MANHATTAN, Kansas&nbsp;–&nbsp;The Rotary Lombardi Award listed two Kansas State football players among its 77-man watch list, as defensive end&nbsp;Felix Anudike-Uzomah&nbsp;and offensive lineman&nbsp;Cooper Beebe&nbsp;were named candidates for the award on Monday.

The Lombardi Award, which is presented by the Rotary Club of Houston, goes to the top college football down lineman on either side of the ball or a linebacker. Anudike-Uzomah and Beebe are the first Wildcats to be candidates for the award since current Chicago Bear offensive lineman Cody Whitehair was on the preseason watch list in 2015. A K-State player has been a candidate 11 other times, while defensive tackle Tim Colston was a semifinalist in 1995.

It was the second watch list designation for Anudike-Uzomah on Monday as he was named to the Chuck Bednarik Award watch list earlier in the day, while it was his third of the preseason after also being named to the Bronko Nagurski Trophy watch list last Tuesday. The inclusion on the Lombardi Award watch list is the second for Beebe, who was on the Outland Trophy watch list last Tuesday.

Anudike-Uzomah earned All-America honors last season in addition to being the Big 12 Defensive Lineman of the Year and a First Team All-Big 12 performer. He tied for the national lead in forced fumbles per game (0.46), ranked 11th nationally in sacks per game (0.85), and his 11.0 total sacks tied for fifth in school history. Additionally, he totaled six forced fumbles to tie the school record.

Beebe, a product of Kansas City, Kansas, was a 13-game starter at left tackle last year who picked up First Team All-Big 12 honors from both the league’s coaches and Associated Press, the youngest offensive lineman to be named to the first team by either organization. Beebe was the first Wildcat freshman or sophomore offensive lineman to be named a First Team All-Big 12 performer since Dalton Risner in 2016, while he also earned votes for the Big 12 Offensive Lineman of the Year Award from the league’s coaches.

Two Wildcats Earn Recognition on Lombardi Award Watch List

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. — It was a warm, muggy day for the first fully padded practice at Chiefs training camp Monday.

It
 was a productive, straightforward practice that was a bit shorter, per 
NFL rules. There was a brief scare for fans when Patrick Mahomes 
slightly tweaked his left leg toward the end of practice.

He
 went to the medical tent to get tape on his lower left leg, and he was 
back on the field doing individual drills before practice ended.

Head coach Andy Reid says Mahomes will be fine, and he felt that the first day in pads was solid overall.

"You
 play in these things and you get used to them," he said. "That's what 
this is all about. We try to do it where guys are off the ground and 
they can get the work in and keep people healthy, but still play hard 
and get ourselves into football shape for a game."

Going back to 
Mahomes briefly, he told ESPN's Adam Teicher, "I got stepped on pretty 
hard... luckily it wasn't any of the ankle or anything like that."

Elsewhere, tight end Jody Forston was held out Monday with a quad strain, but he’ll be back in a few days, says Reid.

No
 Orlando Brown Jr. yet, though he’s expected to be at camp any day. 
Reports Monday indicate that Brown has signed his franchise tag, which 
will pay him $16.6 million this season.

Brown has to pass a 
physical and conditioning test before practicing. Reid said he doesn't 
precisely know when Brown will be on the field.

"When he gets 
here, we'll talk to him and see where he's at and be smart with it," 
Reid said. "When the fish is in the boat, I'll let you know."

Brown
 was acquired in a trade with the Ravens last year and he’s a three-time
 Pro Bowler. He’s expected to again be the go-to guy at left tackle. In 
his absence, fifth-year pro Roderick Johnson has been anchoring that 
position.

The former Blue Springs and Kansas State star is in his sixth year in the NFL and his first in a Chiefs uniform.

"I
 went to high school in Blue Springs, so I was 15 miles east of the 
stadium," Lee said. "Just riding by, you wish and hope to be in this 
position. Now that I'm in it, I'm thankful. It's a blessing and I have 
to take advantage of the opportunity."

Lee has been getting 
first-team reps at outside linebacker after spending a decent chunk of 
his career either on practice squads or special teams. He’s grasped the 
scheme well, but Lee wants to keep earning his spot.

"I'm a guy 
trying to earn my spot and I do that each and every way," he said. "So, 
whatever my role is, I'm going to take advantage of that, and then we 
can talk after that. But, right now, it's all about the work."

