Shirley Grace Kies, 86, of Junction City, Kansas, passed away on March 30, 2023. Cremation will take place. She was born on June 10, 1936, Muskegon, Michigan, to Frank and Ida (Pastoor) Yonkman. On
 January 16, 1953, she married the love of her life, Alford "Glen" Kies.
 Together they raised four children while maintaining a 23-year military
 career. Shirley was a devoted military wife, mother, and 
grandmother. She enjoyed working in the yard and took pride in having a 
lovely home. She also enjoyed shopping, walking and spending time with 
her grandchildren. Shirley is survived by her two 
daughters, Connie (Robin) Stewart of Junction City, Kansas, Jeannie 
(Bradley) Herndon of Pratt, Kansas; one son, Kenny (Suzy) Kies of 
Eudora, Kansas; 13 grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren; and two 
step-sisters, Janeth Farber-Addis and Maxine Nickols of Michigan. She
 was preceded in death by her parents; her beloved husband, Glen; her 
eldest son, Larry Kies; two brothers, Frank and Fred Yonkman; and one 
step-brother, Fred Haddix.&nbsp;

Jeanne Ludwig Cochrane, 97, of the Oregon communities of Banks and Forest Grove passed away March 21, 2023, at Tuality Community Hospital. A
 memorial service is planned for this coming summer at the Banks 
Community United Methodist Church in Banks, OR. The date will be set 
later. Jeanne was born November 30, 1925, in Minneapolis, 
Minnesota. She was one of four children born to Edward and Mary (Gable) 
Ludwig. She grew up and received her early education in Saint Louis 
Park, Minnesota, and graduated from Saint Louis Park High School in 
1943. Following high school, Jeanne attended the University of Minnesota
 Nursing School, obtaining her Public Health Nursing degree in 1948. 
After graduating, she worked as a Registered Nurse in Minneapolis for a 
year.

Jeanne met her future husband, Carl, while attending the University 
of Minnesota. They met at a social dance hosted by the nurses’ dormitory
 where she stayed on campus. Jeanne and Carl courted for three years 
before they were married on June 18, 1949 in Minneapolis, at the church 
Jeanne’s father rebuilt. Following their wedding, they made their home 
in Seattle, WA, where Jeanne settled into her life as a devoted wife, 
mother, &amp; homemaker. In 1956, they moved to Melbourne, FL for a 
short period, returning to the Seattle area the following year. They 
made their home in the Seattle suburb of Mercer Island for several more 
years, where they raised their five children. Jeanne returned to work as
 a nurse for a period during that time, when her family especially 
needed it. In 1972, the family moved to Aloha, OR. In 1975, Carl, 
Jeanne, and family moved to the community of Banks, OR and settled into 
their home on one acre overlooking the foothills of the coast range, 
staying there until 2014, when Jeanne moved to Forest Grove. Throughout
 her long life, Jeanne’s husband, children, and – especially – her 
grandchildren were the most important thing to her, as was her love for 
Jesus, and for others. In addition to being the most loving wife, 
mother, and grandmother, Jeanne was an active member of the Banks 
Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday School for 35 years and was 
president of the Women’s Society of Christian Service. Jeanne was the 
embodiment of Love, Sweetness, and Giving; and she gave her all to 
anyone around her, most especially to all the children she so loved, 
greeting everyone with her ever-present smile &amp; kindness. She was 
everyone’s favorite babysitter, and her house was nearly always filled 
with the various children from the neighborhood, who found in her a 
loving shelter. She lovingly cared for the sick &amp; the injured in her
 community, shared her home-cooked meals, and visited the elderly, 
keeping them company with her unfailingly warm, compassionate spirit. 
Jeanne was amazingly artistic and especially adept at crafts, using her 
talents to help entertain, educate, and enrich the lives of both 
children and adults in her life. She never hesitated to sacrifice her 
own needs &amp; time, to do for others – willing to forego having a 
“pristine” house in order to have the craft supplies needed for others’ 
sakes, or to allow little children to play freely. She used her nursing 
skills to volunteer at schools, immunization clinics, and other settings
 whenever needed – anything to help people, which was her life passion.

Every holiday or special occasion, Jeanne’s neighbors could always 
count on seeing her special paintings on her home’s windows, as she 
always celebrated life and wanted to use her creative &amp; artistic 
talents to lift others’ lives. Her love extended as well to animals, as 
she viewed any of her own children’s pets as her grandchildren; to 
Jeanne, her daughters’ dogs were her “grand-puppies." She was also well 
known as being the most devoted fan of the Portland Trail Blazers, 
especially Terry Porter, and Clyde “the Glide” Drexler, sending 
hand-written birthday cards to every player on the team. One of the 
highlights in her life was getting to meet Terry Porter, Clyde, &amp; 
her other “boys” up close, at a special celebration in Portland. Her 
sports-bug stemmed from her days back at the U. of Minnesota, where she 
cheered on her beloved Golden Gophers; their fight song became one of 
her favorites to sing, up to her very last days.

Jeanne is preceded in death by her husband, Carl Cochrane, daughter, 
Loni Vendettuoli; brother, Charles Ludwig; and sister, Margaret 
Varnuska. She is survived by her 101-year-old sister, Betty 
Fuller, of Minneapolis, MN;&nbsp; daughters, Jill Kilby and Gwen Steinbach, 
both of Forest Grove, OR; her sons, Brad Cochrane of&nbsp; Forest Grove, OR, 
and Todd (with spouse, Chun-Yen) Cochrane of Manhattan, KS;&nbsp; and her six
 grandchildren: Blaine Vendettuoli, Heather Nielson, John Steinbach, 
Rosie Ramirez, and Anne and Albert Cochrane. In lieu of flowers, 
the family suggests donations in Jeanne’s name be made to the University
 of Minnesota School of Nursing; Banks Community United Methodist 
Church; the American Cancer Society; or St. Jude Children’s Research 
Hospital.

Jeanne Ludwig Cochrane

Dalmas "Dal" Kennan Coates, 75, of Wamego, Kansas, 
died Tuesday, March 28, 2023, at the University of Kansas St. Francis 
Campus in Topeka. He was a resident of the community since 1984.

