RILEY COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect on drug allegations.

Just before 4p.m. Wednesday, police arrested 39-year-old Angel Morgan of Junction City, at the corner of 4th Street and Leavenworth Street, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

Morgan was arrested on requested charges that include use/possess with the intent to use drug paraphernalia into the human body, possession of stimulant- 1 prior conviction, operate a motor vehicle without a valid license, distribute or possess with the intent to distribute heroin/certain stimulants (3.5-100 grams). 

Morgan met the requirement of a&nbsp; $20,000 bond and is not longer in custody.&nbsp; She has previous convictions that include forgery and for the Sale/distribution/cultivation of opiates, opium, narcotic drugs or designated stimulants;

Junction City woman accused of intent to sell heroin

WABAUNSEE COUNTY —Two people were injured in an accident just before 3:30a.m. Wednesday in Wabaunsee County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2024 Freightliner Cascadia driven by&nbsp;Keegan Schiefelbein, 23, Wichita, was eastbound on Interstate 70 approximately one mile east of Keene-Eskridge Road

The semi overturned due to high wind and came to rest partially in the south ditch and partially in the right lane.

EMS transported Schiefelbein and a passenger Donnavon&nbsp;Schiefelbein, 22, Wichita, to Stormont Vail. Both were properly restrained, according to the KHP.

&nbsp;Lt. Gen. Sean C. Bernabe, Commanding General, III Armored Corps, will host the change of command ceremony, as Meyer relinquishes command to Rone. The Ceremony will bid farewell to Meyer while welcoming Rone and his family to Ft. Riley, and also include a division pass in review followed by a historic cavalry charge from the Commanding General's Mounted Color Guard.

Just before 9:30a.m. Tuesday, police arrested 59-year-old Jeffrey Tinnean of Manhattan on requested charges of of aggravated battery, domestic battery and stalking, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.&nbsp;

This is day 8 of the Kansas Wheat Harvest Reports, brought to you by the Kansas Wheat Commission, Kansas Association of Wheat Growers, Kansas Grain and Feed Association and the Kansas Cooperative Council.

Drew Hubbell, who farms with his dad and uncle near Spearville in Ford County, reports harvest started on June 10, and they still have about a week to go. Fields are wet from recent rains, so they have had to move from field to field to find dry enough wheat. The rains on the mature wheat have taken about 10 to 15 bushels per acre off their yield potential and caused some lodging issues. Some fields have been hailed on up to three times.

Hubbell said they needed one of these rains in April. They had so much hope going into early spring but received no moisture between February and the middle of May.

Overall, though, they are pleased with this year’s harvest. T158 continues to be a workhorse variety for them year after year. Even after the lack of spring moisture, yields are ranging from 15 or 20 bushels per acre to 60 bushels per acre – sometimes within the same field. Test weights, even after several rounds of rain, are still averaging 58 to 59 pounds per bushel, and protein is 12 to 13 percent. Hubbell said there are a lot of 40 to 50 bushel yields in the area.

Jacqueline Leffler, of Lyon County, near Emporia, started harvesting on the 10th of June and just wrapped up Tuesday afternoon. She was excited to report that their wheat has “been yielding phenomenally,” with yields anywhere from 50 to 70 bushels per acre and test weights so high that they had to lighten their loads going to the elevator.&nbsp;

During the spring, they experienced a substantial amount of moisture that often invites stripe rust and disease. They combatted this opportunity for damage with fungicide which paid off resulting in a great wheat crop.&nbsp;

Jacqueline noted a challenge that not just the Lefflers’, but many farmers faced this year was a shortage in good help. She said that, “It seems like the stars have to align to find enough people to get everything done.”&nbsp;

Despite some minor issues, she was excited about a great year for their wheat and was planting soybeans as part of their double cropping system. Lefflers double-crop almost 100% of their acres with soybeans.&nbsp;

For the Berning family near Scott City, in Scott County, this is one of their better harvests.&nbsp;

“This crop was unexpected,” he said, “Maybe some people were expecting their crop to look like this, but we weren’t.”

