Ralph Joseph Ponte, 71, of McFarland, Kansas, passed away on Friday (October 7, 2022) at his home.

He was born in Topeka on July 4, 1951 to Nina Burch McKinley and Ralph McKinley.&nbsp; At a young age he was adopted and raised by Mary Burch and Patrick Ponte on a farm 4.5 miles east of Hoyt, Kansas.&nbsp; He graduated from Hoyt High School and served in the United States Army.

Ralph was employed with Santa Fe Railroad from 1973 to 1993, then started R.J. Ponte Construction specializing in building Custom Homes. He retired in 2018. Ralph was an exceptional craftsman and continued his love of woodworking as a hobby.

Ralph was active with the McFarland PRIDE volunteer group, Relay for Life and with CASA in Topeka. He enjoyed attending race car events, hunting and fishing on the farmland, and fishing yearly in Canada with close friends. He cherished road trips for work and pleasure, Jeep rides, visiting new places, and attending concerts with the love of his life. He was always sure to make the most of every experience and return with stories to tell. He was a great storyteller and found joy in sharing with others. Ralph had a way of making every person in the room feel important. He genuinely loved people, leaving a lasting impression on those he met.

He was a very proud father and grandfather who loved watching his grandchildren play sports and attending all their events. Time spent with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren was the highlight of his life.

Ralph was preceded in death by a twin brother at birth, his parents, a younger brother Thomas Ponte and two older sisters Edie Adams and Georgia Bonneson.

He was united in marriage to Sandra Barngrover on August 18, 1972. They were later divorced.&nbsp; On February 14, 1991 Ralph married Bernita Mongold Tryon.&nbsp; She was killed in a tragic auto accident on September 9, 1998.&nbsp; On August 3, 2002 Ralph was united in marriage to Marilyn Meseke Gasperich at his home in Auburn, Kansas.&nbsp; She survives at their home in McFarland, Kansas.

Ralph is also survived by his children Teresa Ponte (Al), Meriden, Amy Ponte, Topeka, August Wessel (Andrew), Minot, North Dakota, Dustin Gasperich (Jen), Topeka, Krista Hurla (Chad), Paxico, Rachel Sisson, (Jared), Berryton, Lindsay Falk (Josh), Alma, one brother Nick Nicolay (Lisa), Nebraska City, Nebraska, thirteen (13) grandchildren Ellen Doty, Devin Ponte, Brandon Gasperich (Marisa), Mackenzie &nbsp;Johanek (Tucker), Jordyn and Jayde Berroth, Easton Sisson, Peyton, Katelyn, Brady and Cole Hurla, Haidyn and Mason Falk, and two (2) great-grandchildren Oaklee and Bodhi Gasperich.

Funeral services will be held on Friday (October 14, 2022) at 10:30 a.m. at the Alma United Methodist Church with Pastor Kyle Scheideman officiating.&nbsp; Burial with Military Honors will in the McFarland City Cemetery.

Ralph will lie in state Thursday at 5:00 p.m. at the Campanella &amp; Stewart Funeral Home in Alma. The family will meet with friends Thursday evening from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home in Alma.

Ralph Joseph Ponte

Leo Dickinson, 88, of St. Marys, Kansas, passed away on Thursday (October 6, 2022) at Midland Hospice in Topeka, Kansas.

Born May 14, 1934, in Pleasant Plains, Iowa, Leo was the son of Virgil Henry and Thelma Maxine (Tucker) Dickinson. He married Barbara Lee Axtell on October 4, 1958, in Colona, Illinois. She preceded him in death on April 28, 2007.

Leo served his country in the U. S. Marine Corps from 1957 – 1959. He had been a member of the St. George American Legion Post.

He was an active loved and well-respected member of the YLISSB System Amateur Radio Network. He operated as a Net Control operator several times a week.&nbsp; He was also an avid outdoorsman, his passion was Duck Hunting, but he also enjoyed upland game bird hunting as well as fishing.

Leo was employed for over 35 years at Balderson’s Manufacturing in Wamego until his retirement. He also owned and operated Leo’s Taxidermy in St. George for many years.

Survivors include two sons, Billy Lee Dickinson (Deborah) of Wamego and Gerry Leon Dickinson (Angela) of Wamego; a daughter, Janey Marie DeVries of Nixa, MO; six grandchildren, Claire Mundell of Williams, OR, Matthew Mundell of Lawrence, KS, Nathan Dickinson of Wamego, Kasey Coon (Tim) of Wamego, Amelia Delay of Wamego and Hollis Berry of Kansas City, MO; three great grandchildren, Aiden Delay, Addilyn Delay and Naomi Coon all of Wamego; a brother, Louie Dickinson (Dottie) of Davenport, IA; and several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Dickinson was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Barbara; a son in law, Steve DeVries; and three brothers, James Leonard Dickinson, Thomas “Tom” Dickinson and Larry Dickinson.

Leo Dickinson

With his fishing pole and bait bucket in one hand and his rifle in 
the other, Bruce Schmitt was called to that great fishing and hunting 
compound in the sky.

Bruce Edward Schmitt, 69, of Onaga, Kansas, passed away on 
Wednesday, October 5, 2022, at the Onaga Health &amp; Rehab Facility 
with his family by his side.

