MANHATTAN - On Friday, Sinkers Lounge in Manhattan celebrated it's grand opening with a ribbon cutting ceremony.

Members from Sinkers Lounge, and parent company Swell Spark gathered to celebrate the opening of it's newest location.

Sinkers Lounge is an indoor mini-golf and tabletop golf venue with a full-service menu and cocktail bar.

The mini-golf course features 9 holes of classic mini-golf, while the Tabletop golf is a mashup of mini-golf and billiards.

Sinkers Lounge offers both reserved 'tee times' and walk-in availability.

WASHINGTON COUNTY —One person died in an accident just after 4:30p.m. Friday in Washington County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 1986 GMC S pickup driven by Hunter L.&nbsp;Wohlbrandt, 23, Wakefield, was southbound on Kansas 119 at Kansas 9 one mile South of Greenleaf.

The driver failed to stop at a stop sign prior to entering the intersection. A 2002 Chevy Tahoe driven by Lindsay I. Gray, 15, Waterville, struck the pickup.

EMS transported Wohlbrandt to&nbsp;Bryan Medical Center West Campus in Lincoln where he died. EMS transported Gray and a passenger Brian T. Gray, 47, Waterville, to the Washington County Hospital. Wohlbrandt was not wearing a seat belt, according to the KHP.

On Thursday night, Junction City senior and former Blue Jay football player Michael Boganowski, was presented a U.S. Army Bowl Jersey and officially accepted the invitation to play in the bowl game.

The chairman and founder of the U.S. Army Bowl, Mr. Rich McGuiness, announced that Boganowski is one of just 80 players that were selected to play in this game.

McGuiness spoke about what led to Boganowski’s selection and what makes him an elite football player. “What excites us is he can tackle, he can cover, and his athleticism, in my mind, gives him a lot of potential to be successful at the next level,” McGuinness said.

With the selection, Michael Boganowski is the first Junction City High School athlete to compete in the U.S. Army Bowl. “With it being the Army Bowl, and Junction City being an Army Community, I think it’s a great opportunity for an army kid to play in the bowl,” Boganowski said.

Along with several family and friends in attendance, Junction City head football coach Randall Zimmerman was present and spoke to the crowd. Zimmerman applauded Boganowski for being a four-year starter at Junction City High School and noted that throughout his career, Boganowski tallied 265 total tackles, six interceptions and had ten offensive touchdowns his senior season.

The U.S. Army Bowl will be played in Frisco, Texas, on December 18 at 7:00 p.m.

The game will be televised nationally on ESPN.

Michael Boganowski officially accepts Army Bowl Invitation

MANHATTAN - Just after noon on Friday, December 8th, Kansas State University President Richard Linton released a statement to the community about the recent decision by the University and the Athletic Department to release Nae'Quan Tomlin from the Men's Basketball team.

I am grateful to have the opportunity to address our university community — students, faculty, staff, alumni, fans and friends — regarding the questions and sentiments permeating social media and other events in recent days. Your passion demonstrates your interest in this university’s future, and we must all be committed to doing what is best for K-State. I want you to know that I am also committed to sharing our processes with transparency in regard to how we approach developing every student to meet the standards of this university.&nbsp;&nbsp;

We share a common aspiration to develop young men and women to make our world a better place. Our faculty, staff, coaches and administrators work every day to teach, guide, mentor and, at times, hold accountable members of our community. I recognize that leaders are often called upon to make difficult decisions. Some difficult decisions are very visible; others are not. Some of the policies that govern our decision-making are widely understood, yet again, others are not. As difficult decisions are made, it is also important that we have a sense of community and accountability.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The principal question at the heart of Nae’Qwan Tomlin’s release from the men’s basketball team seems to be around understanding the role a university president plays in student-athlete conduct decisions. I want to take the opportunity to outline the policy governing this process in full transparency.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The NCAA Board of Governors has required each member institution to adopt a “serious misconduct policy” covering a number of potential allegations, including Title IX. Under the university’s serious misconduct policy, the university president is involved in collaboration with the athletic director and head coach when making a final decision concerning a student-athlete’s conduct and team membership.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The decision to release Nae’Qwan from the men’s basketball team was made in full compliance with all applicable policies. When decisions like this are made, a range of factors are considered, including the entire history of a student athlete’s behavior.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The reporting that this decision was made solely due to an incident at a bar in Aggieville is not accurate.&nbsp;&nbsp;

There remains much we cannot share with the university community under federal laws, namely FERPA, which protects a student’s right to privacy while attending a university. I know this is difficult, as you want to understand all that has transpired. But in the absence of being able to share any more specifics, I hope that the details I am sharing today help bring resolution to any lingering questions.&nbsp;

I want you to know that our university and our athletics department are unified. There is no “us” versus “them." Together, we are One K-State. The relationship between the university, athletics and the K-State community at large is special, and I will never take it for granted.&nbsp;

MANHATTAN - The Kansas World Language Association(KSWLA) has elected Mrs. Carmen Elizabeth Wilson as the 2023-2024 Vice President.

Wilson teaches Spanish at Manhattan High School.

