KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Henri Veesaar and KJ Lewis scored 19 points apiece and Arizona pulled away late to beat Kansas 88-77 in a Big 12 Conference Tournament quarterfinal at T-Mobile Center on Thursday night.

Veesaar came off the bench to sink 7 of 11 shots with two 3-pointers for the third-seeded Wildcats (21-11), who move on to play second-seeded and ninth-ranked Texas Tech in a Friday semifinal. No. 1 seed Houston plays No. 4 seed BYU in the other semifinal.

John Feinstein was a full-time reporter for The Washington Post from 1977 to 1991, a commentator for outlets such as ESPN and the Golf Channel and a voter for more than 20 years in the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/ap-top-25-college-basketball-poll">AP Top 25</a>&nbsp;men's college basketball poll. Feinstein was comfortable writing about an array of sports, including golf and tennis, but he was known most for his connection to college basketball because of “A Season on the Brink.” He took a leave of absence from the Post in 1985 to embed with Knight's Indiana team, and the book highlighted the author's flair for the dramatic and ability to capture his subjects' personalities.

Knight's reputation for having a hot temper was well-established by then, and Feinstein brought it to life. Feinstein also effectively portrayed the personal relationships Knight had with his players, which alternated between warm and abusive.

Feinstein went on to write more than 40 books, including “A Good Walk Spoiled” (1995), about professional golf, and “A Civil War” (1996), about the Army-Navy football game. After that book's publication, he worked for many years as a radio commentator for Navy football.

“The Ancient Eight,” about Ivy League football, was published last year. Feinstein also wrote sports novels aimed at younger readers.

In addition to Robert, John Feinstein is survived by his wife, Christine, daughters Brigid and Jayne, and son Danny, as well as a sister, Margaret.

AJ Storr scored a season-high 19 points before fouling out in the closing seconds of OT, and KJ Adams had 15 points and seven boards for the Jayhawks (21-11), who narrowly avoided dropping their conference tourney opener for a second straight year.

Instead, they will face third-seeded Arizona on Thursday night in a rematch of a game Kansas won last weekend.

Jordan Ivy-Curry pulled UCF to within 94-93 when he converted a three-point play with 18.2 seconds to go, and Mayo missed the second of two foul shots at the other end. But UCF big man Moustapha Thiam came up short on a jumper with a chance to tie the game, Kansas got the rebound and Dickinson made the second of two free throws with 2.4 seconds remaining.

The Knights' Deebo Coleman was quickly fouled. He made the first foul shot with 0.9 seconds left to make it 96-94, but when he tried to intentionally miss the second to give his team a chance, Coleman failed to hit the rim and the Jayhawks got possession.

The Wildcats shot just 37.7% from the field and 9.5% from 3-point range.

Iowa State: The Cyclones remembered the first meeting between the two teams, when they jumped out to an early lead only to see the Wildcats take an 80-61 win, snapping the Cyclones' 29-game home winning streak. The Cyclones led by 11 early in the first half and never allowed the Wildcats back in the game.

Kansas State: The Wildcats need to find consistency to even have a chance at postseason play.

Kansas State closed the first half on an 8-0 run to trim the halftime deficit to 34-26. But the Wildcats couldn't carry the momentum into the second half. After K-State got within 6 points, the Cyclones went on an 11-0 run to grab their largest lead to that point in the game.

K-State’s Game at Arizona Moved to September 12

CINCINNATI (AP) — David N'Guessan had 18 points and 10 rebounds, Dug McDaniel added 13 points, and Kansas State defeated Cincinnati 54-49 on Wednesday night.

N'Guessan scored eight points and McDaniel scored six in a key stretch of the second half in which K-State (15-15, 9-10 Big 12) outscored Cincinnati 14-8 to build a seven-point lead. The run culminated in a layup and a jumper by N'Guessan and a jumper from McDaniel to give the Wildcats a 52-45 lead with four minutes remaining.

The Wildcats cooled off and their next four possessions resulted in a turnover and three missed shots while two baskets by Jizzle James got Cincinnati within 52-49.

Kansas State finally scored again when Brendan Hausen made two free throws for a 54-49 lead with 22 seconds left. Cincinnati missed a 3-pointer, N'Guessan missed the front end of the bonus, and Cincinnati missed another 3-pointer as time ran out.

Cincinnati led by seven with 14 1/2 minutes left in the second half before Kansas State’s 8-0 run gave the Wildcats a 36-35 lead with 12 minutes remaining, their first lead since 4-2.