&nbsp;Lee
 spent his freshman and sophomore year of high school at St. Joseph 
Central before transferring to Blue Springs. He says being back at the 
Mosaic Training Fields does invoke some memories from his days in St. 
Joe.

"We used to come over here and I was a towel boy and gave the
 water," Lee recalled. "So, I got to hand over towels to Tamba Hali and 
Justin Houston. And I'm like, 'Wow. Like, this is amazing.' So now, to 
come back and be in this position, this is a great opportunity."

Lee
 has spent time with the Vikings, 49ers, Lions and Browns. He's appeared
 in 66 games, making six starts. He owns 99 career tackles, including 
four tackles for loss.

Travis Kelce - likes the Chiefs, but not the helmet guardian caps

The
 seven-time Pro Bowler and a fan favorite at tight end, Kelce is 
entering his 10th season with the Chiefs - all under Andy Reid.

Kelce left no doubt - he'll finish out his career in Kansas City.

"I
 don't see myself going anywhere else, man," he said. "(Reid) makes the 
game fun, makes the game easy on a lot of us. On top of that, we know 
he's giving it his all. I joke about it all the time - I never see his 
car move from the parking lot at Arrowhead. He's doing everything he can
 to set us up for success."

While Kelce is fond of the Kingdom, 
he's not so fond of the new guardian caps - the soft shells that go over
 players’ helmets and are designed to curb head injuries.

Linemen, linebackers and tight ends are all required to wear them through the second week of the preseason.

 Numerous other players around the league have been critical of them. That list now includes Kelce.

"I think the guardian caps are silly," Kelce remarked, noting that they look like "mushroom caps" that "add extra weight."

The Chiefs are back at practice Tuesday morning.

Chiefs have first padded practice; Mahomes OK after scare

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. — The Kansas City 
Chiefs officially concluded their first week of training camp with a 
Saturday morning practice - the last workout in half pads before full 
pads go on Monday.

Offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy says the 
start to camp has been encouraging, but he noticed a lack of focus 
amongst his group Saturday.

"The effort was outstanding,"
 Bieniemy said. "You can practice hard, but activity don't always equate
 to productivity. We have to make sure we're maximizing and detailing 
the little things that's going to help us become the offense we want to 
become."

Personnel wise, a pair of rookies on the offensive side 
had a chance to shine Saturday. Rookie receiver Skyy Moore continues to 
get reps with the first-team offense and is looking more the part as 
camp goes on.

Moore had a diving catch in tight coverage on a deep ball for the second day in a row Saturday.

"(Moore)
 goes out there and finds a way to get the job done on the next initial 
play," Bieniemy noted. "The thing he's also been great with is in the 
classroom, he's been receptive to the information. On top of that, he's 
seeing it and he has an opportunity to autocorrect. He'll very rarely 
repeat the same things twice."

Perhaps the biggest surprise 
Saturday was seeking rookie running back and seventh-round pick Isiah 
Pacheco getting reps with the first-team offense, rotating with Jerick 
McKinnon and Clyde Edwards-Helaire.

Pacheco has clear speed. He's 
also been getting some time on kick return this week. McKinnon, a 
ninth-year pro who just re-signed with the Chiefs in June, called 
Pacheco "a humble guy" whose work ethic is "top tier."

Clark
 spoke at length at the end of practice, and seemed to be in great 
spirits. He revealed that he's cut red meat and alcohol out of his diet 
as soon as the season ended in February.

Clark said he didn't feel as quick, and felt that he at times looked "sloppy" last season.

"I
 wanted to get back to feeling my feet," he said. "I feel like I wasn't 
feeling my feet as much last year. I wasn't as quick off the ball. I 
wasn't as explosive. I mean, it's obvious. You can watch the film and 
see I was way heavier. I had a gut. I was looking sloppy. I'm a 
professional, you know? I understand how this goes."

Clark has 
been several times this camp talking and working with fellow defensive 
end and rookie George Karlaftis, who was drafted 30th overall by the 
Chiefs this year out of Purdue.

Clark described a moment in 
Saturday's practice where Karlaftis asked him how to come off the ball 
quicker and be quicker on the snap. When Karlaftis tried doing what 
Clark told him to, the rookie couldn't wait to tell the seasoned veteran
 all about it.

