U.S. Wheat Associates (USW) staff in Mexico City discussed the importance of the Mexican market to U.S. wheat farmers in mid-January with a visiting delegation of Kansas commodity groups led by U.S. Senator Roger Marshall (R-Kansas).

“The symbiotic relationship between U.S. wheat farmers and Mexican millers relies on the U.S. as a reliable supplier of high-quality wheat to the Mexican private milling sector,” said Mitch Skalicky, USW regional vice president. “We appreciate the Senator traveling to Mexico to learn more about our work in this top market and offer his support for expanding this successful partnership.”

Senator Marshall traveled with leaders from Kansas Wheat, Kansas Soybean, Kansas Sorghum, Kansas Corn, Kansas Dairy and the Kansas Grain and Feed Association. While in Mexico, Senator Marshall met with high-level Mexican government officials — including the Mexican Secretary of Agriculture — to discuss the importance of trade between the two countries and the shared role Kansas agriculture plays in feeding families across North America.

The delegation also met with private-sector businesses and associations operating in both Mexico and the U.S. to learn more about the economic and logistical partnerships powering trade between the two nations.

“Mexico is Kansas’ largest export market, and I traveled to Mexico City with Kansas commodity leaders to protect and expand opportunities for Kansas agriculture,” said Senator Marshall. “Under President Trump’s America First trade agenda, we’re going to fight for Kansas producers, demand fair treatment, and deliver real wins for our state. With USMCA renegotiations beginning this year, we’re focused on opening new doors for Kansas dairy and defending strong markets for Kansas wheat, sorghum, and corn — while enforcing fair trade rules and reducing the trade deficit.

Kansas Delegation Talks Successful Wheat Trade with Mexico

The delegation also met with Skalicky and Stephanie Bryant-Erdmann, USW assistant regional director, on Friday, January 16. The meeting covered a wide array of topics, ranging from the different wheat classes purchased by Mexico from the United States, the volume of Mexican wheat imports, the United States–Mexico–Canada Agreement (USMCA) and transportation economics related to the shipping of wheat by rail from the U.S. to Mexico.

The USW team also presented an overview of the Mexican market situation, specific trade data on wheat shipments from Kansas to Mexico and future opportunities to expand U.S.-Mexico wheat trade.

As of January 8, 2026, Mexico has purchased 3.39 MMT (nearly 124.6 million bushels) of U.S. wheat, an 6% increase from last marketing year. Mexico currently ranks as the top buyer of U.S. hard red winter (HRW) and soft red winter (SRW) wheat and the second-largest buyer of hard red spring (HRS) and durum.

Clay Schemm, a Kansas wheat farmer from Sharon Springs, participated in the trade mission as a representative of Kansas Wheat. He noted that the pride and professionalism in the Mexican milling industry, their appreciation for the quality of wheat produced in the United States and their desire to move more trains and trucks across the border even more efficiently to keep up with the country’s growing demand for wheat. He remarked that it was refreshing to see the same “salt of the earth” work ethic valued by U.S. farming communities mirrored in customers south of the border.

“My personal takeaway is that the Mexican people are a group I am proud to have as partners on the world stage,” Schemm said. “There is a kinship there—a friendliness and a desire to connect that makes it feel like a true North American culture. They are all-in on this partnership, and we should be too.”

Rep. Mann named the 2025 Wheat Leader of the Year Award

Just six weeks after finishing high school, Brian Walker wasn’t aiming for a high-powered job. He worked full-time at a gas station, living week to week, until a surprise phone call changed his path.

That call brought him to a flour mill and into an industry most people only think about when they buy bread. On a recent episode of the&nbsp;Wheat’s On Your Mind&nbsp;podcast, Walker talked with host Aaron Harries and Kansas Wheat CEO Justin Gilpin about the key moments in his 45-year milling career and what the wheat industry is really like.

Walker’s first job at Seaboard Allied Milling in Kansas City, Missouri, had an official title, assistant quality control manager, but the labor was hard and hands-on. He managed sample cans, moved samples through the lab and learned how wheat quality could affect everything from flour performance to baking consistency.