Day Day Thomas had 12 points and James 10 for Cincinnati (17-13, 7-12).

Kansas State has won back-to-back games for the first time since Feb. 8 and 11.

With one game left in the regular season, Kansas State is tied with West Virginia and TCU for eighth place. Cincinnati and UCF are tied for 12th.

Tuesday night was the opening night of sub-state semifinal basketball, and the six-seed Junction City Blue Jays hosted the 11-seed Manhattan High Indians in Junction City. 

The Manhattan High Indians snagged an early 5-1 lead over the Blue Jays as both teams struggled on the offensive end in the first quarter. Junction City's shots began to fall, and JC led 10-9 after the first quarter. 

The second quarter featured more points and better offense from both sides, but the Blue Jays led by eight, 27-19, at halftime. 

In the second half, the Indians never could get within six points, as every time Manhattan scored, the Blue Jays had a response. To end the third quarter, Junction City senior Jackson Austin was fouled on a half-court heave. Austin made all three free throws, and JC led 41-29. 

In the fourth quarter, Junction City pulled away and led by as many as 17 points. The Blue Jays held on and won 59-45 to beat Manhattan for the third time this season. 

Junction City was led in scoring by senior Larkin Turner, who scored a career-high 28 points in his last home game. 

For Manhattan, the Indians were led in scoring by senior Landon Knopp with 11 points. 

The Indians end their season with a 6-15 record. For Junction City, the Blue Jays will play three-seed Washburn Rural in Topeka on Friday night. The winner of the sub-state final will advance to the 6A State tournament in Wichita.

Kansas State led by 11 points at halftime, then N'Guessan had five points in a 7-0 run that gave the Wildcats a 46-29 lead with 14 minutes remaining in the game. The Wildcats led by double digits for most of the remainder. Colorado got within eight points once and later the score was 63-54 after Sebastian Rancik hit two free throws for the Buffaloes with a minute to go.

Macaleab Rich made two free throws for K-State with 48 seconds left and Rancik's dunk with six seconds remaining finished off the scoring.

There was one tie, no lead changes, and Kansas State led for 38 1/2 minutes.

Colorado (11-18, 2-16 Big 12) got 11 points from RJ Smith and 10 each from Rancik and Bangot Dak.

WASHINGTON (AP)—President Donald Trump says he plans to issue “a complete PARDON of Pete Rose," baseball’s late career hits leader who was&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/general-news-8fb1c12e1498a0c3ffacef4beaa4e642">banned from MLB and the Hall of Fame</a>&nbsp;for sports betting.

Trump posted on Truth Social on Friday night to say Rose, who&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/pete-rose-obituary-reds-e0f3dfa057fc46629447e04b6540e4c8">died in September</a>&nbsp;at 83, “shouldn’t have been gambling on baseball, but only bet on HIS TEAM WINNING.”

Trump did not specifically mention Rose’s tax evasion case in which Rose pleaded guilty in 1990 and served a five-month prison sentence.

The president said he would sign a pardon for Rose “over the next few weeks.”

MLB handed Rose a lifetime ban in 1989 after an investigation determined he had bet on baseball games, including some involving his own Cincinnati Reds.

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — Keyshawn Hall scored 26 points and Darius Garland scored 23 points and UCF held on to beat Kansas State 80-76 on Wednesday night.

Moustapha Thaim just missed the most rare of triple-doubles scoring 11 points, grabbing 10 rebounds and blocking eight shots. It was the second straight win for the Knights (15-13, 6-11 Big 12) following a seven-game losing streak.

Max Jones scored 22 points, reserve C.J. Jones scored 12 points, Brendan Hausen 11 and Dug McDaniel 10 for Kansas State (13-15, 7-10). The Wildcats now have lost four straight following a six-game win streak.

Hausen made a deep 3-pointer and then was fouled getting poked in the eye by UCF's Mikey Williams with 14 seconds to go. Hausen made the free throw to reduce the the Wildcats' deficit to 78-76. Hall sealed it with a pair of free throws with 11 seconds remaining. Hausen missed a deep 3 attempt on Kansas State's next possession.

Benny Williams' layup with 5:48 remaining put the Knights ahead 69-58 before the Wildcats countered with a 7-0 run over the next 1:30 to draw within 69-65.

UCF led for most of the first half until McDaniel's layup gave the Wildcats a 29-28 lead with 5:51 before halftime. UCF closed the first half with a 10-0 run and led 41-34.

