Around 3:30 pm, Emergency personnel were called at to westbound Interstate 70 near mile marker 320 for a single vehicle rollover crash.

The driver, Cynthia Carmack, 54, of Laguna Niguel, California, lost control of the 2022 Audi.

The Audi left the roadway, to the north, for an unknown reason, crashing into the rock embankment before the car rolled several times.

The vehicle came to a stop on the roof, and Carmack was stuck in the vehicle by her seatbelt until emergency crews arrived.

According to Kansas Highway Patrol troopers on the scene, the vehicle caught fire during or shortly after the crash.

Carmack was taken to an area hospital by LifeStar for treatment of suspected serious &nbsp;injuries.

Riley County Fire District #1, Wabaunsee County Fire, and Alma City Fire all responded to extinguish the grassfire caused by the crash.

Riley County Police Department and Wabaunsee County Sheriff's Office assisted with traffic control through the crash area.

MANHATTAN - Artist and experimental filmmaker, David Lebrun has loaned his series, Transfigurations: Reanimating the Past, to the Marianna Kistler Beach Museum.&nbsp;

The exhibit contains high resolution photographs taken by Lebrun and his creative team during their world travels studying and capturing the beauty of centuries-old sculptures of the Hindu deities Shiva and Vishnu, as well as attendants to Vishnu.&nbsp;

The photographs are animated using software to transition between the photographs, giving way to the subtle differences between each of the photographed pieces.&nbsp;

The exhibit contains 4 video screens showing the transformations between the photographs with specially composed music by composer Yuval Ron plays within the exhibit.&nbsp;

"The goal is to not make it look like something digital, even though I'm using digital tools to make it feel completely natural. Like it's a, it's a real thing that any point when you stop in the animation, you would look like a real sculpture. And when you bring them all together, it just feels like a real sculpture alive and breathing." Transfigurations Project, director, David Lebrun says.&nbsp;

A touchscreen outside the exhibit gives visitors the opportunity to examine each photograph in the exhibit and learn more about the characteristics of each artwork used in the animations.&nbsp;

"And I'll say to the original photographs of Vishnu were taken over the course of a month of traveling in India. You can see the travel route in our exploration station, but the research and photography is is also part of that very long process to meet each and every one. So, and with Shiva, it wasn't a month of photography, but rather some photography from museums."&nbsp;Transfigurations Project, producer, Rosie Guthrie says.&nbsp;

On Thursday, October 20, at 5:30pm, the Beach Museum of Art will celebrate Diwali, a major festival of India that symbolizes the victory of light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance.&nbsp;

There will be multiple activities along with music, and specialty Diwali treats to enjoy.

Beach Museum exhibit reimagines the Ancient Art of India

RILEY COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a violent attack in Manhattan.

Just after 4:30p.m. Tuesday, officers filed a report for aggravated battery in the 400 block of Leavenworth Street in Manhattan. 

A 34-year-old man reported a known 45-year-old man stabbed him on an unspecified date.

Additional details on the incident were not released by RCPD.

Riley County Arrest Report October 19

OGDEN - Around noon on Tuesday, October 18th, fire crews were dispatched to a house fire in the 200 block of William Drive in Ogden.

Manhattan Fire Department arrived on scene first, followed by volunteers with Riley County Fire District #1, and found a chicken coop on fire, and the fire had spread to the outer wall of the house.

Crews had the fire under control within 15 minutes, and spent additional time making sure fire had not spread into the attic and extinguishing any hot spots.

There were no injuries reported, however, one chicken died as a result of the fire, several chickens escaped unharmed.

Fifteen firefighters from Riley County Fire District #1 and eight firefighters from Manhattan Fire Department responded to the fire.

The home sustained major smoke damage as well as significant fire damage to two rooms. The preliminary damage estimate is $200,000 to the structure and contents

Riley County EMS and Riley County Police Department were on scene as mutual aid.

Gridiron Glory: Congratulations Aubrey Sams!

MANHATTAN - More than 80 years after being killed while serving on the USS California, Seaman Second Class Pete Turk's repatriated remains were finally laid to rest at the Kansas Veterans' Cemetery at Fort Riley in Manhattan.&nbsp;

Born in Roseland Kansas, Turk enlisted in the US Navy on September 24, 1940 in Kansas City, Missouri at the age of 19.&nbsp;

On November 25, 1940, Turk reported for duty aboard the USS California, a flagship of the Battle Force.&nbsp;

On December 7th, 1941, the USS California was attacked by Japanese forces while moored at Pearl Harbor.&nbsp;

One hundred and four sailors and Marines, including Turk, were lost, following the severe damage caused by multiple torpedoes and bombs hitting the USS California.&nbsp;

In 2018, the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency began to exhume the unknown remains associated with the USS California and had them reexamined using updated forensic technology and circumstantial evidence to identify the remains of Seaman Second Class Turk.&nbsp;

