LEONARDVILLE - The newest addition to the Riley County Emergency Medical Services(EMS) is a brand new EMS Station located in Leonardville.

On Saturday, October 14th, the community is invited to a ribbon cutting ceremony and open house starting at 10:00 a.m. The station is located at 506 E. Barton Road in Leonardville.

The new station will hold a full-time ambulance and crew, ready to respond to medical emergencies in the northern part of the county 24/7/365.

The facility includes an ambulance bay, two bedrooms, an office, a full bathroom and kitchen.

”As a Public Service leader, we are always excited when Riley County EMS can enhance our service to the community. This station will do just that,” said Riley County EMS Director David Adams.

Schultz Construction built the facility which was designed by Anderson Knight Architects, both of Manhattan.&nbsp;

The total budget for the new station including construction costs, materials, fixtures, and a new ambulance is $1.49 million. Funds from the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPS) paid for the project.

Riley County EMS is an Advanced Life Support service that answers approximately 5,500 calls for service in Riley County each year. It is the mission of Riley County Emergency Medical Service to support the people of Riley County, Kansas by pursuing excellence in pre-hospital healthcare, injury and illness prevention, and community outreach.

Scammers are using social media to go after your money and personal information. And it’s working: since 2021,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ftc.gov/news-events/news/press-releases/2023/10/ftc-data-shows-consumers-report-losing-27-billion-social-media-scams-2021">people have reported</a>&nbsp;losing $2.7 billion to scams that started on social media — way more than with any other contact method.

Scammers like social media because they can pretend to be someone they’re not. They can hack your profile, pretend to be you, and con your friends. They can target you and others using information from your profile like your age, hobbies, and what you buy. And they can do all this at little to no cost.

So what do social media scams often look like? Scammers might target you with an ad for something, but after you pay (for the thing that turns out to be fake), they take your money and run. Or they might try to sell you on a bogus investment opportunity (often involving cryptocurrency). Or they might send a friend request out of the blue and pretend to be a potential love interest. But then…they ask for money.

To avoid these and other scams on social media:

● Use your&nbsp;privacy settings&nbsp;to limit who can see your information and what you post.

●Don’t reply to messages that ask for money or personal information. Even if the message looks like it’s from a friend or family member, their account may have been hacked. Call them to check.

●Before you buy something,&nbsp;check out the company. Search online for its name along with words like “scam” or “complaint.”

FTC: That friend request could be from a scammer

MANHATTAN, KAN. – Meadowlark hosted a housewarming event Wednesday, Sept. 27, for its new 24-unit independent living apartment building located on the main campus in Manhattan. The new building is called The Monarch and is located on the southeast corner of Meadowlark Road and Meadowlark Circle.

&nbsp;All 24 apartments within the Monarch are sold and occupied. The sales process for the new building began in 2019 and the project was put on hold after the pandemic began in 2020. On March 16, 2022, the crew broke ground on the much-anticipated project.

The project was born from a Community Needs Assessment, that determined Manhattan needed and could support more age-and income-appropriate housing. People who are

considering a move to Meadowlark have indicated they enjoy the lifestyle that living on campus has to offer and would like to see a modern living option with high ceilings, lots of natural light, underbuilding parking, and pet friendly. The now completed Monarch building incorporates all these modern-living options and it is centrally located on Meadowlark’s campus, featuring two towers connected by a common space at the main level.

“Retirement living will continue to change,” said Lonnie Baker, CEO. “It is our priority at Meadowlark to continue evolving, ensuring the organization upholds its mission to meet the community needs and be a resource for the region and beyond.”

Baker appreciates the focused and dedicated efforts of Meadowlark’s Sales team during the entire process of designing, selling, and constructing the new building. “Abby Cavender, Doug Fiser, and Jayme Minton led the charge and successfully sold 23 of the 24 units before we even broke ground. They did a wonderful job, and we are proud to have them on our team.”

The Monarch building is another step in Meadowlark’s campus-expansion journey focused on wellness and enhancing lifestyle options and amenities. On Meadowlark’s campus there is a nature area at Bayer Pond and a trail system spanning the organization’s 55 acres.

Within the outdoor nature area, residents and families can enjoy a fishing pond, two pondside gazebos, a birding glen, wildflowers, and a variety of terrains throughout the trail system, which also features three bridges.

In July 2019, the courtyard, which is centrally located in the main building, was renovated and is now home to a fire pit, putting green, walking path, covered seating, outdoor dining options, and a bar and grill.