Dal was born April 28, 1947, in Hammond, Louisiana, the son of 
Kevlin and Jessie (Hampton) Coates. He attended local grade school and 
graduated from High School in Ponchatoula, Louisiana. He then served in 
the United States Navy during Viet Nam. He was a Boatswains Mate on a 
Swift Boat, patrolling the rivers.

Dal worked as a heavy equipment operator and also Safety 
Supervisor at Jeffrey Energy Center until his retirement. He was a 
member of the American Legion, American Legion Riders, Son’s of the 
American Legion, and the VFW. He was also a member of the Wamego Country
 Club and several shooting clubs.

Dal loved to play golf, fish, trap shoot, and make trips to the 
casino, and especially enjoyed time with his family and grandchildren. 
He was a motorcycle enthusiast. Patriotism was very important to Dal and
 he was thrilled to be a part of one of the Wamego Honor Flights. Dal
 married Mary Barbara Bogart on February 20, 1970. Their love and lives 
were entwined for almost 53 years before Barb preceded him in death on 
January 23, 2023.

Dal is survived by his children; Kennan Coates (Katie), Wamego, 
Brad Efurd, Blaine, Stacey Schmidt, Sedgwick; his grandchildren, Lance 
Bean, Taylor Ireton, Garrett Schmidt, and Kevlynn Coates, plus four 
great-grandchildren; his siblings, Robert Coates, New Orleans, LA, Cecil
 Coates, Albany, LA, Kay Cagle (Jerry), Hot Springs, AR, Ronald Coates 
(Judy), Pumpkin Center, LA PeeWee Coates (Patsy), Baytown, TX, Doug 
Coates (Gwen), Hammond, LA, Faye Bodi, Hammond, LA, Cindy Pecoraro 
(Larry), Pumkin Center, LA, Lynn Adams (Ricky), Pumkin Center, LA; and 
numerous nieces, nephews, and friends. Dal was preceded in death by his 
parents, and his grandson, Bryce Reed.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 11:00 am, Saturday, April 
1, 2023, at Campanella and Stewart Funeral Home in Wamego. Military 
honors will be performed at the funeral home by the United States Navy 
and the American Legion. Inurnment will be held in Fairview Cemetery in 
rural Dickinson County at a later date. 

The family suggests memorial 
contributions to the Kansas Honor Flights – Wamego High School, and

 Lou Wilson, age 80, passed away on Saturday, March 25th, 2023, at Belton,&nbsp; Missouri. Sharon was born in Manhattan, Kansas, to Elmer and Elva 
(Elliott) Wilson on August 18, 1942. She graduated from Blue Springs 
High School. She also took many college classes. 

Sharon worked in the 
Sales/Retail Industry, her entire working career. She loved her cat Odie
 and missed seeing him during her rehabilitation stay. She was a very 
private person, keeping her circle very small.

In
 her early years she loved swimming and was quite the dancer. Winning 
awards at various couple's dance contests. She also had a quick wit 
about her. We will miss that mischievous smile. Also, the laugh that 
meant - "I don't want to answer any more of your questions."

Sharon
 was preceded in death by her parents, a brother Monte "Jim" Wilson, and
 sisters Aveta Lewis, Michelle Creason and Renee Dahl.

Survivors
 include her Precious Boy "Odie", sisters Shirley Erlich and Geraldine 
Dempsay, both of Junction City Kansas. Sister-in-Law Patricia Wilson, 
Grandview Missouri, and many nieces and nephews.

Sharon Lou Wilson

Marilyn Jean (Brandon) Twining, daughter of Francis and Alma (Elder) 
Brandon, was born October 19, 1939, in rural Forty Four (now known as 
Hatter’s Corner), Arkansas. She grew up in various north central Kansas 
farming communities. Having accepted Jesus Christ as her personal Lord 
and Savior in 1956 she was baptized at West Side Baptist Church, Topeka,
 Kansas. She graduated from Highland Park high School, Topeka, Kansas in
 1957. On June 1, 1958, she was united in marriage with Gail L. Twining 
at West Side Baptist Church, Topeka, Kansas. To this marriage were born a
 son, Trenton, and two daughters, Denise and Leslie.

In
 1961, she moved with her husband to Manhattan, Kansas, where she became 
private secretary to the Dean of Intramural Sports and Head Coach of the
 Crew Rowing Team at Kansas State University. When her husband answered 
the call to the Pastoral Ministry in 1970, she moved with him and their 
three children to Washington, Kansas, where she became Deputy Registrar 
of Deeds for Washington County, Kansas. When she moved again with her 
family to Lansing, Kansas, in 1975, she became Executive Secretary to the
 Vice President for Development at Saint Mary’s College, Leavenworth, 
Kansas. At the same time, she was busily acting as proofreader, typist 
and chief encourager for her husband, Gail, while he was earning a 
college degree and a seminary degree.

After moving a 
fourth time with her family in 1977 to Tekamah, Nebraska, she became 
Bookkeeper and unofficial “Assistant Administrator” at Tekamah Nursing 
Home (now known as Tekamah Arbor Care Center). It was in Tekamah where 
all three of her children married and left home. It was also here she 
became a member of Tekamah Chapter Number 131, Order of the Eastern 
Star.

From Tekamah, she moved with her husband to 
Huron, South Dakota. Here, she took a course preparing her to be 
licensed as a Real Estate Agent, working for Ace Realty. A sixth move 
brought her to rural Benton, Kansas - a few miles northeast of Wichita, 
Kansas. It was back to school again, this time preparing to be certified
 as Dietary Manager for Wheat State Manor Nursing Home, Whitewater 
Kansas.

Upon retiring in 2001, she moved one more time 
with her husband, back to the place they had considered to be home for 
many a year, Tekamah. Here, she worked for three years as Proofreader 
for the Burt County Plaindealer and the Midwest Messenger.

She went on to be with the Lord March 17, 2023 after a long illness.