Born February 18, 1953, in in Summit, New Jersey, Bruce was the son
 of Alfred and Ruth (Bock) Schmitt. He grew up in Kenilworth, N.J. and 
graduated from David Brearley High School.&nbsp; He attended a night school 
program for welding at the Manhattan Vo-Tech School.

Bruce married Julie Berges on June 12, 1976 in Onaga, KS.&nbsp; They 
moved to Roselle Park, N. J. for one year and moved back to Onaga where 
they lived on the family farm.

Bruce was a welder. He worked for three years at Frankfort 
Fabrication and later for Dale Luttig in Emmett, KS for 10 years. When 
Dale decided to retire, Bruce went to work at Dymax as a steel cutter 
for 18 years until his health forced him to retire.

Bruce was a member of the Congregational United Church in Onaga, 
Wamego Masonic Lodge No. 75 AF&amp;AM, Kenilworth Jaycees and the Onaga 
Jaycees.&nbsp; He received his JCI Senatorship in May, 1992.&nbsp; Bruce also 
helped with the 4-H Shooting Sports and was a Hunter Education 
Instructor for many years.&nbsp; He was an avid hunter and fisherman and 
loved spending time with his children and grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife of 46 years, Julie; two daughters, Keri
 Zenger and her husband, Chad and Rebecca Mayginnes and her husband, 
Zac; eight grandchildren, Trenton Ross and his fiance’,Cassie Punchard, 
Glennys “Rudy” Ross, Avery Zenger, Kylie Zenger, Will Zenger, Kylar 
Schmitt, Morgan Mayginnes and Rilyn Maginnes all of Onaga, KS; a 
brother, Gary Schmitt and his wife, Carolyn of Union, N.J.; a brother in
 law, Reen Berges and his wife, Sandy of Great Bend, KS; and many other 
loving family members and friends who will greatly miss him.

Bruce was preceded in death by his parents, Alfred and Ruth Schmitt.

Bruce’s wish was to be cremated.&nbsp; A Memorial service will be held 
on Thursday (October 13, 2022) at 3:00 p.m. at the Onaga Congregational 
United Church with Pastor Ron Stair officiating.

The family will meet with friends on Thursday afternoon from 2:00 
until the time of services and following the service at a reception in 
the fellowship hall.

Bruce Edward Schmitt

Joyce Ilene Fleming, 66, of St. George, Kansas, passed away on Saturday (October 1, 2022) at Via Christi Hospital in Manhattan.

Born December 7, 1955 in Marysville, Kansas, Joyce was the daughter of Orville James and Ila Marie (Fletcher) Thomas.&nbsp; She married Larry Fleming on May 17, 2007 in Westmoreland, Kansas.&nbsp; He survives.

Joyce was employed for Jani-King until her retirement.&nbsp; She had previously worked at Three Rivers, Inc. in Wamego and Wal-Mart in Manhattan.

An avid reader, Joyce also enjoyed coloring, watching Cardinals, collecting shot glasses and going to the lake with her family and friends.

Survivors include her husband, Larry; a daughter, Lindsay Thomas of Manhattan, KS; two sisters, Sheryll Michael of Kansas City, MO and Darlene Haller (Melvin) of Randolph, KS; three sisters in law, Janet Fox (Gene) of Largo, FL, Susan Fleming (Jerry Weems) of Kanopolis, KS and Joyce Mills (Steve) of Abilene, KS; many nieces and nephews; and her loving dog, Cooper.

Joyce was preceded in death by her parents.

Cremation arrangements are in the care of Campanella &amp; Stewart Funeral Home in Wamego.

The family will host a Celebration of Life on Saturday (October 15, 2022) from 11:00 until 2:00 at the St. George United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall, 303 Grant St., St. George, KS.

Joyce Ilene Fleming

Lavonne Kay Horchem, 91, died peacefully in her sleep on October 6, 
2022, at Meadowlark Senior Living in Manhattan, Kansas.&nbsp; She was born on
 September 20, 1931, at home in Utica, Kansas, the daughter of Ephriam 
“Pete” Gerald and Martha Matilda (Schwindt) Bernbeck.

She graduated from Utica High School and Kansas State University.

She married Richard “Dick” Gayle Horchem on August 16, 1953, in the 
First Christian Church in Utica.&nbsp; They made their home in Ness City, 
Kansas, where they raised their three sons.

Kay taught in the Ness City School District for many years. She was 
active in various community organizations and supported numerous 
charities over the years.

Kay is survived by two sons, Brad (Cindy) Horchem, Manhattan, Kansas,
 and Todd (Brenda) Horchem, Ness City; four grandchildren, Travis 
Horchem, Newton, Kansas; Megan (George) Heyns, Kansas City, Missouri; 
Kali (Mark) Solomon, Wichita, Kansas; and Jana Horchem, Englewood, 
Colorado; and five great-grandchildren, Aiyana, Adijah, and Ajani 
Solomon and Van and Vivian Horchem.