The schedule was even tougher than the work itself. Walker said he had to be there whenever the mill was running, even on weekends. In his first weeks, the mill shipped flour overseas in 140-pound jute bags and Walker worked six straight weeks without a day off, earning $4 an hour.

The job was demanding, but it gave Walker a close look at the wheat supply chain. Early on, he learned about crop surveys, wheat types and baking tests, building the skills that later took him to a 20-week course at the American Institute of Baking in Manhattan.

As Walker moved through jobs at Seaboard, Cargill, Ardent Mills, and Miller Milling, he watched the industry change through consolidation. He saw the early 1980s as a turning point, when more companies were bought out and competition became more strategic.

The changes went beyond new owners. Walker explained that consolidation also changed how people talked about crop quality. Millers used to meet and share information, but that became less common.

“All the millers would come openly talk about the crop, talk about the quality, where the issues were, where the opportunities were,” Walker said. “By the time 85, 86 rolled around… it became clear that… the work that you did on the crop, you kept to yourself and you used that as a competitive edge for your company.”

As the baking industry modernized, Walker said the pace and pressure increased. Big commercial bakeries ran longer and faster, needing more consistent wheat. At the same time, bakers started using new ingredients, moving away from potassium bromate to such as enzymes, which changed how they kept dough strong and loaves high quality.

These pressures affected farmers, too. Walker said that better wheat varieties, disease control, and new breeding tools helped the industry keep milling quality steady, especially as food safety issues like fusarium head blight and vomitoxin became bigger concerns.

Now living in Minnesota, Walker is still active in the wheat industry. He works with the National Wheat Foundation, stays involved with the Wheat Quality Council, and consults for U.S. Wheat Associates, which keeps him connected to both American farmers and flour customers around the world.

At the end of the episode, Walker shared the most important lesson since his early days in the mill: show up, work hard, and stay involved.

“You got to be willing to work. And you need to work hard,” Walker said. “Be involved… it’s a people business.”

Wheat quality and flour milling: Lessons from Brian Walker

The latest U.S. Department of Agriculture World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates (WASDE) report points to generally larger supplies and higher ending stocks for most major commodities in the 2025/26 marketing year, with prices under pressure in grains and oilseeds but firmer trends in cotton and some livestock sectors.

U.S. wheat supplies are projected slightly higher as beginning stocks were revised upward. Domestic feed and residual use is reduced, while exports remain unchanged. Ending stocks are forecast at 926 million bushels, up 8 percent from the previous year, pushing the season-average farm price down 10 cents to $4.90 per bushel.

Globally, wheat supplies, consumption, trade, and ending stocks all increase, driven by sharply higher production in Argentina and Russia, which more than offsets declines elsewhere.

The U.S. corn crop is forecast at a record 17.0 billion bushels on higher yields and expanded harvested acreage. Feed and residual use rises, but supplies grow faster than demand, boosting ending stocks to 2.2 billion bushels. Despite larger stocks, the season-average corn price is raised to $4.10 per bushel.

Worldwide, coarse grain production and stocks increase, led by a record corn crop in China.

U.S. rice supplies decline due to lower production and imports, while domestic and residual use rises to a record level. Exports are reduced on weaker sales, cutting ending stocks by 9 percent from last year. The all-rice season-average farm price increases 20 cents to $11.80 per hundredweight.

Globally, rice supplies and ending stocks rise, primarily on higher production and larger stocks in China and Japan.

U.S. soybean production increases modestly, but exports are lowered amid strong competition from Brazil. Ending stocks rise to 350 million bushels, contributing to a 30-cent drop in the projected season-average price to $10.20 per bushel.

Globally, soybean production and stocks increase, with Brazil’s crop boosted by favorable growing conditions.

U.S. sugar production is projected slightly higher, more than offsetting reduced imports. Ending stocks rise, increasing the stocks-to-use ratio. In Mexico, sugar production is higher than last year but below last month’s forecast due to harvest delays tied to weather impacts.

Red meat and poultry production forecasts are raised for 2025 and 2026, led by higher beef and pork output. Cattle prices for 2026 are raised on tighter fed cattle supplies, while hog prices remain steady. The all-milk price averages $21.15 per hundredweight in 2025 but is projected to decline to $18.25 in 2026.