The Wildcats host Colorado on Sunday. UCF travels to TCU on Saturday.

Nate Kaczor&nbsp;is now the program’s special teams coordinator and special assistant to the head coach,&nbsp;Matt Kardulis&nbsp;is the assistant safeties coach,&nbsp;Sean Maguire&nbsp;is the assistant quarterbacks coach and&nbsp;David Orloff&nbsp;is the outside linebackers coach.

“Each of these coaches provides tremendous value to our staff, and we have been fortunate to add a secondary assistant at numerous positions,” Klieman said. “They provide great support not only on the field, but they serve important functions in recruiting as well.”

Kaczor is in his second season at K-State after serving the 2024 campaign as the special teams quality control coach. A 16-year NFL veteran, Kaczor (pronounced KAT-sir) helped K-State players earn top-50 national rankings in five categories as&nbsp;Dylan Edwards&nbsp;ranked fourth nationally in punt return touchdowns (1), 35th in combined kickoff return and punt return yards (438) and ranked 43rd in kickoff return average (19.9 yards), while&nbsp;kicker&nbsp;Chris Tennant ranked 41st in field goals per game (1.31) and field goal percentage (81.0%).

Maguire finishes off an offensive assistant staff that also includes&nbsp;Drew Liddle, who was named the assistant offensive line coach on February 13. Maguire finished his first year at K-State in 2024 as an offensive analyst, helping the Wildcats in the top 15 nationally in four offensive categories and rank in the top 10 in school history in 15 game or season categories, while he assisted in the guidance of&nbsp;Avery Johnson, who set the school record with 25 touchdown passes a year ago. A native of Sparta, New Jersey, who is a former quarterback at Florida State, Maguire came to K-State after working one season at Buffalo and four seasons at Texas A&amp;M.

Kardulis and Orloff each enter their fifth seasons at K-State in 2025 after serving the previous four years as a defensive quality control coach and defensive analyst, respectively. Both have helped K-State average 21.8 points allowed per game over the last four seasons – a span of 53 games – to rank 24th nationally, 17th among Power 4 teams and third among current Big 12 teams. Additionally, the Wildcats have forced a combined 62 turnovers the last three seasons to rank first among current Big 12 schools.

A native of Burnsville, North Carolina, Kardulis came to Manhattan after spending the previous two seasons on staff at Virginia Tech as a defensive graduate assistant. Prior to his stint in Blacksburg, he spent one year apiece as a defensive quality control coach at Campbell, video coordinator and running backs coach at Emory &amp; Henry College, and defensive graduate assistant at Frostburg State. He played defensive back for five years at Emory &amp; Henry College.

Orloff, who hails from Laguna Niguel, California, came to Kansas State after working the previous three seasons at Syracuse as a graduate assistant working with the linebackers, while he later was a quality control coach for the Orange. He spent the previous three seasons as a defensive and special teams graduate assistant at UNLV. Orloff earned his undergraduate degree from San Jose State as he was an offensive undergraduate assistant for the Spartans for five seasons.

BOULDER, Colo. (AP) — Hunter Dickinson scored a season-high 32 points and grabbed 13 rebounds to help Kansas defeat Colorado 71-64 on Monday night.

Dickinson made 13 of 18 shots and 6 of 10 free throws for the Jayhawks (19-9, 10-7 Big 12 Conference), who fell out of the AP Top 25 for the first time since Feb. 8, 2021, after losing three of five before arriving in Boulder. It was the 12th double-double this season for Dickinson.

KJ Adams had 15 points for Kansas and Rylan Griffen scored 10.

Bangot Dak had 16 points on 7-for-10 shooting to lead the Buffaloes (11-17, 2-15), who had won two of three following a 13-game losing streak. Julian Hammond III scored 11.

Kansas only trailed in the game for 20 seconds, but the Buffaloes wouldn't go away.

Dickinson had 15 points by halftime to help the Jayhawks take a 37-32 lead.

Colorado took its only lead when Hammond scored in the paint to make it 39-38 with 15:39 remaining. Dickinson answered with a jumper and a three-point play and Kansas never trailed again. The Buffaloes managed to even the score twice and trailed 62-60 after Hammond nailed a 3-pointer with 4:12 left. They would get no closer.

The Jayhawks move a half-game behind 25th-ranked BYU for fifth place in the conference with three games left in the regular season.

Kansas has won three in a row and 22 of the last 23 matchups with the Buffaloes and leads the all-time series 126-40.