In addition, she is survived by two sisters, Elvira Kilroy, Nokomis, 
Florida and Wanda McKenzie, Gold Canyon, Arizona; one brother, Gary 
(Anita) Bernbeck, Grand Junction, Colorado; a sister-in-law, Linda 
(Terry) Claycamp, Hays, Kansas; and many nieces and nephews. Petros 
Levis joined the family as an exchange student from Greece during his 
senior year of high school. Petros and his wife, Ann, Denver, remain a 
part of the family.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a son, Craig Horchem, and two brothers, Don Bernbeck and Gerald Bernbeck.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be 
made to the Ness County Bank Building Foundation, St. Jude Children’s 
Research Hospital or any organization of the donor’s choice. Memorials

Lavonne Kay Horchem

Eldon Lorein Hoover was born on April 26, 1929, and passed away October 1, 2022, at Ascension Via Christi Village in Manhattan, Kansas. Eldon was the eighth of nine children born to David Breckbill Hoover and Susan Page Hoover on the family farm in rural Detroit, Kansas northeast of Abilene, Kansas. Eldon grew up in the Moonlight Community and attended the Moonlight Grade School. He graduated from DCCHS (Dickinson County Community High School, Chapman, Kansas) in 1947. On October 16, 1949, he married Nelda Marie Marts and to this union were born four children, Susan Marie, Sheryl Christine, Connie Jane and Steven Craig. &nbsp;As a youth, Eldon attended the Bethel Brethren in Christ Church north of Detroit, Kansas, and was a member of Sutphen Mill Christian Church, Chapman, Kansas. &nbsp;Eldon farmed northwest of Chapman, Kansas for 70 years and loved farming and tending the land. He always said he would farm until he was 90 years of age. He was able to plant, harvest and truck his last crop of wheat to Chapman Coop Elevator in 2016 at the age of 87. He said retirement for farmers was farming. During his farming career, Eldon served as a board member on several farming cooperatives. &nbsp;Eldon was preceded in death by his parents, his daughter Susan Marie Hoover, his brothers Paul Hoover, Dean Hoover, Dale Hoover and Robert Hoover, his sisters Irene Hoover, Miriam Nichols, Viola Boles and Doris Larson. Also preceding him in death were his sisters-in-law, Jean Hoover, Helen Hoover and Phyllis Hoover; his brothers-in-law Loren Nichols, George Boles and John Larson. 
Survivors include his wife of 72 years Nelda Hoover, his daughter Sheryl &amp; Dale Wilson, Manhattan, Kansas; his daughter Connie and George Poland, Junction City, Kansas; his son Steven and Debra Hoover,

Carolyn Sue Lindholm (Mandeville), 73 of Hamilton, MT was reunited with her loving husband on October 4, 2022.

Carol was born July 11, 1949, in Hutchinson, KS to Robert George 
Mandeville and Nancy Maxine Mandeville (Gough). She attended Nickerson 
High School.

On October 2, 1974, she married Michael Lindholm in Lindsborg, KS. 
They lived in Kansas until moving to the Bitterroot Valley in 1984, with
 their two sons Chad &amp; Jerry. Carol assisted her husband Mike with 
insurance sales. Selling insurance allowed them to travel together and 
meet many people along the way. Later in life she enjoyed retirement and
 spending time with family and friends.

Carol, to this day, holds the record for the largest whitetail buck 
shot by a woman with a bow in McPherson County Kansas. When Carol didn’t
 have a bow in her hand, you could find her and Mike on the golf course.
 Carol and Mike were an inseparable pair until his passing in 2008. The 
loss of her husband was extremely difficult for her. We all find comfort
 knowing that they are again reunited and doing the two step.

chapter. Moving forward without your guidance will be a challenge. We 
find much comfort in knowing that you and Pops are reunited again. I

Heaven has claimed the life of Joy C. Johnson of Manhattan, KS. She was 83 years old and died peacefully on October 4, 2022 at Meadowlark Hills. She fought a battle with cancer for thelast year. Joy was born on May 1, 1939 in Plainville, KS to Louis and Opal Hrabe. She was a graduate of&nbsp; Stockton High School, class of 1957. She moved to Manhattan, KS to attend ManhattanChristian College where she met the love of her life, Dennis Johnson. They were married on December 20, 1958. Dennis and Joy raised two children, Judy Jo (1960) and David Duane (1961). They spent their early married years in Abilene, KS where Dennis worked at KP&amp;L and Joy received a bachelor’s degree from Marymount College in Salina, KS. Joy taught social sciences at Abilene High School. They also managed the King Solomon Christian Camp near Solomon, KS while working their jobs in Abilene. Joy was well known for her excellent homemade food she prepared for the campers each summer. The Lord called them to move to Manhattan, KS and join the Manhattan Christian College family. They held several job positions depending on the needs of the College. After the high school graduations of their children from Manhattan High School, Dennis and Joy moved to the Johnson family farm south of Abilene, KS to take care of Grandpa Frank and the farm. During this time, Joy enjoyed raising a few horses and showing them with her daughter and grandchildren. She won several awards on the Eastern Kansas Horseman’s Association and made many friends. Faith and Family were a big part of Joy’s life. She cherished her personal relationship with her savior, Jesus Christ. She loved studying her Bible and preparing Bible lessons to share with others. She also loved playing the piano and organ for church services. Joy was a faithful member of the First Christian Church in Abilene and the University Christian Church in Manhattan. Joy was a loving, caring grandmother who was very generous. She loved spending as much time as she could with her grandchildren and her great granddaughters even as she was battling cancer during the past year. Joy is survived by her daughter, Judy Parsons and husband, Bob of Hugoton, KS; sons David Johnson and wife Keiko of Manhattan and Bill Watt and wife, Katherine of Junction City, KS; Grandchildren Eli Gantenbein, Salina; Levi Gantenbein and wife Katelyn, Manhattan; Claire Johnson, San Diego, CA and Donny Johnson, Manhattan. Great granddaughters Emma and Amelia Gantenbein, Manhattan. Her sisters Betty Raney of CA and Phyllis Hart of Plainville; and her brother, Debert Hrabe and wife Jeanne of Overland Park, KS. She will be missed by her many extended family members and friends. She is preceded in death by her husband, Dennis Johnson; her parents; her step father, Leo Bonneau; her brother Doyal Hrabe. Joy C. Johnson 