U.S. cotton production is reduced due to lower yields, particularly in the Delta, tightening ending stocks and lifting the season-average farm price to 61 cents per pound. Globally, cotton production and ending stocks decline, reducing the global stocks-to-use ratio.

Overall, the January WASDE report highlights ample global supplies for most grains and oilseeds, keeping prices in check, while tighter conditions in cotton and selected livestock markets provide targeted price support.

USDA report shows larger grain supplies, mixed price outlook

A Kansas-developed wheat variety has been transformed into a one-of-a-kind trophy honoring Bill Snyder, blending Kansas State University research, farmer stewardship and K-State football tradition into a single handcrafted work of art.

American master straw artist Marian Vavra created the trophy using the KS Bill Snyder hard red winter wheat variety, released in 2023 through K-State and licensed by the Kansas Wheat Alliance. The trophy was hand-built entirely from the wheat straw itself and designed as a ceremonial tribute to Coach Snyder’s legacy and Kansas agriculture.

“This piece gave me a way to honor Coach Snyder while also honoring the researchers who breed wheat and the farmers who decide what seed to plant,” said Vavra. “It brings all of those stories together in one form.”

The project began during the 2025 Wheat Plot Tour at the K-State Research and Extension John C. Pair Horticultural Center, where Vavra first saw the KS Bill Snyder variety growing in the field. While most visitors discussed agronomic performance and yield potential, Vavra evaluated the wheat for artistic qualities such as straw strength, stem length, head shape and color.

Because research plots cannot be harvested, the wheat used for the trophy was sourced from licensed test fields near Yoder, Kansas. With permission from Kauffman Seed Company, Vavra hand-harvested six bundles of KS Bill Snyder wheat in June, using three bundles entirely to create the finished piece.

The upper tier of the trophy features fanned wheat heads and a straw star symbolizing the Kansas motto, Ad astra per aspera. The middle tier represents Kansas soil and the abundance held within each wheat head. The lower tier serves as the foundation and features a football medallion that transforms the piece into a recognizable trophy.

Every element of the football was made from the KS Bill Snyder wheat itself. Straw was flattened to create the football surface, while fine straw threads were spun and sewn to form seams and edging. Purple ribbon and trim were added as finishing touches to clearly mark the piece as a K-State tribute.

The back of the football documents the trophy’s creation, including the wheat’s harvest location, licensing and release through K-State research. While inspired by traditional straw techniques, the football design and K-State symbolism make the piece an original artistic work.

From Field to Trophy: Kansas Wheat Honors Coach Bill Snyder

The smell of oven-fresh bread and the conversations around it have defined Cindy Falk’s career for 40 years. As she retires from Kansas Wheat, Falk leaves behind a legacy built on education, outreach and a strong connection between Kansas wheat farmers and the consumers who use their product.

Falk began working with the Kansas Wheat Commission in 1985 when she received a phone call, asking her to become a volunteer Speak for Wheat spokesperson. That role grew into a full-time career focused on promoting wheat foods, home baking and science-based nutrition through classrooms, fairs, test kitchens and national organizations.

A central part of Falk’s work was the Kansas Wheat Commission recipe booklet. Beginning in 1988, she contributed to 37 editions, continuing a tradition that dates back to 1966. The booklets became a widely recognized Kansas Wheat resource, distributed across Kansas and nationally to represent wheat farmers and Kansas agriculture.

“I’ve thoroughly enjoyed this job, or I wouldn’t have continued for 40 years,” Falk said. “That one phone call truly changed my life.”

In addition to her work in Kansas, Falk played a major role in domestic wheat promotion through her leadership with the Wheat Foods Council. As public perceptions of grain foods shifted and fad diets gained attention, her priority continued to be science-based education and accurate nutrition information.

Raised on her grandparents’ wheat farm near Laclede, Kan., Falk brought a personal understanding of agriculture to every outreach effort. Whether working the Kansas State Fair booth or welcoming international visitors into the test kitchen, her goal was to help consumers better understand where wheat comes from.

“Consumers want to hear from the wheat farmer,” Falk said. “People like to ask questions and learn directly from the people involved.”