"The full counting mission of the Defense P.O.W. and Accountability Agency. Is there. That's their primary goal, is to account for every American service member that is unaccounted for in every foreign war that we served in. We take this very seriously in the VFW and support that program and definitely encourage Congress to support D.P.A.A. with funding to, to bring home every one of our service members." Kansas VFW P.O.W. M.I.A. chair, David Babin says.&nbsp;

Turk was honored with a funeral service with military honors and a final resting place in the Kansas Veterans' Cemetery at Fort Riley in Manhattan.&nbsp;

"As the Kansas VFW P.O.W. M.I.A. chair, I strive to not only have the VFW post VFW as participate in these programs, I encourage the community to, to participate and to spread awareness to the public that we never forget a fallen comrade and that we will bring them all home, no matter how long it takes." Babin says.&nbsp;

Seaman Second Class Turk's remains were escorted by motorcycle riders from the American Legion Post 45 Junction City.

MARSHALL COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities and USD 364 officials are investigating a student who allegedly had a gun on campus.

On Friday, police&nbsp;responded to Marysville High School after an observant teacher overheard a student claiming to have a firearm in his vehicle, according to a media release.

  Numerous officers were dispatched and one student was taken into custody immediately. 

 No firearms were located in the vehicle.  Due to the student's age, police released no other information. 

Police said they are thankful for the teacher immediately reporting the incident and the school district contacting law enforcement immediately.

A signing project in Riley County will begin on Wednesday, weather permitting.&nbsp;According to the Kansas Department of Transportation, contractors will replace signs located along U.S.&nbsp;24, U.S. 77, K-18, K-82, K-113, K-114 and K-177.

Advanced signing and cones will mark the active work zone. Impacts to motorists should be minimal, however, a single lane reduction may occur on some of the four-lane roadways. Traffic will merge to the open lane at those times.

Work will take place Monday through Friday during daylight hours and is expected to be complete by June 2023.

Cooper Construction, of Emporia, is the contractor on the $1.8 million project.

Riley County highway sign project begins Wednesday

Three finalists for the Riley County Police Department (RCPD) Director position, have been announced by the Riley County Law Enforcement Agency (Law Board).

The Law Board received 15 applications for the position and plans to name a director by December 1, 2022.

The three finalists, in alphabetical order, are:

On Thursday, October 27, 2022, a public forum will be held from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm at the Manhattan Fire Department Headquarters, at 2000 Denison Avenue.

The finalists will make presentations, followed by a question and answer session.

The community is invited to attend, and will have the opportunity to submit agency-relate questions, which will be read by a moderator. Due to time limits, there may not be time to answer all questions.

National Weather Service issues freeze warning for Monday night

During the first week of October, two structure fires in Manhattan were extinguished by fire sprinkler systems before firefighters arrived on scene.&nbsp;

On Monday, October 3rd, Manhattan Fire Department was dispatched to 615 N. 12th Street, Kite's Bar and Grill, on the report of a structure fire.

A Riley County Police Department officer discovered the fire alarm sounding, and smoke in the building.&nbsp;Prior to the arrival of firefighters, occupants of the apartments above the restaurant evacuated the building.

When fire crews arrived they found the fire had been extinguished by the fire sprinkler system.&nbsp;

The cause of the fire was determined to be rags used to wipe up cooking oil that spontaneously ignited. The loss was estimated at $3,000. The restaurant was cleaned and able to reopen for business the next day.

Kite's Bar and Grill provided a copy of the security video(below) showing the transition of the rags from soldering, to flames, to the sprinkler system suppressing the fire; to the fire fighters arriving on scene.

The second fire extinguished by a fire sprinkler system happened on Saturday, October 8th at 1850 Claflin Road.

Fire crews arrived on the scene of the reported structure fire and found the third floor apartment fire was extinguished by the fire sprinkler system.

The cause of the fire was determined to be unattended cooking. Damage was estimated at $6,000.

The building's occupants were able to return to the building later that day following cleanup of the damage.

Fire sprinkler systems extinguish 2 fires in MHK

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — If you got an extension on the deadline to file your 2021 tax return, the IRS wants to remind you, your time is almost up.

"For those folks who got a six month extension, the deadline to file normally would be October 15," said Michael Devine with the IRS. "Since that's on a weekend, it goes to the next business day, which this year is Monday, October 17. That is the day that you need to file your tax return and avoid any chance of being tagged with a failure to file penalty."

The failure to file penalty&nbsp;is 5% of the unpaid taxes for each month or part of a month that a tax return is late.

"It needs to be in the system by midnight on Monday, so that you don't have to worry about any penalties," Devine said. "You can do it yourself. There's a lot of ways to do that. <a href="https://www.irs.gov/filing/free-file-do-your-federal-taxes-for-free">IRS Free File</a>&nbsp;is still available. Just go to IRS.gov. Right at the top, the first box you see is File Your Taxes for Free. If you made less than $73,000, you can pick a company that you want to do your taxes, put all the information in, and it will go."&nbsp;

MORRIS COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities including the FBI conducted an intensive investigation Wednesday a man accused in&nbsp; the robbery at Bank of the Flint Hills, 101 E MacKenzie Street in White City, according to the Morris County Sheriff.