William George Winslow, age 87, died at Clay County Medical Center on October 1, 2022. He was born in Liberty, NE to Richard and Lydia (Caulkins) Winslow on November 6, 1934. William was a graduate of Barnston High School in Nebraska.

 He joined the United States Army in 1952 and completed basic training at Camp Roberts in California. William then completed aviation mechanic’s and qualified on the M-1 rifle as a marksman. He was assigned to various units, including 1905th, 811th&nbsp;aviation engineering battalions in California and Seoul Korea for 3 years as well as various other units in Germany in the 50’s through 1965. In 1965, he was assigned as a senior mechanic in Fort Hood, TX then as a section chief to the 809th&nbsp;Engineering Battalion. William deployed to Thailand for a year. He returned from deployment to Fort Leonard Wood as section chief and was then moved to Baumholder, Germany until 1969. William ended his active-duty career in 1970 after a seven-month deployment to Phu Bai, Vietnam. He earned four good conduct and campaign medals. William enlisted in the Kansas National Guard in 1971 where he earned a meritorious service medal. He exited his military career as a sergeant first class.

 During various points in his military career, William also attended some classes at Kansas State University, and received a diploma in Computer Repair from international correspondence school in Pennsylvania. He married Margaret Roberts on November 4, 1956. She preceded him in death on April 26, 2019. He completed 80 hours as an instructor for engine rebuild techniques at Salina Vo-tech after his time in the service. William worked for and retired from RSMS on Fort Riley. He also worked for CASA for a few years as well as various other jobs. William was a member of the Masons. 

Though sometimes viewed as a “Grumpy Old Man,” William had the biggest heart and would help anyone. He loved going to the hospital for breakfast in the morning and visiting, he never met a stranger. William also had a passion for genealogy, but most of all he loved his furry companions, Lily and Ginger.&nbsp; In addition to his wife, he is preceded in death by his parents and brother: Harold Winslow.

William George Winslow, age 87, died at Clay County Medical Center on October 1, 2022. He was born in Liberty, NE to Richard and Lydia (Caulkins) Winslow on November 6, 1934. William was a graduate of Barnston High School in Nebraska. He joined the United States Army in 1952 and completed basic training at Camp Roberts in California. William then completed aviation mechanic’s and qualified on the M-1 rifle as a marksman. He was assigned to various units, including 1905th, 811th&nbsp;aviation engineering battalions in California and Seoul Korea for 3 years as well as various other units in Germany in the 50’s through 1965. In 1965, he was assigned as a senior mechanic in Fort Hood, TX then as a section chief to the 809th&nbsp;Engineering Battalion. William deployed to Thailand for a year. He returned from deployment to Fort Leonard Wood as section chief and was then moved to Baumholder, Germany until 1969. William ended his active-duty career in 1970 after a seven-month deployment to Phu Bai, Vietnam. He earned four good conduct and campaign medals. William enlisted in the Kansas National Guard in 1971 where he earned a meritorious service medal. He exited his military career as a sergeant first class. Carey “Lee” Cunningham, 75 of Manchester passed away September 15, 2022 at Salina Regional Hospital. He was born July 18, 1947 in Johnstown, PA, the son of Charles and Viola (Ross) Cunningham. Linda Terese Gronquist, 72, of Alma, KS, passed away peacefully on, Friday, September 30, 2022, at Stormont Vail Hospital surrounded by her family.

Linda was born on April 8, 1950, in Kansas City, the daughter of Art and Sue Gillum Johnson. As a child she enjoyed childhood trips to Marquette, MI, a tradition she passed along to her own children during excursions to the island, wading in cold Lake Superior and enjoying pasties.

She attended Shawnee Mission North High School and Kansas State Teacher’s College, majoring in Education. She was a member of Delta Zeta sorority, serving as its Membership Chair and was thrilled when her granddaughter joined a sorority at ESU.

She was active in Girl Scouts as both a scout and a leader. Linda was also a gifted competitive dance roller skater, qualifying for both regional and national competitions and later teaching skating lessons.

She met her husband, David, on a blind date while in college. They married in 1972, enjoying trips to Hawaii, a cruise to Alaska for their 45th wedding anniversary, and a surprise party this past January to mark their 50th anniversary. He remains at their home in Alma along with their dog, Duo.

She worked for the State of Kansas for 36 years, starting as a Clerk Typist and advancing to a Procurement Officer IV, retiring in 2016. She belonged to the Kansas Association for Public Purchasing Professionals and was a Capital Representative for many years, serving as Membership Chair, Vice President, and President of the organization.