She
 was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers Berkley and Glenn 
Brandon, a sister, Wanda Cozine and two sisters-in-law, Elizabeth 
Brandon and Marlene Brandon. She Leaves behind to mourn her passing and 
to look forward to the reunion that is to come, husband, Gail; son 
Trenton and his wife, Barb; Daughters, Denise Hunter and her husband, 
Dave and Leslie Petersen and her husband, Ray; eight grandchildren, 
twenty-three great-grandchildren and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews,
 and friends. Especially to be noted among the latter are the staff at 
Tekamah Arbor Care Center, who cared for her so well in her illness of 
nine long years.

fourth time with her family in 1977 to Tekamah, Nebraska, she became 
Bookkeeper and unofficial “Assistant Administrator” at Tekamah Nursing 
Home (now known as Tekamah Arbor Care Center). It was in Tekamah where 
all three of her children married and left home. It was also here she 
became a member of Tekamah Chapter Number 131, Order of the Eastern 
Star.From Tekamah, she moved with her husband to 
Huron, South Dakota. Here, she took a course preparing her to be 
licensed as a Real Estate Agent, working for Ace Realty. A sixth move 
brought her to rural Benton, Kansas - a few miles northeast of Wichita, 
Kansas. It was back to school again, this time preparing to be certified
 as Dietary Manager for Wheat State Manor Nursing Home, Whitewater 
Kansas.Upon retiring in 2001, she moved one more time 
with her husband, back to the place they had considered to be home for 
many a year, Tekamah. Here, she worked for three years as Proofreader 
for the Burt County Plaindealer and the Midwest Messenger.She went on to be with the Lord March 17, 2023 after a long illness.She
 was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers Berkley and Glenn 
Brandon, a sister, Wanda Cozine and two sisters-in-law, Elizabeth 
Brandon and Marlene Brandon. She Leaves behind to mourn her passing and 
to look forward to the reunion that is to come, husband, Gail; son 
Trenton and his wife, Barb; Daughters, Denise Hunter and her husband, 
Dave and Leslie Petersen and her husband, Ray; eight grandchildren, 
twenty-three great-grandchildren and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews,
 and friends. Especially to be noted among the latter are the staff at 
Tekamah Arbor Care Center, who cared for her so well in her illness of

Phyllis Mae Scarlett, 91, formerly of Valley Center KS, passed away Monday, March 27, 2023 at Presbyterian Manor Newton Kansas. She was born May 2, 1931, in rural Atchison County KS to James and Luella (Robinson) Cowley, the youngest of three children.

Phyllis married Richard Loren Scarlett April 26, 1952. He passed away November 27, 2006, after 54 years of marriage.

Raised on a farm, she enjoyed working and being outside. She attended a one-room schoolhouse known as Prairie View for grade school and graduated from Atchison County Community High School in 1949. Moving to Topeka, KS after graduation she worked at the State Department of Social Welfare. Richard was in the army, stationed at Fort Riley, and after their marriage she worked for the Federal Government Selective Services, Department of the Army. They later moved to California for 5 years, Arkansas for 2 years before eventually returning to Kansas where they lived in Topeka, Manhattan, Valley Center, Wichita and finally back to Valley Center. During her years back in Kansas she worked in various clerical positions, one of her favorites being The Better Book Room in Wichita.

She enjoyed many different activities and hobbies: As member of the First United Methodist Church in Valley Center she enjoyed participating in several groups and bible study; camping, traveling and playing games with family and friends; square dancing with Sunburst Squares; reading, puzzles, playing the organ and embroidering. Before moving to Presbyterian Manor, she lived a quarter mile up the road from Donnie and Debbie. While there she would ride through the cattle with Debbie on a side-by-side several times a day to check for any cows that were close to calving. Another farm chore she enjoyed while there was feeding the barn cats, and actually took in one of their kittens, a calico she named PeeWee to live in the house with her.

Survivors include Debbie Hamilton (Donnie) of rural Newton, KS. Also surviving are granddaughter Melissa Hamilton (fianc6 Jason Smith), and step grandson Kyle Redinger of Park City KS, and 3 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister, Marjorie (Marj) Gilliland and a brother, Ralph Cowley.

Family will greet friends one hour before the service. Funeral services will be held 10:00 a.m. Saturday, April 1, 2023 at the First United Methodist Church, Valley Center. Trent Alan Guthrie, 48, of St. Joseph, Mo., passed away Thursday, March 16, 
2023, from a sudden illness at a Columbia, SC Medical Center. 

He was born
 February 14, 1975, in Manhattan, KS, son of Donna and Lt. Col. John 
Guthrie. He graduated in 1993 from Thomas B. Doherty High School in 
Colorado Springs, CO, and in 1999 from the University of 
Colorado-Colorado Springs, with a B.S. in Chemistry. Trent began his 
career as an R&amp;D chemist at Eltron Research and as a water treatment
 process optimization specialist for the City of Boulder, Colorado. He 
began his career in the pharmaceutical industry at Pfizer in Kalmazoo, 
MI, and for the past 15 years he held various professional roles at 
Boehringer Ingelheim Animal Health in St. Joseph, MO. 

He married 
Cassandra "Cassie" Krumme on July 30, 2013, in Buena Vista, CO. He 
enjoyed spending time on his Jeep adventures, gardening, cooking chef 
quality meals for his family and friends, and sharing his incredible 
depth of knowledge on scientific topics. He was a member of the Show-Me 
Jeep Club in St. Joseph, MO. 

Trent was preceded in death by his parents.
 Survivors include wife, Cassie Guthrie, sons, Abner and Boone Guthrie, 
brother, Brett (Nichola Lembergs) Guthrie of Colorado Springs, CO,

Helen Louise Boody Sawyer died on Friday, March 24, 2023, at Botkin Care and Rehab in Wellington, Kansas.

Mrs.
 Sawyer was born January 31, 1933, in Hutchinson, Kansas to Wilmer 
Walborn Boody and Charlotte “Ruth” Hamilton Boody. As a youth she spent 
her years in Kansas, Missouri, Utah, Pennsylvania, and Colorado.  She 
was a graduate of Canon City High School, Canon City, Colorado. She also
 attended Phillips University in Enid, Oklahoma, and Manhattan Christian 
College in Manhattan, Kansas.