One of Falk’s most visible accomplishments was helping grow the Kansas Festival of Breads into the National Festival of Breads. What began as a state baking contest evolved into the nation’s only amateur yeast bread competition, drawing hundreds of entries from nearly every state and thousands of attendees during its in-person years in Manhattan. 

The event paired baking with education, giving finalists the opportunity to tour wheat farms, ride in combines during harvest and visit mills and elevators. Those experiences helped turn bakers into ambassadors for wheat and Kansas agriculture. The contest has continued as a fully remote baking competition. Participants submit recipes via email, and recipe testing and judging are conducted at the Kansas Wheat Innovation Center in Manhattan, Kan. 

As Falk enters retirement, she plans to spend more time with family, travel and continue teaching baking and food skills in her community. While her role with Kansas Wheat is ending, her connection to the wheat industry remains strong.

Kansas State University's&nbsp;<a href="https://www.k-state.edu/nabc/">National Agricultural Biosecurity Center</a>&nbsp;is expanding its role on the front lines of animal disease preparedness with a new U.S. Department of Agriculture grant that will immerse extension professionals in realistic outbreak planning across the central U.S.

With $211,248 in new support from USDA's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, the National Agricultural Biosecurity Center, or NABC, will lead a project called Region 7 Tabletops and Functional Workbooks for Extension Professionals. The effort is part of the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.aphis.usda.gov/funding/nadprp">National Animal Disease Preparedness and Response Program</a>, a Farm Bill initiative that is investing $15.3 million in 68 projects to strengthen animal health infrastructure, biosecurity, emergency planning, training and traceability nationwide.

From October 2025 through September 2027, NABC and its partners will design and deliver tabletop exercises — guided simulations that walk participants through potential foreign or emerging animal disease events — for extension professionals in Iowa, Kansas, Missouri and Nebraska. Extension agents, state officials and other stakeholders will work through evolving scenarios, practicing how to coordinate response actions, communicate risk and make time-sensitive decisions that protect livestock and the broader agricultural economy.

Alongside the exercises, the project team will produce functional workbooks that extension professionals can carry back to their counties and communities. These workbooks will include adaptable templates, checklists and planning tools that help local leaders tailor outbreak response strategies to their state and county regulations, species of concern and industry partners.

By combining discussion-based training with practical materials, NABC aims to strengthen how extension systems anticipate, coordinate and respond when an animal disease threat emerges. The project places a particular emphasis on improving communication and decision-making during simulated emergencies, so when a real crisis occurs, responders are already familiar with their roles, information pathways and resource needs.

Building a stronger regional network

Marty Vanier, director of the National Agricultural Biosecurity Center, said the project offers a chance to deepen relationships among extension professionals and response partners across state lines.

"Working together in shared exercises allows participants to identify gaps, compare approaches and build trust before an emergency, creating a more cohesive regional network when rapid, coordinated action is essential."

Over the coming months, NABC staff will collaborate with extension leaders in each Region 7 state to refine exercise objectives, recruit participants and pilot test the workbooks. Those partners are expected to include state departments of agriculture, land-grant university specialists, and emergency management agencies that bring additional expertise in surveillance, incident command and public communication.

The new project adds to a growing portfolio of National Animal Disease Preparedness and Response Program awards at K-State. In recent funding cycles, the National Agricultural Biosecurity Center has earned multiple grants for work ranging from livestock movement analysis to emergency planning and stakeholder outreach, with total awards now exceeding $900,000 to advance national and regional preparedness.

Kansas delivered a strong hard red winter&nbsp;wheat&nbsp;crop in 2025, producing more than 340 million bushels as timely late-spring rains helped fields rebound from earlier drought stress. Harvest ran later than normal due to frequent storms, but test weight and falling number concerns proved minimal, and most disease pressures like stripe rust, leaf rust and&nbsp;wheat&nbsp;streak mosaic stayed localized. While protein levels came in slightly lower than recent drought years, overall yield and grain quality across Kansas reflected a resilient crop supported by improved moisture.