She was an active member of Peace United Church of Christ, serving on committees and the Consistory, including as President, and supporting White Memorial Camp.

Upon retirement, she enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren, including annual traditions of apple picking, pumpkin patch, summer vacations in Branson, Missouri, school programs, athletic events, and holiday baking – peanut brittle was her specialty! Those who were lucky enough to be on her Christmas card list looked forward to her letter with updates on the year’s happenings. She also enjoyed occasional trips to the casino, especially with her daughters, who were more fun than David, and took a trip to Las Vegas for her 40th wedding anniversary.

She leaves behind her husband, David, of Alma, KS and daughters, Julie Gronquist-Blodgett (Clifford) of Kansas City, Missouri, their children Izah, Jacob, Declan, Wally, and Emery, and Jessica Clark (Darius) of Overland Park, KS, their children Aaliyah and Jaeden, along with brother-in-law Paul Gronquist (Susan), and sister by a different mother, Sara Schubert, along with loving nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, sister Ginny, infant son, Anton, and brother-in-law, John.

Memorial services will be held at 11:00 am, Saturday, October 15, 2022, at Peace United Church of Christ in Alma, Kansas. Pastor Julia Gaughan will be officiating. The family will greet friends prior to the service beginning at 10:00 am. She was in her 71st year.&nbsp; Darlene was born to Orlin A. and Doris Irene (Kufahl) Falk on August 15th, 1951 in Westmoreland, KS.&nbsp; She was raised on a farm outside Wheaton, KS.&nbsp; She attended Wheaton schools until&nbsp;the end of 9th grade.&nbsp; In her youth she had many fond memories of her time in 4H.&nbsp;&nbsp;She graduated from Onaga High School in 1969.&nbsp; While in school, she enjoyed cheerleading and was named football homecoming queen her senior year.&nbsp; She married Steve Murray in January 1971 in Manhattan, KS.&nbsp; They have resided in Alma, KS since 1977.&nbsp;

She loved to attend Wabaunsee High School basketball games, there to support her husband, and kids while they played.&nbsp; She was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Alma, and was a member of the altar&nbsp;society.&nbsp; Darlene was loved by many.&nbsp; Her proudest accomplishment in life was her family.&nbsp; Whether&nbsp;it was sporting events, rodeo's or any number or life's events, she was their biggest supporter.&nbsp; She especially cherished her relationships with her grandchildren.&nbsp; They were her world.&nbsp;

&nbsp;Darlene worked for the Wabaunsee County Extension Office and for most of her Career for the State of Kansas in SRS and Estate Recovery.

Marie “Mia” Elaina Ines, 54, of St. George, Kansas, passed away peacefully after a courageous battle with Leiomyosarcoma cancer at her home on October 1, 2022.

Born October 2, 1968, in Fort Madison, Iowa, Marie was the daughter of Ernesto and Beverly (Mehl) Ines.

Mia bequeathed her body for scientific research due to the extreme rareness of her cancer. Leiomyosarcoma (LMS) accounts for less than 1% of all known cancers. Although her courageous battle with cancer has ended, we hope her request to have her body bequeathed for research will help others suffering from this rare form of cancer.

A memorial service will be announced at a later date.

Patricia Anne Pierce, daughter of Henry F. (III) and Edith L. (Campbell) Pierce was born on April 2, 1946, in Kansas City, MO. Her death occurred Sept. 19, 2022, at Meadowbrook Rehabilitation Hospital, Gardner at the age of 76. 

Patricia lived her early life in Hays, KS. On Nov. 18, 1964, she was united in marriage to Henry Mason Sellers at Hays. This union was blessed with three children: Margaret, Christine and Katherine. Patricia occupied her life with the many activities of a homemaker, housewife, mother and grandmother. She made a family home in several communities in Kansas while traveling with her family until 1987 when Henry and Patricia moved to Manhattan, KS, until 2002 when Patricia moved to Russell, KS and then 2019 when she moved to Gardner, KS to live out her life.&nbsp;

She enjoyed playing the piano for her children and grandchildren and having holidays with family. She also enjoyed researching family genealogy and creating a variety of food dishes. She played the piano for musical productions in Singapore and Manhattan, KS. She was a member of the Episcopal Church.&nbsp;