As Vice President, Wilson will serve a three-year term which includes a learning year as Vice President, a conference-planning year as President and a year fulfilling mentor duties as Past President.

In this role, Wilson will provide advocacy for world languages, leadership skills, and make connections with leaders across the state and country.

“We are pleased to have Mrs. Wilson as part of our organization and we look forward to all that she will bring to KSWLA as a part of our Executive Board,” said KSWLA President Dr. Marta Silva.

🎙: Little Apple Bites: A Plate Full of Hot Community Meals

MANHATTAN (AP) — Kansas State forward Nae'Qwan Tomlin was dismissed from the team late Wednesday, more than a month after his arrest for disorderly conduct, triggering a wave of criticism aimed at the school administration from some fans.

K-State basketball coach Jerome Tang spoke to the K-State community on social media Thursday evening.

Tomlin averaged 10.4 points in 36 games last season, and was a big part of the Wildcats' surprise run to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament. He considered turning pro after the season but ultimately decided to return to the program.

He was arrested following a bar fight in October, and Kansas State coach Jerome Tang immediately suspended him “for not living up to the expectations of our players.” But as the season progressed, many Kansas State fans were antsy for Tomlin's return to the team, even chanting his name during an overtime win against Villanova this week.

As some fans began calling and emailing administrators, including Kansas State president Richard Linton, athletic director Gene Taylor finally issued a statement that said Tomlin “will no longer be able to continue with the K-State men's basketball team."

“This decision was not made lightly by me,” he said, "but it is the decision warranted by the circumstances that brought it to bear.”

Taylor said he had been “monitoring the situation” along with Tang but declined to share any specifics of the case, citing federal privacy laws. That includes whether there were factors beyond the initial bar fight that led to his decision.

Earlier in the day, Tomlin posted on Instagram the lyrics from a song that said: “I want to be free, free, free.” The 6-foot-10 forward is scheduled to graduate at the semester, and because he has yet to play for the Wildcats this season, Tomlin could transfer to another school and play for the remainder of the season.

“Allowing for space and time is critical,” Taylor said, "but in today’s digital age, that unfortunately can lead to the spread of rumors and misinformation — and in this case, much of the information on social media is incorrect.

“We stand united to do what is best for this young man’s personal development and growth,” Taylor continued, "and to do what is best to uphold the values of our teams and our university at large.”

TOPEKA — The Kansas Geological Survey reported Wednesday groundwater levels in the High Plains Aquifer could be sustained for at least one decade in moisture-imperiled areas of western Kansas through pumping reductions of 18 percent to 32 percent.

The aquifer, the state’s most economically important groundwater resource, published a report summarizing regional conditions and options for prolonging life of the aquifer. The review documented benefits of voluntary water conservation in the state’s five groundwater management districts.

“Our results show that the only way to slow water-level declines is to reduce pumping in conjunction with modification of agricultural practices,” said Jim Butler, KGS senior scientist and one of the report’s co-authors. “As has been shown in Kansas and elsewhere, efficient irrigation technology must be coupled with a binding agreement to reduce pumping if we are to make a difference.”

The High Plains Aquifer underlies portions of eight states from South Dakota to Texas. It includes the Ogallala Aquifer of western Kansas and the Great Bend Prairie and Equus Beds aquifers in the south-central part of the state.

KGS, based at the University of Kansas, and the Kansas Department of Agriculture annually measure groundwater levels in 1,400 wells across the High Plains Aquifer.

Groundwater in the Ogallala portion of the aquifer, covering management districts one, three and four, dropped significantly since start of widespread irrigation of cropland in the 1940s. In some areas, less than 40 percent of the original aquifer thickness remains.

Analysis of data gathered in district one in west-central Kansas and district four in northwest Kansas show water conservation measures slowed decline in groundwater resources.

“The availability of more than 25 years’ worth of high-quality water-level and water-use data for the aquifer makes it possible to provide a sound assessment of the aquifer status,” said Donald Whittemore, KGS emeritus senior scientist and an author of the report.

In district four’s Sheridan County, the state’s first Local Enhanced Management Area realized water savings. KGS said 23 percent of the savings was attributed to irrigation efficiency with an additional 1 percent related to a decrease in irrigated area since 2013. LEMAs allow local stakeholders to develop plans to reduce irrigation pumping in a specified area.

Analysis by KGS showed a reduction in pumping in district one saved 24 percent on water consumption, with 10.5 percent associated with irrigation efficiency and 14 percent to decreases in irrigated acreage.

Wichita County, part of district one, experienced reductions in pumping of 40 percent as water levels in parts of the district fell so low large-scale irrigation was reduced or eliminated. Farmers are adjusting to the water shortage by reducing acreage, changing cropping patterns and adopting technologies to reduce water usage.

In management district three in southwest Kansas, which doesn’t have LEMAs, groundwater use since 2019 has been reduced almost 13 percent, KGS said.

In south-central Kansas, the Equus Beds aquifer in management district two has experienced stable water levels during the last 25 years. In district five in the Big Bend Prairie region, there was a slight decline in groundwater usage. The pumping reduction needed to achieve stable water levels in the fifth district is 1.6 percent, KGS said.