In August 2020, Meadowlark’s restaurant and pub expansion and kitchen renovation was completed. This project began before the COVID-19 pandemic broke out and because of its completion date falling in the middle of heightened precautions, the restaurant opened for in-person dining for the first time on Feb. 8, 2021. Prairie Star Restaurant has expanded its pub and dining space and added event space that can accommodate up to 250 people. The restaurant space is open to residents, families, and Meadowlark Passport members to come dine, drink, and gather.

A new medical office building was completed in December 2021 on Meadowlark’s land located off Tuttle Creek Boulevard next to the Blue Hills Shopping Center. CenterPointe Physicians, PA leases the 7,000 square foot clinic, continuing their community focus of primary care for all ages.

Meadowlark is a not-for-profit retirement community founded in 1980 by a group of local citizens and six Manhattan churches who wanted a better living option for older adults in the area. Today, Meadowlark continues to meet the needs of the community through living&nbsp;&nbsp;accommodations, post-acute care, home health care, outreach programs focused on memory support and Parkinson’s disease, and providing a supportive work environment for team members.

RILEY COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating alleged fraud in Manhattan.

Just after 2:30p.m. Thurday, officers filed a report for fraud in the 1000 block of Westloop Plaza in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

Kansas State Bank reported a known male suspect cashed 2 fraudulent checks at the bank in September and October. The estimated total loss associated with this case is approximately $3,000.&nbsp;

RILEY COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Kansas felon on new allegations after an arrest in Riley County.

Just after 4p.m. Thursday, police arrested 43-year-old Desie Chatfield of Hutchinson after being transported to the Riley County Police Department, according to the department activity report. 

Chatfield was arrested on a Riley County District Court warrant for probation violation. The original charge was for unlawful possession of a controlled substance. Chatfield is being held on a of $7,500 bond. 

He has previous convictions for domestic battery, aggravated domestic battery, criminal threat, criminal damage to property and for drugs, according to the Kansas Department of Corrections.

RILEY COUNTY —One person was injured in an accident just after 4:30p.m. Thursday in Riley County.

According to the Riley County Police Department activity report, a 2008 Ford Expedition driven by Chance Omli, 22, Manhattan struck a 2013 Hyundai Elantra driven by Travis Peters, 42, Havensville, in the 8200 block of Highway 24.

EMS transported Peters to Via Christi for treatment of his injuries. The RCPD released no additional details.

He talks about his hometown, his college experience, his love for sports broadcasting and the path he took to arrive in Junction City the middle of August this past summer to go to work for us. He currently covers a variety of news and sports events for the radio station and JC Post while also working as the "play-by-play" voice for Junction City High School Blue Jay football.

Barry Flinchbaugh, a beloved figure during a 49-year career in agricultural policy at Kansas State University and in national farm politics, was inducted posthumously into the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.aghalloffame.com/">National Agriculture Hall of Fame</a>&nbsp;on Oct. 5.

Flinchbaugh, who passed away in November 2020, was represented by his wife, Cathy, during ceremonies held in Bonner Springs, Kansas.

Flinchbaugh was well known as one of the country’s leading experts on agricultural policy and agricultural economics. For more than four decades, he was a top advisor to politicians of both major political parties, including Secretaries of Agriculture, chairs of the House and Senate Agriculture committees, and numerous senators and state governors.

He was involved to some degree in every U.S. Farm Bill written since 1968 and served on many national boards, advisory groups and task forces, providing input on domestic food and agricultural policy.

“When it comes to agricultural policy in Kansas, the United States and internationally, say one word -- Flinchbaugh -- and anyone who has been involved in any way with or studied agricultural policy in the last half century knows exactly who you are talking about," said Mike Seyfert, a former Flinchbaugh student who is currently the president and Chief Executive Officer of the National Grain and Feed Association.

"Barry was not political with a capital 'P', but his fingerprints were on virtually every piece of major agricultural legislationfor a 50-year period."

Kansas Secretary of Agriculture Mike Beam called Flinchbaugh "a continuous student of the current financial status of the American farmer."

"He was a shining example of being non-partisan and fact-based when reacting to agricultural policy concepts. His authority on agricultural issues made him a trusted advisor to many people in the policy arena."

Flinchbaugh served as chair of the Commission on 21st Century Production Agriculture, which was authorized in the 1996 Federal Activities Inventory Reform (FAIR) Act, also known as the Freedom to Farm Act.

"There were leaders who loved Barry and there were some who he made mad as hell," Seyfert remembers. "But they all agreed that he was one of the brightest minds he ever met."

Since coming to Kansas State University in 1971, Flinchbaugh taught a 400-level course in agricultural policy and served as an agricultural economist for extension. He taught more than 5,000 students, and his former students include governors, members of the house and senate, staff for agricultural trade organizations, lobbyists, professors, deans, county commissioners and school board members.