Starting a week ahead of normal, their yields have been highly variable with their harvested wheat exceeding 70 bushels per acre on dryland; however, with the dry spring conditions, they abandoned just under half of their wheat, which was all continuous behind corn.

Proteins for the Bernings have ranged anywhere from 14 to 15.5 percent on their wheat, with test weights above 62 pounds per bushel.

“We make sure to incorporate T158 every year,” Berning said. “It’s dad’s favorite variety, so we make sure it’s put in the ground every fall.”

Berning is also cutting KS Dallas, Canvas and Tatanka, and is pleasantly surprised with how it is looking.&nbsp;

“It seems we just got lucky this year,” he said, “if you go less than 25 miles north, guys are cutting completely different yields.”

The Berning family is wrapping up harvest and expects to finish up by June 27, just in time to enjoy next week’s holiday weekend.&nbsp;

Steve Clanton of Minneapolis in Ottawa County, started harvest around June 21, which is a week earlier than normal and wrapped up Tuesday evening.&nbsp;

Clanton is seeing yields anywhere from averages of 30 to 50 bushels per acre, which he is describing this year as “strange.”&nbsp;

“Even where I thought there was going to be good wheat, it wasn’t as good as I was expecting it to be,” Clanton said, “It didn’t make sense.”

Test weights ranged anywhere from 59 to 62 pounds per bushel.&nbsp;

The next harvest report will be a special edition on hard white wheat to be published Thursday, June 27, 2024.&nbsp;

Day 8, Kansas Wheat Harvest Report

The
48th Annual Freedom Run Committee is pleased to announce the 2024
Freedom Runner posthumously, Jerry Frakes. 


Jerry
passed away January 11, 2024, at the young age of 83. This honor is
given to Jerry as a nod to the brilliance and spunk he brought to the
Freedom Run. To help celebrate him and his contributions to not only
the race but the community, his family, wife Connie, son Kelly and
daughter Robin, as well as Jerry’s grandson Austin, will join
runners at the start and finish line on race day. 


The
Freedom Runner honor is given to a local runner who stands and/or
stood for community spirit/valued our nation's freedom and who has
demonstrated success in the Freedom Run. 


Jerry
is remembered by representing all of the above, including being
Freedom Run’s Race Director for 30 years. It was his incredible
achievements as an athlete, businessman and community leader that
continue to be spoken about throughout this community since his
passing. 


“What
was synonymous with the name Jerry Frakes was his massive smile,
boisterous laugh and high-powered energy beyond any other human
being,” said Terrah Stroda,
Freedom Run committee member. “If you knew Jerry Frakes, you knew
two things: Coors Distribution and ‘go until you drop.’ 


Jerry
worked alongside Jerry Mathis for many years, coordinating and
crafting what was then called the “Coors Freedom Run” from 1976
until he passed the baton in 2006. 


Known
for his wild and noteworthy American Flag running shorts, Coors logo
on neon sunglasses and loud megaphone, Jerry expertly crafted a
running event that was equal parts competition and community party.
By showcasing high-level athletes, but welcoming recreational runners
just the same, he designed what is now the longstanding tradition of
fun and competition where the finish line will never change and the
route is meant to be fast and exhilarating. 


“When
we asked Connie permission to honor Jerry, she was full of amazing
stories and sent some pretty epic Jerry pictures,” said Stroda. “As
she talked, I was struck with my own early childhood memories of
Jerry. I’ll never forget when I picked up my first Freedom Run race
packet and got the full-on Jerry Frakes firm handshake, ornery jokes
and laughter as he personally handed me my first pair of the
legendary Coors neon glasses for the run.”

