifelong friend Bill Guthridge, who eventually became 
head men's coach for the North Carolina Tarheels.

Upon graduation from KSU, Steve Douglas enrolled in graduate school at 
Illinois, then married his sweetheart Sara Umberger in the summer of 
1961. They lived in Indonesia in the early 1960s while he studied 
political systems of the South Pacific, and she managed the Ford 
Foundation's Jakarta guest house and taught English at the Indonesian 
American Friendship Institute. They returned to Urbana, where he earned 
his PhD and became a tenured professor of Political Science, and began a
 family. Daughter Kate arrived in 1966. Liz followed in 1968, and Lauren
 in 1973.&nbsp; 
&nbsp; 
Douglas' dissertation was titled Political Socialization in Indonesia.In
 2003, he published "Suharto: A political biography." That same year, 
Sara died of complications stemming from her treatment for thymic 
carcinoma.&nbsp;

After retiring from the Political Science department, Douglas moved to 
southern California. He married Vianne Weintraub in 2008. She survives.

High school sports postponements

<a href="https://www.kwucoyotes.com/roster/23/8/12996">Alex Sherer</a>&nbsp;(FR/Rossville, Kan.) struggled in his second set against Tabor's Mikel Alexander in Thursday's KCAC First Round match at Salina Central High School.

The decisive, and match-clinching third set was a different story.

Sherer refocused his efforts and came away with a 6-4, 1-6, 6-1 win in his match at No. 3 singles helping the third-seeded Kansas Wesleyan Coyotes clinch the match overall by a 4-2 score to advance to Friday's semifinal against Southwestern at Kossover Tennis Complex in Topeka.

Sherer slammed the ball down the center line for the final point and fell to his knees in celebration as his teammates joined him on the court.

It marked the second straight year the Coyotes have advanced to the semifinal round in the KCAC tournament, last year beating Bethany in the first round to advance.

Sherer's was one of three wins in singles for the Coyotes in the match.

After dropping the first set 6-4, Ware came back to win the second 6-3 and was up 5-2 in the third set, serving for the match, when Sherer wrapped up his match just yards away ending it.

The Coyotes also captured the doubles point winning two of the three matches. Harkin and Sherer beat Garcia and Hauschildt 6-2, and Ware and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kwucoyotes.com/roster/23/8/12997">Garrison Wright</a>&nbsp;(FR/Maize, Kan.) beat Alexander and Jean Paul Fort 7-5 at the No. 2 spot.