"That was the most excited I've seen a rookie," 
said Clark. "His ability to retain the knowledge I was telling him and 
for him to go do it and for him to feel it and see the success from it. I
 was happy and enjoyed his fruits. At the end of the day, that's how I 
feel about George."

Clark is still waiting to see what will come 
of his current legal matters. He had two offseason arrests in California
 in 2021, and has pleaded not guilty to two counts of possession of an 
assault weapon.

Clark was arrested both times on suspicion of 
having a concealed firearm in a vehicle. He could face a suspension from
 the NFL for violation of their personal conduct policy.

Clark didn't go into much detail Saturday, other than he "feels good" about where he and his legal team are at on things.

Tight
 end Jody Forston left practice early Saturday due to a quad injury. The
 team says they’ll know more Monday. Otherwise, nothing new. Lucas 
Niang, Prince Tega Wanogho and Rashad Fenton are still on the injured 
list. Orlando Brown, Jr. has yet to sign and report.

With
 Brown still not present, that's opened the door for Roderick Johnson to
 be the go-to guy at left tackle initially. On Saturday, there was the 
first sign of rotation there, as Johnson worked at right tackle and 
Andrew Wylie moved to left tackle.

The Chiefs rest Sunday, and will return Monday for a full contact practice in full pads. Let the games begin.

Full pads in Chiefs training camp beginning Monday

MANHATTAN, Kansas&nbsp;–&nbsp;Kansas State junior defensive end&nbsp;Felix Anudike-Uzomah&nbsp;landed on his second watch list in as many weeks, as the Maxwell Football Club put out the Chuck Bednarik Award watch list on Monday.

Anudike-Uzomah was also on the Bronko Nagurski Trophy watch list, which was announced last Tuesday. The Bednarik Award has been presented to the College Defensive Player of the Year since 1994. It is the 24th&nbsp;time a Wildcat is a candidate for the award, with 17 of those coming since 2011.

A native of Kansas City, Missouri, Anudike-Uzomah earned All-America honors last season in addition to being the Big 12 Defensive Lineman of the Year and a First Team All-Big 12 performer. NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said in a statement that Russell was "the greatest champion in all of team sports."

"Bill stood for something much bigger than sports: the values of equality, respect and inclusion that he stamped into the DNA of our league. At the height of his athletic career, Bill advocated vigorously for civil rights and social justice, a legacy he passed down to generations of NBA players who followed in his footsteps," Silver said. "Through the taunts, threats and unthinkable adversity, Bill rose above it all and remained true to his belief that everyone deserves to be treated with dignity.

A Hall of Famer, five-time Most Valuable Player and 12-time All-Star, Russell in 1980 was voted the greatest player in the NBA history by basketball writers. He remains the sport's most prolific winner as a player and an archetype of selflessness who won with defense and rebounding while leaving the scoring to others. Often, that meant Wilt Chamberlain, the only player of the era who was a worthy rival for Russell.

But Russell dominated in the only stat he cared about: 11 championships to two.

The native of Louisiana also left a lasting mark as a Black athlete in a city — and country — where race is often a flash point. He was at the March on Washington in 1963, when King gave his "I Have a Dream" speech, and he backed Muhammad Ali when the boxer was pilloried for refusing induction into the military draft.

"To be the greatest champion in your sport, to revolutionize the way the game is played, and to be a societal leader all at once seems unthinkable, but that is who Bill Russell was," the Boston Celtics said in a statement.

In 2011, President Barack Obama awarded Russell the Medal of Freedom alongside Congressman John Lewis, billionaire investor Warren Buffett, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and baseball great Stan Musial.

"Bill Russell, the man, is someone who stood up for the rights and dignity of all men," Obama said at the ceremony. "He marched with King; he stood by Ali. When a restaurant refused to serve the Black Celtics, he refused to play in the scheduled game. He endured insults and vandalism, but he kept on focusing on making the teammates who he loved better players and made possible the success of so many who would follow."

Russell said that when he was growing up in the segregated South and later California his parents instilled in him the calm confidence that allowed him to brush off racist taunts.

"Years later, people asked me what I had to go through," Russell said in 2008. "Unfortunately, or fortunately, I've never been through anything. From my first moment of being alive was the notion that my mother and father loved me." It was Russell's mother who would tell him to disregard comments from those who might see him playing in the yard.