On May 29, 1952, Helen married the 
love of her life, Porter “Eugene” Sawyer in Enid, Oklahoma.  She was a 
stay-at-home mom while living in Colorado.   She sold Avon, babysat in 
the home, sang in various church choirs, taught Sunday School, and was a
 Den Mother for Cub Scouts.  Once the Sawyer family had relocated to 
South Haven, in 1975, from Colorado, Helen went to work at Wheatland 
Lodge Nursing Home as a Certified Nurse Assistant, a Certified Medical 
Aide, and Social Services Director.  She retired from South Haven Guest 
Home (formerly Wheatland Lodge) after 28 years of service. Helen loved 
to knit and crochet, and lovingly gave away what she had created.  Many 
babies wore the baby booties that she had completed.

Helen is 
survived by her youngest brother, Dale Boody; four children: Charles 
(Loveda) Sawyer of Miles City, Montana; Robert Sawyer of Hutchinson, 
Kansas; David (Yvonne) Sawyer of Hutchinson, Kansas; Linda (Rick) Evans 
of Yates Center, Kansas. 11 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren 
with one on the way. Also surviving is brother-in-law, Jack Garrison, 
and many other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her 
husband of 69 years, Porter Eugene Sawyer, her parents, and two 
brothers: Howard Boody and Elwin Boody.

A Celebration of Life will
 be held on Friday, June 2, 2023, in South Haven, KS at the Christian 
Church, with internment to follow at the Rose Hill Cemetery, South 
Haven, KS. Family asks that you wear purple, yellow, or pink, as they 
are Helen’s favorite colors.

Duane C. Wege, 81, of Onaga, passed away on Monday, March 27, 2023, at the Community Hospital in Onaga.

He was born May 1, 1941, on the farm at Onaga, the son of Otto and 
Hannah Ladwig Wege.&nbsp; He graduated from Onaga High School in 1959 and had
 served in the U.S. Army National Guard.

Duane was a farmer and a stockman and had been a 4-H Youth Leader.&nbsp;

He married Loretta K. Brunkow on October 8, 1967, at Onaga.&nbsp; She survives, of the home.

Duane was preceded in death by his parents, a granddaughter, Emma Perry, and a brother, Curtis Wege.

Other survivors include two daughters, Gail Wege and Carol Perry 
(Luke), all of Onaga, a sister, Lavina Weber, Onaga and six 
grandchildren, Faith and Allie Perry and Zabel, Maesynn, Krevour and 
Annalynn Collins

Funeral Services will be 11:00 a.m. Friday, March 31st, at the Chapel 
Oaks Funeral Home in Onaga.&nbsp; Burial with military honors will follow in

Patrick DaQuan Goodman, 27, of Manhattan died Wednesday, March 15th, 
at Ascension Via Christi Health Hospital. He was a food service preparer
 at Dairy Queen in Manhattan.

Patrick was born at Fort Riley, KS on November 6, 1995, the son of Virginia Denise Goodman, of 
Junction City and Christopher Bizzell, of South Carolina. He was a 
graduate of Manhattan High School.

Patrick is  also 
survived by parents; a daughter, Amyah Nicole Goodman, of Killeen, 
Texas; a brother, Tavon J. Goodman, of Junction City;  sisters, Janacky 
Drummurd and Kristen Bizzell both of Georgia; cousins, aunts, a special 
"auni" Vernita Campbell, uncles, family friends; and his siblings 
(Tashayla, Helen, Joe Joe, and Josiah); also surviving is his 
grandfather, Patrick Goodman.

She was born on October 23, 1943, in Renton, Washington.

 held jobs at the Capital Area Intermediate Unit, Ralston Purina, 
Universal Video and JPL Productions, but was especially passionate about
 her work at the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank, where she performed 
vital roles in the daily operations for many years.

Patricia
 enjoyed doing paper crafts, word puzzles, loved to read, was passionate
 about music, and especially enjoyed long lunches and dinners with her 
many friends.  She will be remembered as someone who touched everyone’s 
lives that she came in contact with.

She was preceded 
in death by her father, Frank Bergsma, her stepmother, Betty Bergsma, 
and her brothers Frank, Steven, Jan and Tim.

Surviving 
are her husband, George J. Davis; 3 daughters, Whitney Standlee and her 
husband, Todd, of Eastington, England; Marliene Fuller and her husband, 
Jeffrey, of Junction City, KS; Kristin Sides and her husband, Peter, of 
State College; 2 sisters, Susan Rundle of Lacey, WA, and Nancy Schlepp 
of Kent, WA; 4 grandchildren, Ryan Standlee (Jessica Matthewman), Nathan
 Standlee (Julie Esterhuizen), Brady Sides, and Serra Sides; and a great
 granddaughter, Dylan Standlee.

Memorial services will 
be held at 11:00 A.M. on Thursday, March 30, 2023, at the Jesse H. Geigle
 Funeral Home, 2100 Linglestown Road, Harrisburg, PA 17110.

Hye Sun Sloop, 68, of Holton, KS, passed away Sunday, March 26, 2023,&nbsp; at her home surrounded by her family. She was born May 10, 1954, in 
Yongdok-kun Kyongbuk-Do, South Korea, the daughter of Nam To Ho and Kwon
 O Son.

Sun graduated from high school in South Korea and earned 
some college credit in art. She owned and operated, with her husband, 
Keith, Quality Cleaners in Hiawatha, KS for over 25 years. After moving 
to Holton in 2006, she worked about 5 years at Holton Community 
Hospital, over 6 years for Dr. Vance Lassey at Holton Direct Care and in
 the Dietary Dept. for Medicalodges of Jackson County.&nbsp;

Her passion was taking care of her husband, children, 
grandchildren and extended family. She also enjoyed her walk around Elk 
Horn Lake, cooking – Korean cuisine, gardening, playing bingo and slot 
machines.

She married Keith Leon Sloop on November 26, 1976, in Seoul, South Korea. They celebrated over 46 years of marriage.