RILEY COUNTY —A Manhattan man died in an accident just before 8p.m. Tuesday in Riley County..

According to Riley County Police Department a&nbsp;2013 black Ford Focus driven by&nbsp; 33-year-old David Collins was westbound in the 800 Block of Deep Creek Road. The car&nbsp; left the roadway and crashed in the ravine.&nbsp;

He was pronoucned dead at the scene. The RCPD released no additional details.

RCPD: 2 suspects took $800 in merchandise from Target

WABAUNSEE COUNTY  —Law enforcement authorities are investigating additional reports of cattle theft in Kansas.

On November 17, 2023, the Pottawatomie County Sheriff’s Office took a report of five black Angus cattle allegedly stolen from the 17000 block of Onaga Road, Onaga, Kansas, according to a media release.

The cattle are branded on their left hip and also had white ear tags. All five of the stolen cows had calves, and the calves were still present but not the cows. They could have been taken anytime between May 15, 2023, and November 2, 2023. There were approximately 80 head in the pasture at the time of the crime.

In October, a dozen calves and a cow were stolen from from rancher Dan Oeding approximately 5 miles southeast of Wamego, according to the Wabaunsee County Sheriff. Livestock missing include Black Angus or Wagyu calves, one red calf and one Black Angus cow.

Anyone with information about the incident should contact the Wabaunsee County Sheriff at 785-765-3323. There is a reward offered&nbsp; for information that leads to the arrest of those who stole the cattle.

In August, Reno County Sheriff's Office said Circle H Cattle Company reported fifteen 400 to 500 pound calves stolen from the area of US 50 and Sterling Road, according to a social media report. The cattle went missing sometime between July 29, and August 6.

In mid-July, the Kansas Livestock Associated reported 17-head of 200-350 pound calves were stolen ten miles northeast of Atwood, according to a media release from the Rawlins County sheriff's office. The calves&nbsp; carried fresh brands of V arrow high on the right hip.

In April, the Sheridan County Sheriff's Department asked for the public's assistance in a case involving eighty 80 head of cattle missing from South of Hoxie, Kansas.

Just after 3:30p.m. Tuesday, officers filed a report for aggravated assault involving a 38-year-old female as the victim in the 1100 block of Yuma Street in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report

Police arrested 16-year-old&nbsp;Dylan Bloodworth of Manhattan on requested charges of aggravated assault. Bloodworth was transported to the Juvenile Intake Facility.&nbsp;

Riley County Arrest Report December 5

MANHATTAN - The Manhattan Fire Department will be training at Carlson Plaza, located at 425 Pierre Street for the next few weeks.

During training the fire crews will make use of theatrical smoke during the training drills.

Occasionally they will need to release the smoke from the building.

Manhattan Housing Authority is allowing the Manhattan Fire Department to make use of the facility for training.

RCPD: Theft reported from Manhattan Public Library

WYANDOTTE COUNTY —After many years at Tuttle Creek State Park&nbsp;near&nbsp; Manhattan and a 5-year run in Topeka, the Country Stampede announced it's new home Monday night.

Owners of the Country Stampede, JC Entertainment, provided a statement that concluded the process to find a new destination for the popular festival. 

 “The Country Stampede will keep its roots in the State of Kansas while moving closer to the Kansas City metro area.  This will provide a great opportunity to introduce new fans to the festival who haven’t had the opportunity to travel to its previous locations.

 The Country Stampede welcomes its core group of festival goers that have been with the event from the start and will continue to offer multiple day camping. The 2024 stampede will be held June 27-29. The venue is part of the Kansas City, Kansas tourism corridor that includes hotels, shopping, and restaurant entertainment just minutes away for fans attending the event.Owners of the Country Stampede, JC Entertainment, provided a statement that concluded the process to find a new destination for the popular festival. “The Country Stampede will keep its roots in the State of Kansas while moving closer to the Kansas City metro area. This will provide a great opportunity to introduce new fans to the festival who haven’t had the opportunity to travel to its previous locations. We are thankful to all of the municipalities and venues that inquired about hosting the event in their communities, but overall found Azura Amphitheater to provide the best fit. The Country Stampede welcomes its core group of festival goers that have been with the event from the start and will continue to offer multiple day camping. A Kick-Off Party on Thursday, June 27, 2024 will open the festival followed by two days of headliners on the main stage, Friday, June 28, and Saturday, June 29.”Artist announcements and ticket on-sale dates for the Country Stampede will take place before the end of December.

Just after 6p.m. Saturday, Ulta Beauty reported three unknown suspects took multiple items from the store. The estimated total loss associated with this case is approximately $2,000.&nbsp;

Just before 7p.m. Saturday, Dillards reported 3 unknown suspects took Michael Kors's bags and purses. The estimated total loss associated with this case is approximately $3,000.

RCPD: More thefts from stores in Manhattan Town Center

Just before noon Friday, officers filed a report for theft in the 2300 block of Stagg Hill Road in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report. Briggs Auto reported a known suspect took money from the company safe.