"Whatever they say, good or bad, they don't know you," he recalled her saying. "They're wrestling with their own demons."

But it was Jackie Robinson who gave Russell a road map for dealing with racism in his sport: "Jackie was a hero to us. He always conducted himself as a man. He showed me the way to be a man in professional sports."

The feeling was mutual, Russell learned, when Robinson's widow, Rachel, called and asked him to be a pallbearer at her husband's funeral in 1972.

"She hung the phone up and I asked myself, 'How do you get to be a hero to Jackie Robinson?'" Russell said. "I was so flattered."

William Felton Russell was born on Feb. 12, 1934, in Monroe, Louisiana. He was a child when his family moved to the West Coast, and he went to high school in Oakland, California, and then the University of San Francisco. He led the Dons to NCAA championships in 1955 and 1956 and won a gold medal in 1956 at the Melbourne Olympics in Australia.

Celtics coach and general manager Red Auerbach so coveted Russell that he worked out a trade with the St. Louis Hawks for the second pick in the draft. He promised the Rochester Royals, who owned the No. 1 pick, a lucrative visit by the Ice Capades, which were also run by Celtics owner Walter Brown.

Still, Russell arrived in Boston to complaints that he wasn't that good. "People said it was a wasted draft choice, wasted money," he recalled. "They said, 'He's no good. All he can do is block shots and rebound.' And Red said, 'That's enough.'"

The Celtics also picked up Tommy Heinsohn and K.C. Jones, Russell's college teammate, in the same draft. Although Russell joined the team late because he was leading the U.S. to the Olympic gold, Boston finished the regular season with the league's best record.

The Celtics won the NBA championship — their first of 17 — in a double-overtime seventh game against Bob Pettit's St. Louis Hawks. Russell won his first MVP award the next season, but the Hawks won the title in a finals rematch. The Celtics won it all again in 1959, starting an unprecedented string of eight consecutive NBA crowns.

A 6-foot-10 center, Russell never averaged more than 18.9 points during his 13 seasons, each year averaging more rebounds per game than points. For 10 seasons he averaged more than 20 rebounds. He once had 51 rebounds in a game; Chamberlain holds the record with 55.

Auerbach retired after winning the 1966 title, and Russell became the player-coach — the first Black head coach in NBA history, and almost a decade before Frank Robinson took over baseball's Cleveland Indians. Boston finished with the second-best regular-season record in the NBA, and its title streak ended with a loss to Chamberlain and the Philadelphia 76ers in the Eastern Division finals.

Russell led the Celtics back to titles in 1968 and '69, each time winning seven-game playoff series against Chamberlain. Russell retired after the '69 finals, returning for a relatively successful — but unfulfilling — four-year stint as coach and GM of the Seattle SuperSonics and a less fruitful half season as coach of the Sacramento Kings.

Russell's No. 6 jersey was retired by the Celtics in 1972. He earned spots on the NBA's 25th anniversary all-time team in 1970, 35th anniversary team in 1980 and 75th anniversary team. In 1996, he was hailed as one of the NBA's 50 greatest players.

In 2009, the MVP trophy of the NBA Finals was named in his honor — even though Russell never won himself, because it wasn't awarded for the first time until 1969. Russell, however, traditionally presented the trophy for many years, the last time in 2019 to Kawhi Leonard; Russell was not there in 2020 because of the NBA bubble nor in 2021 due to COVID-19 concerns.

In 2013, a statue was unveiled on Boston's City Hall Plaza of Russell surrounded by blocks of granite with quotes on leadership and character. Russell was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1975 but did not attend the ceremony, saying he should not have been the first African American elected. (Chuck Cooper, the NBA's first Black player, was his choice.)

In 2019, Russell accepted his Hall of Fame ring in a private gathering. "I felt others before me should have had that honor," he tweeted. "Good to see progress."

Silver said he "often called (Russell) basketball's Babe Ruth for how he transcended time."

"Bill was the ultimate winner and consummate teammate, and his influence on the NBA will be felt forever," Silver added. "We send our deepest condolences to his wife, Jeannine, his family and his many friends."

His family said that arrangements for Russell's memorial service will be announced in the coming days.

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. — Chiefs founder Lamar Hunt used to tell his son, Clark, that his favorite place on the planet was Arrowhead Stadium.