Survivors include her husband, Keith of the home; 2 
daughters, Tracy Mercer (Chris) of Holton, KS and Heather Westpfahl 
(Jason) of Liberty, MO; 2 sons, Scott Sloop (Rosie) of Seneca, KS and 
Kevin Sloop (Katie) of Manhattan, KS; her best friend, Yon Si of Irving,
 TX; 3 sisters, Nam Sun Ja, Nam Kung Sun and Nam Un Kyong; brother, Nam 
Yong Jae; 12 grandchildren, Kaleb Smith (Morgan), Grant Mercer, Katelynn

Hye 'Sun' Sloop

Christopher L. Cease was born June 30, 1973, in Wamego, Kansas, the son of
 Larry and Sheryl (Holloway) Cease. He grew up in Wamego enjoying 
playing sports and graduated from Wamego High School with the class of 
1991. (Not sure on that) 
On April 29, 2011, he was united in marriage to Tonya Martens in Ponca 
City, Oklahoma. Chris was a hard working dad and husband and was very 
involved with his kids, helping them by coaching baseball, basketball, 
and football. He worked for Midco Plastics in Enterprise for several 
years as a Production Manager and then for Land Pride as a paint line 
lead. 
Chris passed away on Monday, March 27, 2023, at his home in Abilene with 
his family by his side. He is survived by his loving wife Tonya of the 
home, father Larry Cease of Wamego, sons Christopher and his wife Jewlia
 Cease of Abilene, Chrisxavier Cease of Enterprise, step daughter Kyla 
Hasselman of Abilene, step sons Logan Hasselman of Washington State, 
Rhyce Hasselman of Abilene, Nathan Hasselman of Abilene, brother Garnett
 Cease and his wife Annie of Manhattan, grandchildren Ella and Oaklen 
Cease. He was preceded in death by his mother. 
Cremation has been selected by Chris’s family. A memorial service will

Robert B. Niehoff Sr. was born in 1928, and entered eternal life on March 16, 2023. He was preceded in death by his wife of 42 years and mother of his eight children, Carolyn Lynch Niehoff; his parents Charles and Lillian Niehoff; his sisters Helen Demling; Thelma Tanner; Lillian Brauner; Margaret Raque; Ruth Hutcherson; brothers Joseph and Herman Niehoff.

Bob is survived by his loving wife of 32 years Fay Comfort Niehoff; his children Kathleen Wheatley of Bellbrook, OH; Susan Mize (Lynn) of Pensacola, FL; Robert B. Niehoff Jr. (Marilyn); Brian Niehoff (Usha Reddi) of Manhattan, KS; Timothy Niehoff (Timmie Butler); Patrick (Peggy) of Ft. Mitchell, KY; Laurie Niehoff of New York, NY; John (Lisa); Lisa Comfort Brooks (Richard); Mark Comfort (Joan) of Lexington, KY; Paul Comfort (Paula) of Savannah, GA; and 18 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Bob
 was a lifelong resident of Louisville and a 1945 graduate of St. 
Xavier High School. He was a longtime employee of Kentucky Dairies and 
Sealtest. He retired from Rohm and Haas Chemical.

Music was always an important part of Bob’s life. He played trombone from the time he was in the 6th grade until he wa 94 years old. He played with the Holy Name Band and several dance bands, most often with the Don Krekel Orchestra. He was also a very talented carpenter and handyman.

Bob was a loving husband, father, grandpa, and great grandpa. He loved our many family parties.

Several of his children inherited his talent for music, and all loved to entertain.

He was a member of the Catholic Church of the Epiphany, where he served as Eucharistic minister to the homebound. He also volunteered at the Franciscan Kitchen for many years. He will be missed by all who knew him.

Visitation will be at Ratterman Funeral Home, 12900 Shelbyville Road on March 30 at 5:00 PM. Mass and Christian burial will be held at Epiphany Church at 914 Old Harrods Creek Road on March 31 at 10:00 AM.

Terry "T.W." Decker, 84, passed away at Salina Regional on March 12, 
2023.  He was born April 18, 1938, to Wesley Decker and Beulah (Walton) 
Decker.  He attended a rural grade school and graduated from Abilene 
High School in 1956. 

 He married Marylyn Miller on April 12, 1984, in 
Reno, Nevada.  He was employed by Abilene Flour Mill, 
Archer-Daniels-Midland, Mobile Travelers and retired from Great Plains 
Mfg. 

T.W. was in the Army Reserves for six years. His favorite pasttime was fishing. He enjoyed bowling with team members throughout the 
years. Terry was on the Vidricksen team when they captured second place
 in the 1983 ABC tournament in Baltimore. His hobby was drilling 
bowling balls at Westwood Pro Shop and doing ball work for Junction City
 Bowling Lanes. Terry and Marylyn enjoyed many bowling trips across the
 country. The late night fishing on Milford Lake with friends and 
relaxing in Branson. 
Terry was preceded in death by his parents, sister; Sharon Flipso in 2016 and in-laws; Ron and Sonjia Miller. 
Survivors include, Wife; Marylyn, Two nieces; Shannon (Doug) Pallo and 
Wendy (Steve) Getzfrid, one nephew; Scott (Polly) Miller.

Terry 'T.W.' Decker

Carol Ann (Jack) McDowell was born on July 10, 1945 in Hutchinson, Kansas 
to John Henry and Geneva Mae (Williams) Jack. The family moved around 
the Midwest throughout her childhood before eventually settling in the 
El Dorado area where she graduated from Butler County Junior College. 
She married her loving husband, Keith, on January 1, 1967. They had 51 
wonderful years together through which they raised sons, Jeff and Brian.
 When the boys started school, Carol worked in many capacities: 
Travel agent, bookkeeper, paraprofessional for the hearing impaired, 
City Clerk and numerous hours volunteering at local hospitals. Carol 
and her family were well loved in their many communities including 
Manhattan, KS; Lee's Summit, MO; Centerton, AR; and Bartlesville, OK. 
Carol enjoyed reading, knitting, sewing and shopping. She could often 
be found getting her favorite Rt 44 drink at Sonic (easy on the ice). 
Carol was a steadfast Christian and involved in multiple church 
communities. She and Keith were faithful members of Crestview Christian 
Church in Manhattan and East Bartlesville Christian Church. Her greatest
 joy was her grandchildren. Carol went to her heavenly father on March 24, 2023, at Homestead Estates in Wichita, KS surrounded by family. She
 is survived by son Jeff (Tammy) McDowell of Elk City, OK; son Brian 
(Lisa) McDowell of Baldwin City, KS; grandsons Joshua and Jackson 
McDowell of Elk City, OK; granddaughter Alex (Aaron) Grunewald of