48th Annual Freedom Run Committee is pleased to announce the 2024
Freedom Runner posthumously, Jerry Frakes. 
Jerry
passed away January 11, 2024, at the young age of 83. This honor is
given to Jerry as a nod to the brilliance and spunk he brought to the
Freedom Run. To help celebrate him and his contributions to not only
the race but the community, his family, wife Connie, son Kelly and
daughter Robin, as well as Jerry’s grandson Austin, will join
runners at the start and finish line on race day. 
The
Freedom Runner honor is given to a local runner who stands and/or
stood for community spirit/valued our nation's freedom and who has
demonstrated success in the Freedom Run. 
Jerry
is remembered by representing all of the above, including being
Freedom Run’s Race Director for 30 years. It was his incredible
achievements as an athlete, businessman and community leader that
continue to be spoken about throughout this community since his
passing. 
“What
was synonymous with the name Jerry Frakes was his massive smile,
boisterous laugh and high-powered energy beyond any other human
being,” said Terrah Stroda,
Freedom Run committee member. “If you knew Jerry Frakes, you knew
two things: Coors Distribution and ‘go until you drop.’ 
Jerry
worked alongside Jerry Mathis for many years, coordinating and
crafting what was then called the “Coors Freedom Run” from 1976
until he passed the baton in 2006. 
Known
for his wild and noteworthy American Flag running shorts, Coors logo
on neon sunglasses and loud megaphone, Jerry expertly crafted a
running event that was equal parts competition and community party.
By showcasing high-level athletes, but welcoming recreational runners
just the same, he designed what is now the longstanding tradition of
fun and competition where the finish line will never change and the
route is meant to be fast and exhilarating. 
“When
we asked Connie permission to honor Jerry, she was full of amazing
stories and sent some pretty epic Jerry pictures,” said Stroda. “As
she talked, I was struck with my own early childhood memories of
Jerry. I’ll never forget when I picked up my first Freedom Run race
packet and got the full-on Jerry Frakes firm handshake, ornery jokes
and laughter as he personally handed me my first pair of the
legendary Coors neon glasses for the run.”

MANHATTAN — Ten years ago, a group of 11 Chinese students gathered at Kansas State University with the sponsors and organizers of the College of Veterinary Medicine's&nbsp;<a href="https://www.vet.k-state.edu/research/centers-institutes/usccah/scholarship/joint-dvm/">U.S.-China Joint Doctor of Veterinary Medicine Program</a>&nbsp;to share details of their experiences and academic progress while studying in the United States.

This year, the program celebrated its eighth graduating class and 10th homecoming event.

The college's&nbsp;<a href="https://www.vet.k-state.edu/research/centers-institutes/usccah/">U.S.-China Center for Animal Health</a>&nbsp;established the joint veterinary degree program to continue to advance its "One World, One Health" mission.

For each graduating class year, there are four to six Chinese students who enroll at the K-State campus to complete one year of pre-veterinary studies so they can acclimate to studying in the United States. After that year, the students may apply to study for their Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degrees at either K-State or one of three other U.S. veterinary colleges: University of Minnesota, Iowa State University and University of Missouri.

At the homecoming event, recent graduates, current students and friends presented about their experiences in veterinary college. One student's experiences included a close brush with a Kansas weather phenomenon.

"In my fourth year, I learned that I love dental procedures," said Jingwen Peng, a K-State Doctor of Veterinary Medicine graduate. "While on the equine field service, I did dental [exams] on horses, mules and donkeys. Also while on equine field service, I got a bonus view of a tornado before it touched down. It was the one in Westmoreland in late April. We actually reported it and confirmed it [to local weather-tracking authorities]."

Not every graduate had dramatic encounters to share, but they did share profound thoughts about the impact of completing a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree.

"Our program was established with the mission to improve Chinese veterinary medicine education," said Xingy Tang, who earned her veterinary degree at Iowa State University. "Great challenges lie in front of us, but that also comes with great possibilities. I think we have learned from the best, and now is the best time to go back to our country to witness and, more importantly, be part of the growing and developing of veterinary medicine in China."