If it's up to the current chairman, the club will be there long into the future.

During his annual trip to training camp, Clark Hunt said Friday that the preference of the Chiefs is to renovate the aging facility east of downtown Kansas City rather than build a new stadium. But that will depend on a number of studies that are examining the structural integrity of a building celebrating its opening 50 years ago this season.

"That would be our No. 1 priority," Hunt said. "We're going to evaluate all options, obviously. We have to figure out what's best for the franchise, what's best for the fan base. But it starts with evaluating Arrowhead and that's where we're at."

The Chiefs have shared the Truman Sports Complex with the Kansas City Royals since the early 1970s, and each of their facilities has gone through extensive renovations financed in part by Jackson County taxpayers. But under the new ownership of John Sherman, the Royals appear to be leaning toward leaving the expanse of concrete parking lots for a downtown site near public transportation and restaurants, shopping and entertainment options.

Their stadium leases last through the 2030-31 seasons, and that means both will need to determine their next step in the next two years. That would give them enough time to secure financing along with formulating plans and construction.

Arrowhead already is due to have minor renovations beginning in 2025 for the World Cup the following year. While some of those figure to be cosmetic upgrades, the majority have to do with seating arrangements in the corners of the stadium, where more space will be needed to fit an international soccer pitch.

In a perfect world, Hunt said, those would be the start of long-term renovations for the third-oldest NFL stadium in use.

"We're very hopeful we'll be able to renovate Arrowhead Stadium when the time comes," he said, "but we're probably still a year-plus from being able to make that determination. What I've learned through the process is it's not a very simple answer when you're trying to determine whether a building can go another 25 or 30 years starting eight years from now."

The future of Arrowhead will be determined just as the Chicago Bears decide whether to leave Soldier Field, which opened in 1924 and is the league's oldest stadium. The franchise signed a purchase agreement last year for the 326-acre site of the old Arlington Park horse racing track, which is about 30 miles northwest of their current stadium, leaving officials in Chicago to explore plans to enclose Soldier Field in a bid to keep the team near the lakefront.

Among the attraction for the Bears, whose lease of Soldier Field runs through 2033, in moving to a new stadium is the ability to own all the revenue it produces, along with potential income from other commercial development.

By contrast, Soldier Field is owned by the Chicago Park District, which limits the financial upside for the franchise.

The only other stadium older than Arrowhead is Lambeau Field, where the Green Bay Packers have played since 1957.

JOSEPH, Mo. — Chiefs founder Lamar Hunt used to tell his son, Clark, that his favorite place on the planet was Arrowhead Stadium.If it's up to the current chairman, the club will be there long into the future.During his annual trip to training camp, Clark Hunt said Friday that the preference of the Chiefs is to renovate the aging facility east of downtown Kansas City rather than build a new stadium. But that will depend on a number of studies that are examining the structural integrity of a building celebrating its opening 50 years ago this season."That would be our No. 1 priority," Hunt said. "We're going to evaluate all options, obviously. We have to figure out what's best for the franchise, what's best for the fan base. But it starts with evaluating Arrowhead and that's where we're at."The Chiefs have shared the Truman Sports Complex with the Kansas City Royals since the early 1970s, and each of their facilities has gone through extensive renovations financed in part by Jackson County taxpayers. But under the new ownership of John Sherman, the Royals appear to be leaning toward leaving the expanse of concrete parking lots for a downtown site near public transportation and restaurants, shopping and entertainment options.Their stadium leases last through the 2030-31 seasons, and that means both will need to determine their next step in the next two years. That would give them enough time to secure financing along with formulating plans and construction.Arrowhead already is due to have minor renovations beginning in 2025 for the World Cup the following year. While some of those figure to be cosmetic upgrades, the majority have to do with seating arrangements in the corners of the stadium, where more space will be needed to fit an international soccer pitch.In a perfect world, Hunt said, those would be the start of long-term renovations for the third-oldest NFL stadium in use."We're very hopeful we'll be able to renovate Arrowhead Stadium when the time comes," he said, "but we're probably still a year-plus from being able to make that determination. What I've learned through the process is it's not a very simple answer when you're trying to determine whether a building can go another 25 or 30 years starting eight years from now."The future of Arrowhead will be determined just as the Chicago Bears decide whether to leave Soldier Field, which opened in 1924 and is the league's oldest stadium. Chiefs' Hunt prefers Arrowhead renovation over new stadium

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. — The Chiefs wrapped 
up their second full day of training camp Thursday on a cool and cloudy 
morning that saw rain showers come to an end as soon as players came on 
the field.