Those who preceded her in death were parents, Henry F. (III) and (Edith) Lorraine Pierce and two great-granddaughters, Meredith and Macy. Survivors are Henry Sellers of Russell, KS, daughters: Margaret Sellers of Kansas City, MO, Christine Sellers and Katherine Sellers of Russell, KS. Also surviving are her granddaughters: Angela (Miller) Meyer and husband, Patrick of Adrian, MO, Jamie Crawford of St. John, KS, Randi Steinle of Yukon, OK, and Chandler (Reich) Sellens and husband, Jacob Sellens of Russell, KS, Great-grandchildren: Edwin, Porter, Veda, Reese and Adler. Meda L. Hane, 93, of Junction City, passed away on September 27, 2022 at Valley View Senior Life Center. Cremation will take place. Visitation will be held at Johnson Funeral Home on Tuesday, October 4 , 2022, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. A funeral service will take place at 11:00 a.m. directly after the visitation. She was born on October 31, 1928, in Junction City, Kansas to John and Lottie (Eggleston) Estes. She was the youngest of five siblings. On October 18, 1958, she married William Hane in Gardena, CA. In 1964, they moved back to Junction City, KS, and raised their family. They had three kids; Linda, Kenneth, and William. She was a dedicated and hard working stay at home mother for her family. From 2000 to 2018, she worked in Sheridan Elementary School's cafeteria. She enjoyed being around the kids and considered all of the kids as her extended family. Meda is survived by her loving her daughter, Linda (Alan) Kidd of Junction City, KS; two sons, Kenneth (Tammy) Hane of Leavenworth County, KS, and William (Sean Kidd) Hane of Louisville, KY; grandson, Alex Kidd of Junction City, KS; and a host of nieces, nephews, and extended family. She was born on October 31, 1928, in Junction City, Kansas to John and Lottie (Eggleston) Estes. She was the youngest of five siblings. On October 18, 1958, she married William Hane in Gardena, CA. In 1964, they moved back to Junction City, KS, and raised their family. They had three kids; Linda, Kenneth, and William. She was a dedicated and hard working stay at home mother for her family. From 2000 to 2018, she worked in Sheridan Elementary School's cafeteria. She enjoyed being around the kids and considered all of the kids as her extended family. Meda is survived by her loving her daughter, Linda (Alan) Kidd of Junction City, KS; two sons, Kenneth (Tammy) Hane of Leavenworth County, KS, and William (Sean Kidd) Hane of Louisville, KY; grandson, Alex Kidd of Junction City, KS; and a host of nieces, nephews, and extended family. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, William Hane; and four siblings, Laura, Betty, John, and Kathy.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Patsy A. Pendergast, age 77, of Blue Rapids, passed away on September 30, 2022, at the Frankfort Care Home in Frankfort, Kansas.

Patsy was born August 17, 1945, at Frankfort, the daughter of Harold E. and Mary L. (Booth) Thomas.&nbsp; She married Jere J. Pendergast in Frankfort on March 8, 1964.&nbsp; He passed away in 2006.

Patsy was a homemaker.&nbsp; She enjoyed crochet, needle point, cross stitch, arts and crafts, reading and listening to music.&nbsp; She also loved to spend time with her grandchildren and visiting with her sisters on the phone.

Survivors include her two children: Howard (Teri) Pendergast of Marysville and Tammy Bray of Palmer, two sisters: Connie (Alan) Johnson of Spencer, Iowa, and Beverly Childers of Council Bluffs, Iowa, five grandchildren: Jacqueline (Mitchell), Derek, Dylan, Joshua and Nathaniel, and five great grandchildren.

Preceding Patsy in death are her parents, husband Jere, an infant sister Sandra Thomas, and a brother in law, Terry Childers.

Sharon Ann Bafford Meeks was born on May 7, 1941 to Eloise and Dellis Bafford. She was flown away to meet in person the Lover of her soul, friend, Lord and Savior September 27, 2022 on the birthday of her beloved daughter Celestina Johnson. Sharon spent the last 11 years of her life in Abilene becoming well known and loved in the community. Before that she lived in Portland Oregon and Emmett Idaho and spent some of her best years with her wonderful husband David Meeks who adored her. She was most proud of being a mother of four children and having been a nurses’ aid as a young woman. She was a caretaker and lover of people her whole life. Most who encountered her would mention how sweet she was. No one was a stranger, everyone a friend. Sharon’s joyful spirit and appreciation for having fun was contagious. With her God given superpower (LOVE) and by the grace of God, she was able to endure many trials in her life and continued to love unconditionally; no wonder so many people called her mom. Our most special, sweet, and spunky Mom and Nanna will be missed by so many including her four children, Celestina Johnson, Sharon Ross, James Pio and Jolynda Collier. As well as 12 grandchildren (local: Tony Lawson, Sarah Woods, and Cord Lawson) and 20 great grandchildren (local: Dammion Woods, Sierra Woods, Joshua Woods, Isaiah Woods and Gabriel Woods, Danna Lawson and Aiden Lawson). Sharon Ann Bafford Meeks - May 7th, 1941 - September 27th, 2022

Fred was born in Coffeyville, KS on January 7, 1949 to John Henry Lips, Jr and Iris Christina (Olson) Lips Crawford. He passed away September 28, 2022 at Meadowlark Hills Riley House Retirement Community in Riley, KS at the age of 73.

He was raised in Coffeyville where he attended Coffeyville Grade School, Roosevelt Junior High, graduating from Field Kindley Memorial High School in 1967. Fred earned a degree in Computer Programming in 1971 from Pittsburg State University in Pittsburg, KS. He was a computer analyst and COBOL programmer from 1971 - 2012 starting his career in Kansas City, KS working for Gambles and moving to Plymouth, MN in 1986 working first for Red Owl Foods then SuperValue Foods. Fred moved to Manhattan, KS in the fall of 2018 to be closer to family.

Fred had many hobbies through the years including woodworking, trains, flags, coin collecting and music. In college he was a sound/light technician for a band called the Rising Sun. His love for music has a legacy with donations to the Music In Plymouth Endowment Fund as well as a Pittsburg State University Music Scholarship in his name. Fred also has a Computer Science Information Systems Scholarship Endowment at Pittsburg State University.