He is remembered for his impactful storytelling style and his tremendous commitment to his students and those he served throughout the state. Until his death in 2020, Flinchbaugh received approximately 100 speaking invitations a year and authored 100-plus publications, including an agricultural policy textbook.

"He was one of a kind; there will never be another Barry Flinchbaugh," said Ernie Minton, the Eldon Gideon Dean of K-State's College of Agriculture. "I don't believe any incoming faculty member would be able to pull off what Barry pulled off so expertly for so many years."

Flinchbaugh was inducted into this year’s National Agriculture Hall of Fame class alongside fellow Kansan Junius Groves, who was born into slavery but built a successful farm and other other businesses near Edwardsville, Kansas in the early 1900s; and Fabiola Cabeza de Baca, a Spanish-speaking pioneer in agriculture and the cooperative extension service in New Mexico prior to her death in 1991.

Cathy Flinchbaugh said her late husband "would just love" being recognized by the Hall of Fame.

"He was so involved with agriculture that this would be the highlight of his career," she said.

The National Agricultural Center and Hall of Fame was chartered by the U.S. Congress in 1960 to serve as the national agricultural museum and memorial to farming leaders. Its mission is to provide education on the historical and present value of American agriculture, and to honor leadership in agribusiness and academia.

 </figure>By PAT MELGARES KSRE&nbsp;Barry Flinchbaugh, a beloved figure during a 49-year career in agricultural policy at Kansas State University and in national farm politics, was inducted posthumously into the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.aghalloffame.com/">National Agriculture Hall of Fame</a>&nbsp;on Oct. 5.Flinchbaugh, who passed away in November 2020, was represented by his wife, Cathy, during ceremonies held in Bonner Springs, Kansas.Flinchbaugh was well known as one of the country’s leading experts on agricultural policy and agricultural economics. For more than four decades, he was a top advisor to politicians of both major political parties, including Secretaries of Agriculture, chairs of the House and Senate Agriculture committees, and numerous senators and state governors.He was involved to some degree in every U.S. Farm Bill written since 1968 and served on many national boards, advisory groups and task forces, providing input on domestic food and agricultural policy.“When it comes to agricultural policy in Kansas, the United States and internationally, say one word -- Flinchbaugh -- and anyone who has been involved in any way with or studied agricultural policy in the last half century knows exactly who you are talking about," said Mike Seyfert, a former Flinchbaugh student who is currently the president and Chief Executive Officer of the National Grain and Feed Association."Barry was not political with a capital 'P', but his fingerprints were on virtually every piece of major agricultural legislationfor a 50-year period."Kansas Secretary of Agriculture Mike Beam called Flinchbaugh "a continuous student of the current financial status of the American farmer.""He was a shining example of being non-partisan and fact-based when reacting to agricultural policy concepts. His authority on agricultural issues made him a trusted advisor to many people in the policy arena."Flinchbaugh served as chair of the Commission on 21st Century Production Agriculture, which was authorized in the 1996 Federal Activities Inventory Reform (FAIR) Act, also known as the Freedom to Farm Act."There were leaders who loved Barry and there were some who he made mad as hell," Seyfert remembers. "But they all agreed that he was one of the brightest minds he ever met."Since coming to Kansas State University in 1971, Flinchbaugh taught a 400-level course in agricultural policy and served as an agricultural economist for extension. He taught more than 5,000 students, and his former students include governors, members of the house and senate, staff for agricultural trade organizations, lobbyists, professors, deans, county commissioners and school board members.He is remembered for his impactful storytelling style and his tremendous commitment to his students and those he served throughout the state. Until his death in 2020, Flinchbaugh received approximately 100 speaking invitations a year and authored 100-plus publications, including an agricultural policy textbook."He was one of a kind; there will never be another Barry Flinchbaugh," said Ernie Minton, the Eldon Gideon Dean of K-State's College of Agriculture. "I don't believe any incoming faculty member would be able to pull off what Barry pulled off so expertly for so many years."Flinchbaugh was inducted into this year’s National Agriculture Hall of Fame class alongside fellow Kansan Junius Groves, who was born into slavery but built a successful farm and other other businesses near Edwardsville, Kansas in the early 1900s; and Fabiola Cabeza de Baca, a Spanish-speaking pioneer in agriculture and the cooperative extension service in New Mexico prior to her death in 1991.Cathy Flinchbaugh said her late husband "would just love" being recognized by the Hall of Fame."He was so involved with agriculture that this would be the highlight of his career," she said.The National Agricultural Center and Hall of Fame was chartered by the U.S. Congress in 1960 to serve as the national agricultural museum and memorial to farming leaders. The rivalry game between the Junction City Blue Jays and the Manhattan Indians is set for Friday night at Bishop Stadium in Manhattan.&nbsp;