In addition to Peng and Tang, the May 2024 Doctor of Veterinary Medicine graduates are Xiangyu Lin from Kansas State University and Dr. Cong Zhu from the University of Minnesota. The Chinese graduates of the program will go back to China as associate professors at top Chinese universities.

"The goal of the U.S.-China Joint DVM Program is to train the trainers of Chinese veterinary medicine," said Jishu Shi, professor and director of the U.S.-China Center for Animal Health at the K-State College of Veterinary Medicine. "

This is truly an example of training the future leaders when they go back to China — some of these participants are already leaders."The U.S.-China Center for Animal Health provides scholarships to cover the first year of pre-veterinary tuition and five years of student activities through funding from Zoetis Foundation, Yebio Bioengineering and Banfield Pet Hospital. The China Scholarship Council supports four years of DVM tuition and five years of living stipends.In addition to the recent graduates, the homecoming event included students currently in the program, who each gave a status report on their activities over the last school year. There were four students who just finished their pre-veterinary studies at K-State and 12 students currently attending the four universities in the program: Kansas State University, the University of Missouri, University of Minnesota and Iowa State University.The event also included administrators from each of the schools, plus two special guests. Wafaa Mamilli, executive vice president and chief digital and technology officer and group president of Brazil and Precision Animal Health for Zoetis, presented a leadership seminar on the first day of the homecoming event. Molly McAlister, chief medical officer at Mars Veterinary Health, gave a leadership seminar on the second day.Representatives included Erin Burton, associate dean, University of Minnesota; Jared Danielson, associate dean, Iowa State University; Shun Chen, dean, Sichuan Agricultural University; Grant Chapman, associate provost, K-State; Richard Goldstein, global chief medical officer, and Nicole Hainer, R&amp;D leader for Asia/Pacific, both from Zoetis; and Lori Teller, immediate-past president, and David Granstrom, assistant executive vice president, both from the American Veterinary Medical Association.

US-China joint veterinary program at K-State celebrates eighth graduating class, 10th annual homecoming event

MANHATTAN — Imagine wanting to become a basketball player but only being able to read about the theory of dribbling and shooting, never or only rarely touching a basketball.

Or wanting to become a concert pianist but never feeling the weight of a single key or hearing the harmonic ring from it rebounding against a tightly wound set of piano strings.

<a href="https://www.math.ksu.edu/~dav/">Dave Auckly</a>&nbsp;doesn't think so. That's why he and several other Kansas State University mathematics faculty and staff collaborate with the&nbsp;<a href="https://navajomathcircles.org/">Navajo Nation Math Circles</a>&nbsp;on a mission to inspire a love and appreciation of math in preK to high school students and help them find the joy in solving puzzles, particularly in Indigenous communities in Auckly's home state of Arizona.

Since 2012, Auckly has been director of the Navajo Nation Math Circles, an outreach program that brings in 80 to 100 visitors from around the U.S. and the world to help share their talents and love for math.

The program is a mixture of outreach visits and workshops in schools and other community centers by mathematicians during the school year. But one of the program's most significant outreach services is a two-week summer camp that hosts dozens of middle and high school students.

"People come and contribute their time, effort and sometimes money to make what can be a very isolated place into something magical for the students," Auckly said.

<a href="https://mathcircles.org/about/">Math circles</a>, Auckly said, are a concept that dates back a century in eastern Europe, when Soviet leaders wanted to develop the next generation of great mathematicians, scientists and engineers.

The point is to learn to face a problem, to think through it and then to understand, Auckly said — to put in practice the math skills they might have read or talked about in school.

"Math circles are programs where a group of people — and they don't need to be the same grade level — come together to explore mathematics because they want to, and because it's fun," Auckly said.

The concept later spread to other parts of Europe, especially countries where school ends very early in the afternoon. Math circles served as a way for people with common interests to get together, the same way others might gather to make informal music or play sports.