Rosie Livengood, 79, died March 25, 2023, in rural Morganville, KS.&nbsp; 
She was born on July 17, 1943, in Clay Center, the daughter of Harlan and
 Marguerite (Nelson) Young.&nbsp; 

Rosie grew up in Clay County and was a 
graduate of Morganville High School. She married Lon Livengood on July 
23, 1961.&nbsp; They farmed and made their home in rural Morganville.&nbsp; Rosie 
worked as a bookkeeper at Gibson’s and as a clerk and later a meter 
reader for KP&amp;L.&nbsp; 

She was a member of the Morganville United 
Methodist Church and enjoyed gardening.&nbsp; Rosie was preceded in death by

Cremation will take place. No memorial service is planned. Lynnette was born February 25, 1950, in Watertown, New York, the daughter of Dennie and Audrey (King) Hanlon. Lynnette

Paul Walter Batt, formerly of Liberal, KS, passed away on March 22, 
2023, at Bellvue Nursing Home in Oklahoma City, to join Jesus and his 
best friend and wife, Evelyn Batt who passed before him.

He was born number six in a family of nine, on the family farm at 
Shattuck, Oklahoma on November 26, 1941, to Sam and Hulda Batt. Paul 
lived there until the age of 10, before moving to the new family farm at
 Logan, Oklahoma.

He spent the rest of his childhood and early adult years helping run 
the family farm and dairy. He took great pride in having his dairy 
cattle. He then moved to Liberal Kansas, where he met Evelyn Downing at 
the Snack Shack in 1968. He proposed to her later that year in front of 
her parent’s house. The two were married February 1, 1969. They enjoyed 
53 wonderful years of marriage.

Paul worked for Tradewinds and Boles Ranch, before settling into a 
career starting in 1976 at National Beef, before his retirement in 2012.
 He and Evelyn spent days together transporting vehicles for a local car
 dealer. They were members of the New Beginnings Church in Liberal.

His greatest passions were time with family, fishing trips to the 
Colorado mountains, reading the Bible, and spending days in his shop 
designing and building numerous projects like three-wheeled bikes. 
Almost an aspiring inventor, he had a creative mind for fabricating an 
idea Into something purposeful. 

Paul is survived by their two sons, David and wife Dana, of 
Manhattan, KS and Donovan and wife Lisa, of Turpin, Oklahoma. He is also
 survived by grandchildren, Dawson and wife Jolee, Anna, Sammi, Paul 
David, Drew, and Dillon, as well as two great-grandchildren, Dacen and 
Daxon. Also surviving are siblings Leland (Ella Mae) Batt, Charlotte 
Brooks, Mary (Bill) Nichols, Pauline (Dale) Ditto, and Sam Batt. Other 
family surviving are sister-in-law Virginia (Ed) Means, sister-in-law 
Kathryn Dotson, brother-in-law Gene (Joann) Downing, and numerous nieces
 and nephews. 

Passing before him, besides parents Sam and Hulda, were his wife 
Evelyn, Rosie (Martin) Pope, George Batt, and Margaret Heil. Anyone who 
met this gentle soul realized the privilege of knowing a genuine 
follower of Jesus, who will be greatly missed by countless friends and 
family.

Visitation will be 4-8 pm Tuesday, March 28, at Buchanan Funeral 
Service in Oklahoma City. Funeral service will be 10:00 a.m. on 
Wednesday, March 29, at the funeral home. 

Graveside service and burial 
will be Thursday, March 30, at Liberal City Cemetery, Liberal, KS at 
10:30 a.m

Margaret
 Ann Allen. Age 66, passed away Friday, March 24, 2023, at Manna House of
 Prayer, Concordia, Kansas, where she had requested to spend her last 
days on hospice with the Sisters of St. Joseph there. Margaret was born 
September 2, 1956, at Hays, Kansas, daughter of Gladys M. Phillips and 
Thomas C. Allen of Plainville, Kansas. She graduated from Plainville 
Rural High School in 1974 and Fort Hays State University in 1978.

She
 married her best friend, John McKillip Edmonds, at Sacred Heart Church 
in Plainville, Kansas on February 1, 1980. He preceded her in death on 
October 24, 2013. They had two children, John Thomas and Wallis Sofie.

Margaret
 was a journalist. She worked for the Ellis County Star, the Manhattan 
Mercury, Scotts Bluff Star-Harold, Wichita Eagle, Daily Journal in 
Caracas, Venezuela and the Hays Daily News. She also worked for the 
Dallas Business Journal and was Science Writer for Southern Methodist 
University in the News and Communications Center in Dallas, Texas. Her 
expert communications resulted in a trip to CERN (European Organization 
for Nuclear Research Research) near Geneva, Switzerland where she toured
 the Large Hadron Collider, the most powerful particle accelerator ever 
built. The accelerator sits in a tunnel 100 meters underground on the 
Franco-Swiss border near Geneva, Switzerland.

Margaret
 is survived by her children and one grandchild, Sarai Jackson, Hays; 
brothers Michael (Paula) of Douglas, Georgia and John (June Knittel) of 
Hays; sister, Marcia Allen, CSJ of Concordia; nieces Josie (Jesse) 
Thompson and children,&nbsp; Hoxie, KS, Jessalyn (Zach) Brungardt, Hays; Anna

Margaret Ann Allen

Gerald Lee Laudermilk passed away on Thursday, March 23, 2023, at Abilene Memorial Hospital at the age of 87. A celebration of Jerry’s life will be held at the First Presbyterian Church of Abilene located at 505 NW 3rd St. from 2:00PM - 4:00PM on Saturday April 1, 2023. 
Jerry was born in Holtville, California on August 1, 1935. He was the oldest of three children; his brother, Ronald, is three years younger and his sister, Linda, is five years younger. Unfortunately, when Jerry was in high school, their father passed away. He then took on work responsibilities to help his family. Jerry enjoyed music from an 
early age and taught himself to play piano by ear on an old upright piano.