Junction City is 3-2 heading into the matchup, with Manhattan's record being 4-1. Both teams have been defeated by Washburn Rural this season, with Junction City losing to the Junior Blues last week by a score of 28-7, and Manhattan lost to Rural two weeks ago by a score of 35-28.&nbsp;

Manhattan brings a high-powered offense into the game, led by quarterback Carter Aslin who has thrown for 611 yards on the year and also rushed the football for nearly 700 yards and eight touchdowns. Aslin and the Indian's offense will go up against a strong Blue Jay defense led by Michael Boganowski. Junction City has only given up two touchdowns in the past three games. (Last Friday, Washburn Rural had two special teams scores and a defensive score to go along with one offensive score.)

Manhattan has won the past two meetings, with Junction City picking up their last win in the rivalry in the 2020 season.&nbsp;

MANHATTAN —One person was injured in an accident just before 8p.m. Wednesday in Manhattan.

According to the Riley County Police Department activity report, 50-year-old Mary Ellis of Manhattan, fell off a Harley Davidson motorcycle driven by 43-year-old Jamie Smith of Manhattan, while making a turn at the intersection of Tuttle Creek Boulevard and Marlatt Avenue in Manhattan 

EMS transported&nbsp; Ellis to Via Christi for treatment of her injuries.&nbsp; The RCPD released no additional details.

Manhattan woman injured after fall from motorcycle

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2016 Ford F150 driven by Matthew Brent&nbsp;Dailey, 38, Manhattan, was eastbound on Interstate 70 one half mile west of Wanamaker.

The pickup rear-ended a 2005 Freightliner semi driven by&nbsp;Micha Lee Stahl, 53, Bennington, who was stopped in construction zone traffic. The impact pushed the semi into the back of 2023 Mack Truck driven by Khalib&nbsp;Butler, 31, Kansas City.&nbsp;

EMS transported Dailey to a Topeka hospital. Butler and Stahl were not injured. All three drivers were properly restrained, according to the KHP.

RILEY COUNTY —One. person was injured in an accident just after 5:30p.m. Tuesday in Riley County.

A 2020 Toyota truck driven by William Malcolm, 74, of Clay Center was traveling in the 6000 Block of Tuttle Creek Boulevard, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report. The truck traveled off the road and crashed. 

EMS transported Malcolm to Via Christi. He was then airlifted to Stormont Vail.&nbsp;

MANHATTAN - On Saturday, October 21st and Sunday, October 22nd, Sunset Zoo will host the annual Spooktacular family trick-or-treating event.

Sunset Zoo will be open from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. both days welcoming kids of all ages to participate in the event.

Tickets are required for entry during this event, and are granted for 2-hour windows to avoid overcrowding of the zoo.

The Sunset Zoo has been hosting Spooktacular for 32 years, combining the excitement of trick-or-treating with the exploration of the Zoo and its exhibits.

More than 20 trick-or-treat stations will be set up throughout the zoo's exhibits with a costume contest on Saturday and Sunday.

Tickets can be purchased online at <a href="https://sunsetzoo.com/262/SPOOKtacular">SunsetZoo.com/SPOOKtacular</a>&nbsp;or at the Sunset Zoo ticket booth.&nbsp;

Tickets are regular admission pricing of $6.00 for an adult (ages 12+) and $4.00 for children (ages 3-12), ages 2 and under are free.

FORT RILEY - On Saturday, October 7, 2023, Fort Riley will honor military retirees with the annual Retiree Appreciation Day.

All military retirees from all branches of military service, their spouses, widows or widowers are invited to Riley's Community Center.

Registration begins at 7:30 a.m. with presentations beginning at 8:30 a.m.

Information will be provided throughout the day on TRICARE, Medicare, Irwin Army Community Hospital services and other health issues, veterans' affairs, legislative issues, casualty affairs, long term care insurance and many other topics of concern to military retirees.

Additionally, many veterans service organizations will be on hand providing information to attendees.

Irwin Army Community Hospital will provide vaccinations from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. for those needing influenza, shingles, pneumonia and tetanus vaccinations.

Just before 4p.m. Monday, officers filed a report for theft in the 300 block of Tuttle Creek Boulevard in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report. 

&nbsp;Best Buy reported an unknown suspect took hard drives and other items from the business. 

The estimated total loss associated with this case is approximately $1,768.&nbsp;Anyone with information can contact&nbsp;<a href="https://www.rileycountypolice.org/287/Crime-Stoppers">Crime Stoppers</a>. Using Crime Stoppers allows you to remain anonymous and could qualify you for a cash reward of up to $1,000.