"It's been going for 100 years, and you see it in the resulting level of mathematics that comes from these groups," Auckly said.

Math circles were slower to grow in the U.S., but Auckly, who has been involved in math outreach his entire career, is one of many who wanted to help expand the concept.

From 2009 to 2012, he served as associate director of the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.slmath.org/">Mathematical Sciences Research Institute</a>&nbsp;— one of a handful of National Science Foundation-funded math research institutes. While the institute undertook and encouraged math research, it also had a significant outreach portfolio, and Auckly used his time at the institute to grow the concept of math circles. He said that when he started in 2009, there were about 20 math circles around the U.S.

By the time he left three years later, there were about 150.

Granted, the job of mathematician will hardly make most kindergarteners' top five most-desired careers. But the point of a math circle isn't to funnel students into degrees or jobs solving equations on dusty chalkboards.

The problems and puzzles that students might encounter in a math circle are all meant to have a low floor, so that everyone can at least understand the question. Think puzzles, toys and activities like Rubik's cubes and sudoku.

However, the puzzles and activities gradually become deeper, so students begin seeing "beautiful patterns and things that are surprising and engaging and thought-provoking."

"It's really captivating for a lot of people," Auckly said. "You need to have an appropriate mix in math where people can see the beauty, the exploration and the artistic elements of the field. Sure, there are some algorithms that people do need to master to understand and learn more. But you need to have both kinds of appreciation."

During his time at the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute, Auckly had been assisting with math competitions in the San Francisco Bay Area when someone knocked on his office door and changed his life.

It was this remarkable woman,&nbsp;<a href="https://mathcircles.org/facilitator/tatiana-shubin/">Tatiana Shubin</a>&nbsp;— whom Auckly described as a wonderful mathematician — who came to him with the idea to do math outreach in the American Southwest.

She had been doing this type of work already, both in her home country in the former Soviet Union and in her new home in the U.S., where among other things she created the first math circle for teachers.

The pair used their connections to meet people and understand the needs of the Navajo Nation. The sovereign tribe — spanning much of the northeastern corner of Arizona and parts of New Mexico and Utah — faces many of the challenges that many rural U.S. states do, particularly poverty and low access to resources such as education and internet connectivity.

"For the longest time, I thought about the statistic that about a third of Navajo households did not have electricity," Auckly said. "More probably have it now, since there have been big electrification efforts in the years since, but electricity, as well as the internet, have struggled to serve the community."

After months of meeting with leaders and local teachers across the nation, Auckly and Shubin gained trust and buy-in from communities. In 2013, the program ran its first math festival and first summer camp.

"After we started, the students couldn't get enough," Auckly said. "In the early days, about half of the students would come back, and they would bring friends, and then other friends would hear about it, and then their teachers would. Word-of-mouth was an important mechanism for us back then, as it is today."

Today, the Navajo Nation Math Circles' summer camp hosts about 30 to 50 students each year, although Auckly wants to continue growing the camps and outreach. Dozens of math visitors, like K-State math professors Kim Klinger-Logan and Misha Mazin and others at institutions around the world, help facilitate math lessons and activities at the camp and in workshops.

The main challenge for the program is in logistics, especially for outreach beyond the summer camps. A school might request Auckly or another speaker to come visit with a week's notice, but it's not easy to arrange hundreds of miles of travel on short notice.

They're able to work closely with students and inspire an appreciation, or maybe even love, for a subject that they didn't have before.

Dillons adds new rewards cash benefit

This is day 7 of the Kansas Wheat Harvest Reports, brought to you by the Kansas Wheat Commission, Kansas Association of Wheat Growers, Kansas Grain and Feed Association and the Kansas Cooperative Council.

According to the June 23, 2024 USDA/NASS Kansas Crop Progress and Condition Report, winter wheat harvested was 53%, well ahead of 17% last year and 25% for the five-year average. Winter wheat mature was 94%, well ahead of 53% last year and 65% average. Kansas winter wheat condition rated 8% very poor, 15% poor, 35% fair, 36% good and 6% excellent.