The 2025 report is supported by funding from the USDA’s Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS) export market development programs and USW’s state&nbsp;wheat&nbsp;commission members. The report includes class-specific information, starting with samples collected during harvest. Those samples are then sent to six partner laboratories across the United States, who conduct rigorous testing and analysis. This year’s report includes expanded extensograph testing and additional RVA (Rapid Visco Analyser) flour data for both soft and hard winter&nbsp;wheat.

The results are then compiled into the Crop Quality Report, which provides grade, non-grade, flour and specific end-product data. For example, this year’s report included additional data on sponge cake performance for soft red winter&nbsp;wheat. Overall, across all classes, global buyers will find U.S.&nbsp;wheat&nbsp;to be a consistent and reliable foundational ingredient for&nbsp;wheat-based food products.

Shawn Thiele, associate director of the IGP Institute, will join Casey Chumrau, CEO of the Washington Grain Commission, and Senay Simsek, food science department head at Purdue University, for the crop quality seminar series in South America.&nbsp;

From November 3 to 10, the trio presented to key customers and stakeholders in Peru, Colombia, Ecuador and Chile. These markets have purchased substantially more U.S.&nbsp;wheat&nbsp;in the current marketing year than in years prior, thanks to the competitiveness of U.S.&nbsp;wheat&nbsp;in the world marketplace and USW's technical assistance and trade servicing activities, like the crop quality seminars.

Justin Gilpin of Kansas Wheat, Josh Roe of Kansas Corn, Caleb Little of Kansas Soybeans and Adam York of Kansas Grain Sorghum outlined the roles of Kansas commodity commissions and the separate, dues-funded associations that handle advocacy. The group walked through how farmer dollars support research, market development and education while associations carry out policy work in Washington, D.C. and Topeka.

They also compared Kansas’ realities with the I-states, pointing to different climate, infrastructure and biofuel dynamics. The conversation kept circling back to a Kansas advantage: farmers who raise multiple crops and organizations that plan together on markets, research and water.

That statewide perspective comes from working shoulder to shoulder.&nbsp;

“Whether it’s research at K-State or joint market development abroad, we’re all working toward the same mission: helping farmers succeed,” Gilpin said. “We face different challenges, but we share the same fields and communities.”

The CEOs highlighted the strength of Kansas research leadership, especially through Kansas State University’s College of Agriculture. From developing wheat varieties resistant to disease and drought to improving sorghum genetics through the Center for Sorghum Improvement, farmer-funded checkoff dollars are driving real results. Investments in research partnerships across K-State departments help create practical, farmer-focused innovation.&nbsp;

“Research is the long game, but it’s also the clearest return farmers can see from their checkoff,” Gilpin said. “Every new variety, pest study or efficiency breakthrough helps keep Kansas agriculture competitive.”

Still, short-term challenges remain. Commodity prices are down across the board while input costs stay high, tightening farm margins heading into 2026. The CEOs agreed that while farmers prefer markets over aid, short-term relief may be necessary until the new farm bill provisions take effect. Roe added that Kansas producers are facing gluts in corn and soybeans, while international trade slowdowns have hit sorghum and wheat exports.

“Farmers are survivors,” York said. “Getting through this next year means focusing on efficiency, maintaining markets and making sure policy decisions reflect Kansas reality.”

Each Kansas commodity group operates a farmer-elected checkoff commission that invests producer dollars back into research, education and market development. The Kansas Wheat Commission, established in 1957 through the Kansas Wheat Act, collects a state assessment of two cents per bushel of wheat sold. Those funds support programs like the Kansas Wheat Innovation Center, international trade through U.S. Wheat Associates and research collaborations at Kansas State University.

Similarly, all four Kansas commodity commissions are funded through checkoff collection at the first point of sale. These funds are used for promotion, research and market development; however, checkoff funds aren’t used for lobbying or political advocacy; the separate dues-funded grower associations handle those efforts.

Wheat Scoop: Kansas agriculture works better together

China’s agreement to purchase 180,000 metric tons of soybeans from this year’s U.S. crop could mark one of the biggest agricultural trade developments in years — and Kansas producers stand to gain in a major way.

According to Senator Roger Marshall, the deal represents roughly $15 billion in U.S. soybean exports nationwide and could generate around $1 billion annually for Kansas soybean farmers. Kansas sorghum producers are also expected to benefit, with an estimated additional $1 billion in sorghum sales.