Another passion Fred had was being a long-time volunteer for the Jefferson High School Boys Swim and Dive Team (Bloomington, MN). He was the ‘official’ timer for Lane 6 and never missed a swim meet.

In retirement he was a long-time volunteer for the City of Plymouth for the Information Technology and Adopt-A-Park programs. Fred was recognized in the fall of 2015 as a ‘Volunteer of the Quarter’.

Fred always made it home to the family farm in Bartlett, KS for the wheat harvest in June and Christmas. He was extremely close to his brother Stan Lips who preceded him in death and sister-in-law Marty Lips of Manhattan, KS. Fred is also survived by his three nieces Lori (Mark) Schramm of The Colony, TX, Jan (Marshall) Streeter of Cheyenne, WY and Amy (Mack) Terrapin of Alma, KS, his step-sister, Sharon (Crawford) Brown of Prairie Village, KS, six great-nieces and nephews, Brooke (Phill) Wilson, Layne (Alex) Miles, Nick (Brooke) Terrapin, Alli Terrapin, Claire Streeter and Lauren Streeter and four great-great nieces and nephews, Reid and Blaire Wison and Henry and Kate Miles.

Fred Lips

Martha A. Miller, age 85, of Manhattan, died September 26, 2022, at Meadowlark Hills – Stolzer House, where she had been a resident for four days. She had suffered from dementia and then neuropathy for the past year. She leaves behind her husband Mike, her two sons Clay (wife Jan) and Kyle, all in the Dallas area, and a granddaughter Emily, attending UNT in Denton, TX.

Martha was born on February 23, 1937, in the family home in California, MO, the daughter of Fowler and Dorothy (Stark) Young. By the time she was in 6th grade the family had moved 8 times always living on a ranch where her father was employed as a ranch manager. This took the family from Missouri, to Oklahoma, to the mountains of Colorado where she became a skier, learned to groom show calves, and helped herd cattle to the free range in the summer. And learned to whistle very loudly through her front teeth – a talent that came in handy in later years when she was called forward to get the attention of a large gathering. The family then returned to Missouri where they lived in Liberty. Martha was preceded in death by her parents and her brother Fowler A. Young.

After graduating from Liberty High School, she attended the University of Missouri where she was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma. After earning a BS in 1959, she headed to Iowa State to attend graduate school. While at Iowa State she met her future husband Mike. Shortly after receiving her MS degree in 1960, they were married in Liberty and then moved to Manhattan where Mike was on the faculty of Kansas State University. Not finished with education she returned to school and received a PhD in Adult and Continuing Education from Kansas State University – at age 57!

Martha was very active in volunteer and social activities. She was a strong supporter of the arts, and was an early supporter of the Beach Museum of Art where she was a long-time member of the Friends of the Beach and past president. Martha was also a long-time member of Town and Country Garden Club, where she worked to beautify City Park, Sunset Zoo, and several city sites with plants and flowers. As an enthusiastic day lily grower her yards were covered with many varieties. People strolling by would frequently stop and ask if it would be alright for them to come in and tour the yard.

Supporting education became very important to her – both for her and for others. She served as PTA president for two different schools. She was a member of the local USD 383 School Board for 12 years, twice serving as president. She served as Region 4 Vice President of the Kansas Association of School Boards and later as President of the state organization. She made many presentations, and led clinics and seminars at state and national conventions. She was on the Board of Directors of the National School Board Association, leading clinics on three occasions at national conventions.

Martha had an educational consulting business. Martha Miller and Associates, that focused on governance education and superintendent selection. She assisted schools in the state in candidate screening and final selection.

Martha loved to travel. Not long after arriving in Manhattan they purchased a camper that took them to almost every state and all across Canada. When the boys were grown and had interfering activities, somehow camping wasn’t quite as much fun without them, so the camper and big station wagon were sold. After retirement, travels took them to many countries, Italy was always a favorite particularly Tuscany and the Cinque Terre areas. Further travels to South America, to the far east China, Thailand, and the Philippines were also favorites. Finally, their trips took them to Oaxaca, Mexico, where they enjoyed spending the winter months for about 14 years.

A Celebration of Martha’s Life will be held at 10:00 A.M. Saturday, October 8th, at the First Congregational United Church of Christ, 700 Poyntz Avenue, Manhattan.

Martha A. Miller

Jack Lee Mugrage, Jr., known to some as Lee passed away September 25, 2022 at Good Shepherd Hospice House in Manhattan, Kansas, with his wife by his side.&nbsp;

He was born July 8, 1965 in Marietta, Ohio, son of Jack Lee Sr. and Lynn Elizabeth (Guckert) Mugrage. Jack was diagnosed with Muscular Dystrophy in his teenage years, despite the struggles it brought, he chose to do his best to live life.

Shortly after Jack’s birth, his family moved to Rancho, California where he spent his childhood, graduating from Rancho Alamitos High School in 1984. He enjoyed fishing, working with his hands, and&nbsp;classic cars. Around the late eighties Jack moved to Manhattan, where he worked for nine years at&nbsp;Regulator Time Company repairing clocks mostly for schools until his health prevented continuing.&nbsp; During most of those years, he had many fond memories with his good friend Joe Sexton, attending drag and boat races, fishing, and just hanging out together doing projects around his house.