Just after 10p.m. Wednesday, police captured 35-year-old Christopher J. Callaham of Junction City at a motel in Junction City.&nbsp;

Just after 10a.m. Wednesday, a man with a handgun and wearing a mask entered the Bank of the Flint Hills and demanded money from a clerk, according to the Morris County Sheriff's office.

The man was described as a white male with dark colored hair. He was wearing a dark blue hooded sweatshirt, blue jeans and brown boots. He left the bank with an undisclosed amount of cash and ran into a residential neighborhood south of the bank.

Officers from Council Grove and deputies from the Morris County Sheriff's office began searching for the suspect. School in White City were placed on lockdown.&nbsp; There were no injuries reported at the bank.

Callaham is being held in Geary County on a felony arrest warrant for aggravated robbery and&nbsp; two additional requested drug charges, according to online booking records.

The tournament is named to honor former K-State Lacrosse Head Coach, Donnie Tillar.

<a href="https://www.steel-hearts.org/usma-1988/1lt-donnie-preston-tillar-iii">1LT Donaldson "Donnie" Preston Tillar III</a> was the Head Lacrosse Coach at Kansas State University, while stationed at Fort Riley, prior to being deployed during Operation Desert Storm.

<a href="https://www.facebook.com/NationalDesertStormWarMemorial/posts/1lt-donnie-tillar-iii-pictured-here-died-on-feb-27-1991-during-operation-desert-/1134338160029542/">Tillar</a> was was killed in action on February 27, 1991, while serving the US Army as a Black Hawk Helicopter Pilot.

Following a nearly 2 year shutdown during the COVID-19 pandemic, the <a href="https://www.instagram.com/kstatemenslax/">K-State Lacrosse</a> team has spent the last 18 months rebuilding the team.

The team had six players remaining when they returned to practices, and they have grown to nearly 30 team members.

The K-State Lacrosse program is a club sport, which means it is affiliated with the University, but receives no direct funding or support from the University.

The student-athletes will spend the day playing in matches and at the end of the tournament the team will be going through the stands cleaning up before they get to call it a night.

The Robert E. And Patricia Schmidt Foundation recently donated $25,000 to the American Red Cross to help support recovery efforts following Hurricane Ian.

The Red Cross has dispatched multiple vehicles, which will most likely be deployed for weeks, and the foundation's gift will help support the volunteers manning the vehicles and help restock supplies.

Schmidt Foundation gift will aid Ian recovery efforts

RILEY COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a car theft in Riley County and have a suspect in custody.

Just after 9p.m. Tuesday, officers filed a report for theft in the 400 block of Clydesdale Drive in Ogden, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

&nbsp;A 24-year-old woman and Cornerstone of Care reported a 14-year-old male suspect stole a white 2020 Hyundai Elantra. 

The estimated total loss associated with this case is approximately $20,000. The car was later recovered in Junction City and the suspect was taken into custody by the Junction City Police Department.

A 23-year-old man reported his 1911 A1 Tanker 45ACP handgun was stolen from the trunk of his car on October 8, 2022 while in the parking lot of Dirty Dawgs.

RILEY COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a registered sex offender on multiple charges after a weekend arrest.

On October 7, police arrested Cedrick Wilson, 41, of Manhattan for aggravated burglary, possession of an opiate, lewd and lascivious behavior, and violation of offender registration, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

 The aggravated burglary charge stems from an October 6, 2022, incident when it was reported Wilson entered a 29-year-old woman's residence in the 2000 block of Hayes Drive and exposed himself in front of her.

The lewd and lascivious behavior charge stems from an October 2, 2022, incident. when it was reported Wilson masturbated inside the Bourbon and Baker restaurant, 312 Poyntz in Manhattan.

The possession of an opiate charge stems from Wilson being found in possession of an opiate during his arrest on October 7.

The violation of offender registration charge comes from the incidents at the restaurant and at the woman's residence.&nbsp; They are violations of his offender registration, according to the RCPD.

Wilson has a 1997 conviction for rape and indecent exposure in Oklahoma involving a 16-year-old victiim, according to the sex offender registry.

Wison remains confined in the Riley County Jail on a total bond of $60,000.

RCPD: Kansas sex offender accused of multiple crimes

RILEY COUNTY—A Kansas man was injured in an accident just before 1p.m. Monday in Riley County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2019 Suzuki&nbsp;Haybusa driven by George Emil Turner, 23, Fort Riley, was northbound on McDowell Creek Road two miles north of Interstate 70.

RILEY COUNTY—A Kansas man was injured in an accident just before 1p.m. Monday in Riley County.The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2019 Suzuki&nbsp;Haybusa driven by George Emil Turner, 23, Fort Riley, was northbound on McDowell Creek Road two miles north of Interstate 70.The driver&nbsp; failed to negotiate a right hand curve. The motorcycle entered the west ditch, struck an embankment and the rider was ejected.EMS transported Turner to Via Christi in Manhattan. He was wearing a helmet and gloves, according to the KHP.