“Kansans grow about half of the entire sorghum crop for the country, and believe it or not, China typically purchases about 80 percent of that,” one official said. “This is the biggest news we’ve had in agriculture in years.”

The deal, reached during President Donald Trump’s recent overseas visit, is being hailed as a breakthrough in reopening key markets in China and Southeast Asia. The agreement is also seen as a potential boost for other major Kansas industries, including aerospace.

"China is sitting there. They can buy Boeing jets, or they can buy Air France jets” Marshall said. "We're the ones here that are buying all of your T shirts and tennis shoes and your televisions and your iPhones, all these types of things. So, I think it's going to mean a lot to to multiple industries across the state of Kansas, agriculture and aerospace, leading the way"

Beyond agriculture, the agreement may signal a broader thaw in U.S.-China relations. Marshall believes that President Xi Jinping is expected to hold additional talks with President Trump.&nbsp; &nbsp;

"I don't doubt that President Xi will make some type of a trip here to America, and then, as these other world conferences happen from time to time that they're both there, I expect them to build upon this relationship." Marshall said.

Some observers say the move could also help stabilize global markets and ease tensions across Southeast Asia. "You know when there is, when there is world peace, the entire economy, the world economy grows as well." Marshall added.&nbsp;

China's soybean purchase could bring $1B to Kansas ag economy annually

Recent rains have brought much-needed soil moisture across Kansas, improving prospects for fall wheat stands. But the same weather that restored soil moisture has also slowed progress, leaving many farmers behind schedule.

In central Kansas, Derek Sawyer, chairman of the Kansas Wheat Commission, said planting progress in his area is only about halfway complete. Sawyer stated that KS Providence and AP Prolific are among the most commonly planted varieties this season for his area.

“Acres are fairly steady so far, but overall I think acres will be down because fall harvest has been delayed,” Sawyer said. “We’re up against the deadline for double-cropping behind corn or beans.”

According to K-State wheat production specialist Romulo Lollato, recent rainfall has provided strong moisture reserves, though planting remains well behind normal.&nbsp;

“We’ve received quite a bit of rain the last two weeks, with parts of the state close to five inches,” Lollato said. “Once fields dry, that moisture sets us up for good stand establishment.” He added that statewide planting progress is about half the long-term average for this date.

While moisture conditions are favorable, the season has also brought reports of fall armyworms. Damage has been mostly to early-grazing wheat, but growers are encouraged to watch for pressure on emerging stands. Lollato said fields can often recover if the pressure drops quickly, but replanting may be necessary in heavily affected areas.

In northwest Kansas, Chris Tanner, president of the Kansas Association of Wheat Growers, wrapped up drilling by mid-October. He said planted acres in his area are likely down this year after some producers delayed planting due to armyworm pressure. Tanner seeded AP Sunbird and KS Bill Snyder, noting that recent rains made conditions ideal for finishing the job.

“After a dry stretch like we’ve had, it feels great to drill into this kind of moisture,” Tanner said.

Concerns about wheat streak mosaic virus (WSMV) remain high as cooler weather slows volunteer control. K-State wheat pathologist Kelsey Andersen Onofre said later flushes of volunteer wheat near planting are generally lower risk.&nbsp;

“If that green bridge is gone, curl mites are likely gone too because they need living tissue,” Onofre said. K-State continues to offer free testing for volunteer wheat and grassy hosts for the wheat streak complex, helping farmers assess risk and plan management.

K-State’s Agronomy e-Update reports that planting in late October to early November remains acceptable in southeast and far south-central Kansas but is considered late in other areas and falls beyond full crop insurance coverage. Research from Garden City shows that delaying planting from October 1 to November 1 can delay heading by six days and reduce yield by about 23 percent.

To offset the effects of late planting, agronomists recommend increasing seeding rates, maintaining a planting depth of 1 to 1.5 inches, and applying starter phosphorus fertilizer with the seed. About 20 to 30 pounds per acre of phosphorus is advised to promote early growth and tillering. Grain-only wheat requires little nitrogen in the fall - roughly 20 to 30 pounds per acre is sufficient until spring topdress.