Wheat harvest is just getting started in northwest Kansas, while south central areas are wrapping things up after last week's rains.

The central parts of Kansas — from Dodge City to Great Bend to Hutchinson and beyond — were hit hard with the drought this spring.

After missing rain during most of the growing season, John Hildebrand of Stafford reports rain finally came a couple weeks ago — after the wheat was ripe, which delayed the beginning of harvest. The Hildebrands were able to start harvest on June 13 and were in the home stretch on the afternoon of June 24.

Overall, it was a hard year, due to lack of moisture and weed pressure.

“We have weed pressure in our area,” Hildebrand said. “Thin stands and rain before harvest is the perfect recipe for weeds to come through.”

Hildebrand reports yields to be about the same as last year, which was also below average. Test weights range from 56 pounds per bushel to 59 pounds per bushel.

In Rice County, near Chase, Doug Keesling says this year's crop is three times better than last year; however, last year's yields were only in the single digits.

“In general, this wasn’t a perfect crop, but this was the best crop we’ve been able to harvest in the past three years,” Keesling said, “We need to be thankful for the blessings that we have, and this year we were able to get a decent harvest.” Two-thirds of his acres last year were abandoned due to drought.

Keesling farms in both Rice and Barton counties and his best-performing wheat variety, Bob Dole, yielded an average of 25 bushels per acre, had a test weight of 57 pounds per bushel and had an average of 13.5% protein this year.

Keesling started cutting his wheat on June 7 and only has a mud spot left before he wraps up. While wrapping up wheat harvest, he still has some catching up to do with his double crop sorghum and soybeans.

“We are able to plant a lot faster than we’re able to spray our double crop,” he said. “The wind storms we had last week and the strong winds lately have put a pause on us spraying; otherwise, we’d be done double-cropping.”

Mike Jordan of Beloit in Mitchell County got his combines rolling on June 14 and is about halfway done with harvest. He reported a wide range of yields that will probably result in an overall average harvest for the year. After a year of sparse rain in his area, Jordan was pleasantly surprised as he started cutting.

“The wheat is better than it looks, which is a tribute to the genetics,” Jordan said, “When we finally got the rain this spring, we got the bushels there.”

He is hoping for an average of 50 bushels per acre with conditions of fields on both ends of the spectrum. Some of the lower-yielding fields had a delayed start and did not come up until January; luckily there was some late rain that rescued those fields. He reported proteins ranging from 12 percent to 15 percent and test weights around 61 pounds per bushel. Jordan said his star variety was Westbred’s WB 4401.

TOPEKA –&nbsp;While ticks and mosquitoes are a natural part of our environment, it is important to know that some may transmit harmful diseases. The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) tracks illnesses caused by ticks and mosquitoes, and as of May 29, 2024, has received over 200 laboratory reports of tickborne diseases. Additionally, KDHE has received several reports of tick bites and complaints of high numbers of ticks, which indicates that tick activity and density are increasing and are occurring earlier in the season this year.

Numerous tickborne diseases caused by bacteria are present in Kansas. These include Ehrlichiosis, Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever and other Spotted Fever Group Rickettsioses (SFGR), and Tularemia. Two rare tickborne viruses, Heartland virus and Bourbon virus, have also been identified in Kansas in both humans and ticks. All of these tickborne diseases are transmitted by the Lone Star tick, the most abundant tick in Kansas. Lone Star ticks can be found widely throughout at least the eastern two-thirds of the state in a variety of habitats and are aggressive human biters. This year alone, KDHE has investigated several tickborne disease cases with severe health outcomes, including hospitalizations due to Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever and Tularemia, and a fatal case of Bourbon virus.