Jack married Melinda Sue Armstrong on August 12, 1995, at Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Manhattan.&nbsp;&nbsp;They were married 27 years, living entirely in Manhattan; they enjoyed family gatherings, card games,&nbsp;movies, car racing, fishing, and rooting for the Kansas City Chiefs and Kansas State Wildcat football. Jack&nbsp;also enjoyed working on computers, playing video games and online games with friends.

Jack was preceded in death by his grandparents; his father, Jack Lee Sr.; father-in-law, Clyde Ancel&nbsp;Armstrong; and sister-in-law, Patrice Ann Rogge.

Cremation has taken place and a funeral mass will be held 2 p.m. Friday, October 7, 2022, at Seven&nbsp;Dolors Catholic Church in Manhattan, with a 3 p.m. graveside service following at Sunrise Cemetery in&nbsp;Manhattan, followed by a 4-6 p.m. Celebration of Life Gathering at Seven Dolors Church basement.

Jack Lee Mugrage, Jr., known to some as Lee passed away September 25, 2022 at Good Shepherd Hospice House in Manhattan, Kansas, with his wife by his side.&nbsp;He was born July 8, 1965 in Marietta, Ohio, son of Jack Lee Sr. and Lynn Elizabeth (Guckert) Mugrage. Jack was diagnosed with Muscular Dystrophy in his teenage years, despite the struggles it brought, he chose to do his best to live life.Shortly after Jack’s birth, his family moved to Rancho, California where he spent his childhood, graduating from Rancho Alamitos High School in 1984. He enjoyed fishing, working with his hands, and&nbsp;classic cars. Around the late eighties Jack moved to Manhattan, where he worked for nine years at&nbsp;Regulator Time Company repairing clocks mostly for schools until his health prevented continuing.&nbsp; During most of those years, he had many fond memories with his good friend Joe Sexton, attending drag and boat races, fishing, and just hanging out together doing projects around his house.Jack married Melinda Sue Armstrong on August 12, 1995, at Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Manhattan.&nbsp;&nbsp;They were married 27 years, living entirely in Manhattan; they enjoyed family gatherings, card games,&nbsp;movies, car racing, fishing, and rooting for the Kansas City Chiefs and Kansas State Wildcat football. Virginia Lorane Martin&nbsp;was born August 10, 1919, in Atchison, Kansas from the parents of Walter J. Martin and Bertha M. Jackson. She was raised in Atchison, Kansas along with her sisters Thelma and Edna, attended schools therein and graduated from Atchison High School in 1937. Virginia worked at various jobs in Atchison before moving to Kansas City. After two years in Kansas City, she moved to Fairfield, California where she met and married her Air Force officer husband Edward P. Noordyk who predeceased her in 2004. Together, they enjoyed 57 years of marriage traveling to locations including Hawaii, Philippines, Texas, Virginia and back to California. Virginia was an accomplished seamstress and later earned an Associate’s Arts degree as well as a previous Licensed Practical Nursing credential from Georgetown University in Washington, DC. Her nursing credentials led to a position at the California Medical Facility in Vacaville, CA from which she retired. Virginia enjoyed antiquing, golf, bingo, raising roses and quilting (from which she received many awards).

She passed away peacefully on July 9, 2022, just a month short of her 103rd birthday. Having outlived most all her relatives and friends, she leaves her only son, Richard D. Noordyk, two grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. Her ashes will be laid to rest next to her father in the McFarland City cemetery on Wednesday, October 19, 2022, at 1:30 pm.&nbsp;

Stefanie Linn Turner, 44, passed away September 27, 2022, in Wamego.

 </figure>Stefanie Linn Turner, 44, passed away September 27, 2022, in Wamego.She was born July 4, 1978, in Larned, the daughter of Philip Alan and Ann Vratil Schreiber.A Larned resident until 2001, she moved to Wamego where she was the 
head of the billing department at Manhattan Dermatology. She was a 
member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Larned. She was always a helper 
and was active in the kids wrestling club. She loved music, reading, 
dogs, fishing, taking pictures, being outdoors, decorating for the 
holidays, watching the Chiefs and all K-State sports. She especially 
loved watching her kids, nieces and nephews in sports and all their 
activites.On October 23, 1999, she married Cody Joe Turner at Larned; he survives.Other survivors include: mother, Ann Schreiber, Larned; children, 
Adreana and Dalton Turner, of the home; sister, Emily (Michael) Racette,
 Larned; nieces and nephews, Jocelynn, Logan, Brayson, Camden, Kennedy, 
Savannah; and her beloved dogs, Mocha and Ashford.She was preceded in death by: her father, Philip Schreiber; 
grandfather, Leon Schreiber, grandparents, Bill and Mildred Hanshew, and
 Leo and Nina Vratil.Memorial mass will be 11:00 a.m. Friday, October 7, 2022, at Sacred 
Heart Catholic Church, Larned, with Father Bernard Felix presiding. 
Visitation will be 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Thursday, October 6, 2022 at 
Beckwith Mortuary, Larned, with family present from 4-6 p.m. Inurnment 
will be in the Larned Cemetery. A Celebration of Life in Wamego will be