Everyone got work done in half pads, except corner 
Rashad Fenton, offensive tackle Lucas Niang and tackle Prince Tega 
Wanogho, who have been on the injured list since camp.

Orlando
 Brown Jr. was the only player not present. Roderick Johnson, who just 
signed with the Chiefs' on a reserve/future in February, has been 
getting first-team reps at left tackle in Brown Jr.'s place.

One player who was on the injured list Tuesday, but got off Wednesday
 is running back Clye Edwards-Helaire, who says he’s felt fine all week.

He even told Andy Reid Wednesday he would practice.

"I
 was like, 'I'm practicing,'" Edwards-Helaire said. "He was like, 'I 
know you're practicing.' And then it was like, 'Alright, okay high five'
 and out the door. That's all it was."

As Thursday’s practice was 
wrapping up, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that the Chiefs signed 
veteran defensive end Carlos Dunlap to a one-year, eight-million dollar 
deal.

The team confirmed the signing later Thursday afternoon. 
Defensive tackle Chris Jones says he had the chance to get to know 
Dunlap this offseason.

"He's a high character guys," Jones said of
 Dunlap. "I trained with him this offseason in Miami. If we're able to 
add him and the report is true, I accept Carlos with open arms. I think 
he's a veteran guy who's had a lot of experience in this league. To have
 a veteran guy like that in this position group I think would be 
remarkable."

Dunlap played over 10 seasons in Cincinnati and was 
signed by Seattle halfway through 2020. He played in all 17 games for 
the Seahawks last year, recording 8.5 sacks and defending seven passes. 
The Chiefs are looking for depth at defensive end after Melvin Ingram 
signed a deal with the Dolphins in the offseason.

The Chiefs also drafted defensive end George Karlaftis in the first round this year at the No. 30 pick overall.

Karlaftis,
 who's been getting reps with the first-team defense and has been seen 
talking with Frank Clark after practice, has impressed defensive 
coordinator Steve Spagnuolo so far. Keeping in mind, the pads haven't 
gone on yet.

"Every young guy who comes in, even though they may 
have dominated at the college level, there is a little bit of a learning
 curve," Spagnuolo said. "We're going to live with some ups and downs 
with the young guys...but I'm fired up to see what (George) does."

In
 the secondary, the Chiefs seek new leadership in their defensive 
backfield with the departure of Tyrann Mathieu. So far, the young stars 
have shown out there. First-year Chief and safety Justin Reid has 
impressed early, but safety and fourth-year pro Juan Thornhill is taking
 on that leadership role, Spagnuolo says.

"From a communications 
standpoint and running the show, he's kind of taken that upon himself, 
which is Juan should be doing in his fourth year. As Justin gets more 
comfortable with the system, I would expect him to do the same thing."

Rookie
 safety Bryan Cook out of Cincinnati got reps with the first team 
defense Thursday after Justin Reid missed a few series. Reid is healthy 
and will be back on the field. Another rookie, corner Joshua Williams 
from Fayetteville State, has also caught people’s attention early in 
camp.

session. Marquez Valdes-Scantling also had some nice grabs during

Chiefs in good health through Thursday; Dunlap signs

Junction City held off a ninth inning rally by the Midwest A's to win the final game of the Cowdin Cup championship series 1-0 at Rathert Field and clinch the Mid Plains League title.

Midwest had runners at second and third with two outs in the top of the ninth inning but Brigade relief pitcher Jackson Hill struck out Brevon Lee to get the third out and close out the victory. With that win before more than 400 fans at Rathert Field, Junction City came back from a one-oh deficit in the series to win it two games to one.

This is the sixth Mid Plains League title for the Brigade in their 10-year history.

The Wuerffel Trophy is named after Danny Wuerffel, the 1996 Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback, and honors college football players who serve others, celebrate their positive impact on society and inspire greater service in the world.

Howard’s mention on the list is the eighth-straight season a Wildcat has been up for the award since its inaugural season of 2015. Fellow quarterback Skylar Thompson was a candidate for the award the last two seasons, while Denzel Goolsby (2019), Dalton Risner (2017-18) and Dante Barnett (2015-16) were also up for the award. Risner was a finalist for the honor in 2018.