“Vector-borne diseases, both those that are transmitted by ticks and those transmitted by mosquitoes are extremely active this year,”&nbsp;Dr. Erin Petro, KDHE State Public Health Veterinarian, said. “I really encourage people to take the risk of vector-borne diseases seriously and take personal protective measures for themselves and their pets to reduce their chance of acquiring an illness from a tick or mosquito bite. We’re also seeing emerging tick-associated conditions, like Alpha-gal syndrome, which can have lifelong consequences for those affected, which is why bite prevention is so important.”

In addition to increased tickborne diseases being reported to KDHE, there have been increased case reports of West Nile Virus (WNV), which is a reportable disease. While WNV cases occur every year in Kansas, the concerning trend this year is how early it’s being seen. Cases of WNV typically start in late July to early August. However, KDHE has already had two cases of WNV reported.

These cases serve as an important reminder to take precautions as you enjoy the outdoors this summer. Ticks are commonly found at the edge of trails, on tall grasses and in wooded, shaded areas. Mosquitoes are often more common at dawn and dusk and can breed in small amounts of standing water.

CLOUD COUNTY—A Manhattan man died in an accident just before 10p.m. Sunday in Cloud County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2006 Ford Econoline van driven by Marco&nbsp;Lopez, 47, Kansas City, Missouri, was westbound on U.S. 24 five and one half miles west of Miltonvale.

The van traveled into the eastbound lane and struck a 2015 Yamaha motorcycle driven by James Ray&nbsp; Dille, 63, Manhattan. After impact the motorcycle came to rest in the south ditch. The van entered the south ditch, struck a power pole and came to rest in a field.

Dille was pronounced dead at the scene and was transported Chaput-Buoy Funeral Home. Lopez and two passengers in the van were not injured.&nbsp; Dille was not wearing a helmet, according to the KHP.

MANHATTAN — Kansas State University researchers and representatives of Kansas Wheat have published updated findings on the value of feeding wheat to pigs.

What they’ve found is good news for swine producers and wheat growers.

“Our data collected from 2014 to 2020 suggests that wheat’s mean energy content is 99% and 98% of corn for digestible energy and metabolizable energy, respectively” said Joel DeRouchey, a swine specialist for K-State Research and Extension.

Bottom line: Wheat can be used at a similar rate as corn in those areas where wheat is available, without a major decrease in the diet energy density.

“The use of wheat co-products for the milling industry is a common practice in feeding livestock,” DeRouchey said. “For wheat, there are many different classifications of co-products, such as wheat middlings, wheat millrun, wheat shorts and wheat red dog.”

K-State formed a partnership with Kansas Wheat to update what is known about the nutritional value of wheat and wheat co-products.

“Wheat milling co-products – including bran, middlings and shorts – provide good nutritional value,” said Aaron Harries, the vice president of research and operations for Kansas Wheat. “In particular, those products have high phosphorus content, which results in less supplemental phosphorus in the diet, and reduced costs for the producer.”

According to DeRouchey, key findings in the fact sheets include:

• Wheat contains higher levels of crude protein and amino acids compared to other cereal grains. “This allows for less soybean meal inclusion in the diet.

• Wheat’s standardized ileal digestibility of amino acids is similar to corn, but greater than barley and sorghum,” DeRouchey said.

• The phosphorus content of wheat is 0.27%, and has very high digestible phosphorus because it contains intrinsic phytase.

• Pelleted wheat diets have been found to have significantly greater pellet durability index, as much as 33.1% compared to corn-based diets. “Even if wheat is not used as the main cereal grain (in a swine diet), it can be incorporated into diets as a pelleting aid,” DeRouchey said.

Harries notes that the updated findings on feeding wheat to swine “provides valuable new information for swine feeders.”

“It allows farmers to consider swine feeding as an alternative marketplace for their wheat,” he said.

The passenger identified as Ray G.&nbsp;Palenske, 74, Lenexa, was ejected and died of his injuries at the scene. Brian Palenske was not injured.&nbsp; &nbsp;The KHP released no additional details.