His brother describes Jerry hearing music at the local movie theater and then coming home and playing it on the piano. His first music teacher taught him to read music when she noticed he didn’t know how. Afterwards, he participated in vocal and instrumental music at Holtville High School. With the encouragement of his mother, Jerry decided to study music at San Diego State University.

Three days after his college graduation, he was drafted into the United States Army and flown to Fort Riley, Kansas. Following basic training, he became a corporal directing the Fort Riley Chorus for military functions including playing for President Eisenhower. In an unusual turn of events, the Abilene Unified School District contacted Fort Riley needing a music teacher. Jerry was honorably discharged to work for USD 435 at Abilene High School.

Once relocated to Abilene, Jerry enjoyed teaching vocal ensemble, chorus, piano, fifth grade music and producing annual operettas. He assumed he would only stay one year, but the charm of the people of Abilene drew him to stay the remainder of his lifetime. He met his wife, Susan Strom, an Abilene High School physical education teacher in 1971. They were married on January 16, 1973. An adoring husband, Jerry delighted in celebrating their fiftieth wedding anniversary on January 16, 2023.

During his 36 year career as a vocal music and piano teacher, Jerry’s passion was producing high school operettas such as: Sound of Music, Fiddler of the Roof, South Pacific, Paint Your Wagon, Carousel, Bye-Bye Birdie, Wizard of Oz, My Fair Lady, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, The King and I and numerous others. He loved telling colorful stories to his students, and his students enjoyed asking questions to purposely sidetrack Mr. Laudermilk into telling them. Additionally, Jerry served as the choir director for the First Presbyterian Church Choir for 39 years.

Gerald touched the lives of many students and families over the course of his working 
career. Jerry is survived by his wife, Susan Laudermilk, of Abilene, 
Kansas, his daughter, son-in-law and grandson, Allison, Clairfoster and Samuel Browne, of Los Angeles, California, and his son, Travis Laudermilk, of Overland Park, Kansas. As a father and grandfather, he loved playing creatively using silly voices, teaching music, gardening, working on projects around the house, watching the news and discussing current events. His brother, Ronnie, resides in El Cajon, California near his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. His sister, Linda, her children and grandchildren live in Holtville, California. He will be greatly missed by his loved ones who feel so fortunate to have loved a one-of-a-kind brother, husband, father, uncle, grandfather and friend.

SOMC Emergency Room. He was born June 22, 1957, a son of the late James 
and Shelby (Speaks) Davis, and his adopted parents, Leonard and Darlene 
Westberg of Junction City, KS. He earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Theology from Texas Bible 
College in Houston, TX. He loved preaching and his ministry touched 
thousands of lives worldwide. He had a passion for missions and building
 churches internationally, he was fearless in his preaching (even when 
in extreme pain), and dedicated to the apostolic doctrine especially the
 message of Acts 2:38. He was an avid reader, well known for his humor, 
kindness, and generosity. He spent many hours teaching, counseling, and 
praying for those that he had the privilege of pastoring.&nbsp; He was a 
friend to the loner, the misunderstood, and the outcast. Reverend Davis is survived by his wife, Dolly (Williams) Davis; a
 son, Robert E. Davis Jr. and wife Katie of Wheelersburg; a daughter, 
Ashley N. Davis of Wheelersburg; one brother Thomas Davis and wife Amy 
of Hackett, AR; one sister Teri Mills and husband Paul of Dallas, TX; 
grandchildren, Robert “Trey” III, Branson, Adalyn, Josiah, Caysen, 
Shelby, and Garrett. His legacy will continue through his family, his 
church members, and ministers he loved so much. Funeral Services will be
 11:00 AM Tuesday March 28, 2023 at Truth Tabernacle in Wheelersburg

The Rev. Robert E. Davis Sr.

Norma June Gadbury was born October 18, 1928, to Lloyd and Helen 
(Bohlen) Gregory in Moweaqua, Illinois. She graduated as Salutatorian of 
her HS class in 1946. She graduated from Illinois State Normal 
University in 3 years with a degree in Education.

While at college, she played clarinet in the All Girls Marching Band 
and met the love of her life Les Gadbury at ISNU. They were married 
August 13, 1949 in Decatur, IL.

Norma taught Elementary School in Normal before moving to Atwood, IL.

Norma, Les and their family moved to Monticello, Ill., in 1958. Norma kept 
busy as a coaches' wife, homemaker, substitute teacher, and volunteer

Norma enjoyed exercise class, walking, biking, reading, and playing 
bridge. She was a member of the Monticello United Methodist Church. She 
was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.

She is survived by her five children: Greg (Linda) Gadbury of 
Champaign, Gaye (Ron) Kulenkamp of Florida, Gloria (Mike) Cardoni of 
Monticello, Gwen (Jackie) Donnals of Champaign, and Gary (Carol) Gadbury
 of Manhattan, Kansas. Norma also had 14 grandchildren, Julie Gadbury, 
Johanna (Mike) Jaworski, Jessi Gadbury, Lydia (Aaron) Hill, Samuel 
Gadbury, Kathleen Gadbury, Matthew Kulenkamp, John (Crystal) Cardoni, 
Jeffrey (Abby) Cardoni, James (Shelby) Cardoni, Jeremy Donnals, Valerie 
(Mike) Katzenstein; and 14 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband Les, and her brothers Lloyd 
(Joyce) and Mark (Von) Gregory, and two grandchildren Jamie Gady and 
Kara Kulenkamp.

Norma's kind and gentle soul and beautiful smile will always be remembered and missed.

Funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, March 28, 2023,&nbsp; at the Monticello United Methodist Church with visitation for one hour 
before the funeral service. Burial will be at the Monticello Cemetery.