K-State’s Howard Named Candidate for Wuerffel Trophy

Rathert Field will be the site for the final game of the Cowdin Cup playoffs Thursday at 7 p.m. The Junction City Brigade will host the Midwest A's with their best two-out-of-three championship series tied at one-win apiece.

Midwest defeated Junction City 8-5 in game one in a contest that had been started in Junction City Tuesday night but was suspended in the 8th inning due to rain. The remainder of the game was played in Kansas City, Missouri Wednesday night. Then there was a full nine-inning contest won by the Brigade 5-4. With the A's having the potential tying run at third&nbsp; base, Junction City pitcher Boston Dowd struck out P.J. Alvarez for the final out in the ninth inning to clinch the win for the Brigade.

Junction City General Manager Cecil Aska is hoping for a big crowd at Rathert Field Thursday evening. "I would love it if we could get a thousand, but I would be happy if five or six hundred people show up. It's going to be a good game. I think it's going to be a great atmosphere."

Aska said admission prices for the ballgame will be reduced to $3 for adults and $1 for children. Kids 5 and under will be admitted free.

Brigade and A's will resume the championship series

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. — It was a warm, 
muggy Wednesday morning on the Mosaic Training Fields at Missouri 
Western in St. Joseph for the first day of Chiefs training camp.&nbsp; 
Overall, coach Andy Reid was pleased with the intensity on day one.

"I
 like the competition between the offense and the defense," Reid said. 
"Offense won a few, defense won a few. They were competing. It's the 
first day, we'll keep rolling, but I was happy with the attitude and the
 work they put in."

 Running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire 
was on the field and active Wednesday - one day after being placed on 
the physically unable to perform list.

Elsewhere, defensive end Frank Clark came onto the field about 
halfway through practice around 10 a.m. He missed the early portion due 
to illness.

Wednesday's workout was in half pads and was 
relatively short - about an hour and a half.&nbsp;One of the standouts was, 
not surprisingly, receiver Juju Smith-Schuster, who was signed by Kansas
 City in March after five fruitful years with the Steelers.

Smith-Schuster
 had several nice snags throughout the day, including a wide open deep 
ball that was a bit overthrown. He made a diving catch on that route, 
which drew some applause.

The first thing that stood out to Smith-Schuster Wednesday was the heat, but also the fans.

"It
 was hot today," he said. "I'll tell y'all that, man. It's hot. They 
always told me, 'Be ready, be ready. Camp is no joke.' They were right! 
To see the fans out here in the heat, and the support, that's so much 
love."

&nbsp;On the field, Reid says he notices a trust developing between Smith-Schuster and quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

"This
 isn't Juju's first rodeo," the head coach said.&nbsp; "We liked what we saw 
before. He was banged up just a little bit, but he's back now and 
healthy. It was good work today."

Smith-Schuster played only five games for Pittsburgh in 2021 after suffering a shoulder injury last October.

Another
 standout Wednesday was safety Justin Reid - a fifth-year pro who signed
 with the Chiefs in March. He had a couple of solid pass breakups and 
intercepted Mahomes in the endzone during seven-on-seven drills.

"(Defensive
 coordinator Steve Spagnuolo) tells us what to do, we go out and execute
 it," Justin said. "When you do that, you buy into the program. You be a
 good teammate. You be a good student of the game. Good things usually 
happen, so I try and keep myself humble. Plays like that happen when you
 have your opportunity. You just have to catch it."

Coach Reid had
 praise for all of the young secondary players, including rookie corner 
Joshua Williams - drafted in the fourth round from Division II 
Fayetteville State.

"The young secondary players did a nice job 
today," Reid commented. "I thought they got in there and competed. I 
liked that. The catches that were made (by receivers) were contested. 
You had bodies next to bodies."

Justin Reid is one of the more 
veteran defensive backs the Chiefs have. Corner Dicaprio Bootle is a 
first-year pro, L'Jarius Sneed is in his third year, safety Juan 
Thornhill is in his fourth season and rookie corner Trent McDuffie got 
reps with the first team defense.

While Justin is a newcomer to the Chiefs, the veteran safety is impressed with the personnel he's surrounded by.

"The
 young guys have been doing a great job, taking it in stride," he said. 
"Listening to the older guys. Being learners and not being combative. 
Being open to coaching. They've been coming along well. We've put a lot 
on their plate, and they're up to the challenge."

Left
 tackle Orlando Brown, Jr. was not present at camp, as he and the Chiefs
 continue to try and reach a long-term deal.&nbsp; The latest reports 
indicate they are not close to reaching that deal.

Right guard 
Trey Smith was asked about Brown, Jr. after practice Wednesday. Smith 
called him "a good friend" and says they talk often, but would not 
speculate on whether or not Brown Jr. will play this fall.

"They're going to make the right decision," Smith said of general manager Brett Veach and team leadership.

Also
 absent Wednesday were those players previously placed on the PUP list. 
Corner Rashad Fenton is recovering from shoulder surgery, offensive 
tackle Lucas Niang is recovering from a knee injury, while receiver 
Justyn Ross recovers from a foot injury.&nbsp;

Defensive tackle Cortez Broughton is also on the PUP list.

The Chiefs practice again on Thursday morning at 9:15. That'll be the first practice open to the general public.

 had several nice snags throughout the day, including a wide open deep 
ball that was a bit overthrown. He made a diving catch on that route, 
which drew some applause.The first thing that stood out to Smith-Schuster Wednesday was the heat, but also the fans."It
 was hot today," he said. "I'll tell y'all that, man. It's hot. They 
always told me, 'Be ready, be ready. Camp is no joke.' They were right! 
To see the fans out here in the heat, and the support, that's so much 
love."&nbsp;On the field, Reid says he notices a trust developing between Smith-Schuster and quarterback Patrick Mahomes."This
 isn't Juju's first rodeo," the head coach said.&nbsp; "We liked what we saw 
before. He was banged up just a little bit, but he's back now and 
healthy. It was good work today."Smith-Schuster played only five games for Pittsburgh in 2021 after suffering a shoulder injury last October.Another
 standout Wednesday was safety Justin Reid - a fifth-year pro who signed
 with the Chiefs in March. He had a couple of solid pass breakups and 
intercepted Mahomes in the endzone during seven-on-seven drills."(Defensive
 coordinator Steve Spagnuolo) tells us what to do, we go out and execute
 it," Justin said. "When you do that, you buy into the program. You be a
 good teammate. You be a good student of the game. Good things usually 
happen, so I try and keep myself humble. Plays like that happen when you
 have your opportunity. You just have to catch it."Coach Reid had
 praise for all of the young secondary players, including rookie corner 
Joshua Williams - drafted in the fourth round from Division II

today," Reid commented. "I thought they got in there and competed. I 
liked that. The catches that were made (by receivers) were contested. 
You had bodies next to bodies."Justin Reid is one of the more 
veteran defensive backs the Chiefs have. Corner Dicaprio Bootle is a 
first-year pro, L'Jarius Sneed is in his third year, safety Juan 
Thornhill is in his fourth season and rookie corner Trent McDuffie got 
reps with the first team defense.While Justin is a newcomer to the Chiefs, the veteran safety is impressed with the personnel he's surrounded by."The
 young guys have been doing a great job, taking it in stride," he said. 
"Listening to the older guys. Being learners and not being combative. 
Being open to coaching. They've been coming along well. We've put a lot 
on their plate, and they're up to the challenge."Orlando Brown, Jr.Left
 tackle Orlando Brown, Jr. was not present at camp, as he and the Chiefs
 continue to try and reach a long-term deal.&nbsp; The latest reports 
indicate they are not close to reaching that deal.Right guard 
Trey Smith was asked about Brown, Jr. after practice Wednesday. Smith 
called him "a good friend" and says they talk often, but would not 
speculate on whether or not Brown Jr. will play this fall."They're going to make the right decision," Smith said of general manager Brett Veach and team leadership.Also
 absent Wednesday were those players previously placed on the PUP list. 
Corner Rashad Fenton is recovering from shoulder surgery, offensive 
tackle Lucas Niang is recovering from a knee injury, while receiver 
Justyn Ross recovers from a foot injury.&nbsp;Defensive tackle Cortez Broughton is also on the PUP list.The Chiefs practice again on Thursday morning at 9:15. That'll be the first practice open to the general public.