(Bohlen) Gregory in Moweaqua, Illinois. She graduated as Salutatorian of 
her HS class in 1946. She graduated from Illinois State Normal 
University in 3 years with a degree in Education.While at college, she played clarinet in the All Girls Marching Band 
and met the love of her life Les Gadbury at ISNU. They were married 
August 13, 1949 in Decatur, IL.Norma taught Elementary School in Normal before moving to Atwood, IL.Norma, Les and their family moved to Monticello, Ill., in 1958. Norma kept 
busy as a coaches' wife, homemaker, substitute teacher, and volunteer 
with Kirby Auxiliary and Monticello Faith in Action.After Les retired, they enjoyed traveling to see children and

MSG (RET) Willie Clifford Murphy, 82, of Junction City, Kansas, passed 
away on Wednesday, March 22, 2023, at his home surrounded by his loving 
family. 

A funeral will take place 11 a.m. Thursday, March 30, 2023, at 
the Johnson Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Redo Purnell officiating. 
Burial will follow the service with full military honors at Kansas 
Veterans' Cemetery. The family will receive friends and relatives 5-7 
Wednesday evening March 29, 2023, at Johnson Funeral Home. Willie was born July 26, 1940, in Columbus, Georgia, the son of Henry and Annie Mae (Williams) Murphy. Mr.
 Murphy served in the Unites States Army. After his military retirement,
 he worked at Fort Riley in various maintenance and logistics positions.
 He was a member and Past Commander of the V.F.W. Post # 8773 and the 
American Legion Post #45. On July 12, 2008, he married Linda K. Smith-Williams in Junction City, Kansas. Survivors
 include his wife Linda of Junction City, Kansas; six sons, Andrew 
William Murphy, Andrew Williams and Walter Wadford all from Junction 
City, Kansas, Patrick Broadnix, Greg M. Murphy and Carlos Murphy, all 
from Georgia; two daughters, Audrey Ford of Wichita, Kansas, Michelle 
Robinson Murphy of Columbus, Georgia, Lisa Taylor of Tulsa, Oklahoma, 
Lynnetta Mays and Mahogany Wadford both of Houston, Texas; a host of 
grandchildren, nephews, nieces and other relatives and friends. He
 was preceded in death by his parents; ten siblings, Henry Murphy Jr., 
Willie James Murphy, Johnny Lee Murphy, Betty Ann Murphy, Frank Murphy,

Blake E. Herres, 70, of Hoisington, Kansas, passed away March 23, 
2023, surrounded by his family.&nbsp; He was born in Hoisington, Kansas, to 
Mary Ellen “Jill” Herres and James Edward “Ed” Herres on August 13, 
1952.&nbsp; Blake was diagnosed with esophageal cancer in March of 2021 and 
was ready for battle. He was willing to complete any surgery or 
treatment offered to him. Although the battle was eventually lost, he 
fought to the bitter end. Although he had the excitement of seeing 
those loved ones who have passed, he was taken too soon and wanted more 
time with his children and grandchildren.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Blake attended Roosevelt Elementary School, Hoisington Junior High, 
and then graduated from Hoisington High School in 1970 where he 
developed lifelong friendships and an appreciation for learning.&nbsp; 
Growing up as a Kansas State Wildcat fan, he attended Kansas State 
University where he belonged to the Beta Theta Pi fraternity and 
graduated with a Bachelor’s of Pre-Med in 1974.&nbsp; He remained a 
passionate Kansas State University football and men’s and women’s 
basketball fan.&nbsp; Blake worked in the oil field prior to attending the 
University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Dentistry.&nbsp; Blake met Julie
 L. Stone in Manhattan and they married on May 10, 1975.&nbsp; They moved to 
Hoisington in 1979 where Blake started his dental practice which lasted 
until his retirement in the Fall of 2022.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Blake thoroughly enjoyed small-town living where the country was 
always at his doorstep.&nbsp; He was an avid outdoorsman with his favorite 
outdoor time being spent fishing for walleye with his Dad, girls or 
sons-in law, hunting for pheasants and geese, and attending his annual 
turkey hunt in Arkansas or Missouri with his long-time hunting buddies.&nbsp;
 He was an active member of the Hoisington Gun Club.&nbsp; He always took a 
moment to appreciate the fresh air and to take a walk at the farm.&nbsp; He 
made sure that his daughters were taught the value of nature and to 
appreciate their surroundings.&nbsp;

Blake was a volunteer coach in Hoisington ranging from his Pre-Molars
 tee ball teams up through various softball and basketball teams until 
school sports began in 7th Grade.&nbsp; He served on the USD 431 
school board 12 years, including 5 years as President.&nbsp; His school board
 stint involved navigating the school district through the aftermath of 
the Hoisington tornado in 2001.&nbsp; “Once a Cardinal, Always a Cardinal” 
rang true for Blake.&nbsp; His support of the Hoisington Cardinals never 
waned, even after his girls had graduated from high school.&nbsp; He 
frequented as many Cardinal sporting events as time would allow. His 
most recent and maybe most enjoyable hobby was being the color 
commentator on the radio for the Hoisington Cardinals calling games for 
the football and basketball teams.&nbsp; Blake started as the color 
commentator in 2001 and called his last game on December 13, 2022, where 
the Cardinals played Sterling at home.&nbsp; Even after his disease didn’t 
allow him to call any more games, the radio dial was always set to 100.7
 F.M. when the Cardinals were playing.

He instilled in his daughters that as long as you work hard, you can 
play hard too. He took the girls on annual vacations where the he 
introduced them to his love of music making a “pick hits” tape for every
 trip that included his favorite tunes ranging from Gordon Lightfoot, 
The Beatles, bluegrass, rock -and-roll and folk music. Music was always 
playing in the Herres household and permeated throughout the house and 
their many adventures.&nbsp;

He is survived by his children: Sarah J. Linsner (Kevin), Hoisington;
 Hannah R. Herres, Wichita; and Addie L. Baird (Zach), Hoisington.&nbsp; He 
will be forever cherished and remembered by his grandchildren: Ella 
Linsner, Vivien Linsner, Lydia Linsner, Dominic Gloria, Dakota Gloria, 
Halle Baird, Cordell Baird, and Mylee Baird, and one sister, Kimberly A.
 Herres.&nbsp; He is preceded in death by his parents, and Julie L. Herres.

Friends may sign the book 12 - 6 p.m., Sunday, at the funeral home.

Memorial service will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, March 27th, 2023, at 
Concordia Lutheran Church, with Pastor Gary Wolf presiding.&nbsp; Inurnment