As fields begin to dry, producers across Kansas are expected to move quickly to wrap up planting. Despite delays, this fall’s moisture could help set the stage for strong stands heading into winter. The 2025 theme, “Cooperatives Build a Better World,” highlights how agricultural cooperatives continue to evolve to meet the needs of their farmer member-owners. Just as Kansas farmers adopt new technologies and management practices, agricultural cooperatives invest in infrastructure, leadership programs and services to help their members succeed.

“Local farmer-owners of Kansas cooperatives are the backbone of the Wheat State,” said Russell Plaschka, president and CEO of the Kansas Cooperative Council, the organization that has represented the cooperative business model in the Sunflower State since 1944. “When we talk about a circular economy, cooperatives exemplify this through the cooperative principle of concern for community. The majority of the dollars generated from wheat and other commodities typically stay local, supporting local economies and helping sustain our rural communities into the future.”

The Kansas Cooperative Council represents cooperatives across all sectors, including agriculture, finance, utilities, housing and more. The organization provides education, advocacy and public outreach to promote the cooperative business model and strengthen the network of member-owned organizations throughout Kansas.

Wheat Scoop: October is National Co-op Month

A Kansas startup is putting wheat at the center of a biotechnology breakthrough that could change how medicines are made and delivered worldwide.

Tritica Biosciences, founded by husband and wife team Dr. Chris and Brandi Miller, is using wheat germ, the tiny embryo inside the kernel, to power a process called cell-free protein synthesis. In simple terms, they have figured out how to turn wheat germ into a shelf-stable “factory” that makes proteins on demand.

The key is Tritica’s ability to separate and preserve the wheat embryo intact. Unlike traditional milling byproducts that quickly go rancid, their process keeps embryos stable at room temperature. From there, the embryos are converted into an extract that can begin producing proteins when supplied with the right DNA instructions.

One example is insulin. Instead of relying on centralized production, hospitals or clinics could one day make insulin locally by adding water and the correct DNA to wheat germ extract.

“The seed goes in the soil and that embryo has to have every resource that it's going to take to get through the soil until it can get a leaf up and start photosynthesis,” Chris Miller said. “It's packed with concentrated machinery. You couldn’t go take leaves or grass clippings and do what we do. It’s really specific to the embryo.”

“In a nutshell, we can put in DNA for human insulin and the machines will pick up that instruction set and make it immediately,” Chris Miller said.

The Millers believe the applications reach far beyond pharmaceuticals. Their process has already shown success with enzymes, human DNA and even food-related proteins.

“We don’t even know fully, to be honest. We are just getting started,” Brandi Miller said. “Our big focus right now with the ARPA-H project is pharmaceuticals, but we think it’s endless. As Chris mentioned, we’ve had success with enzymes and even human DNA. It’s just a matter of optimization.”

The work is backed by a $29 million federal grant from ARPA-H, the Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health. Tritica is partnering with other biotech firms to refine the process and test its potential in real-world health care settings.

For Kansas farmers, the technology offers another way wheat could improve lives. The leftover grain from Tritica’s process can still be milled into flour, meaning nothing is wasted. The system also avoids toxic byproducts or wastewater.

“How cool would it be to think about using Kansas wheat to manufacture insulin,” Brandi Miller said. “If a farmer could grow a particular variety of wheat just for that purpose, it would be an incredible story for agriculture and health care.”

While the startup is still small, with just a handful of scientists working east of Manhattan, the Millers say the long-term potential is enormous. Beyond medicine, future uses could include animal nutrition, cosmetics and other industries that rely on proteins.

Tritica Biosciences began in a converted barn and has already outgrown multiple facilities. With support from ARPA-H and Kansas partnerships, the company is scaling up production and exploring how specific wheat varieties may perform in the process.

The Millers say their vision is simple: using Kansas-grown wheat to make life-saving products more accessible and sustainable.

Popping a kernel of wheat in your mouth for a quick chew to test quality is almost instinctive, whether you are a Kansas farmer or the leader of a major East African conglomerate. Exploring a shared emphasis on wheat quality, as well as exploring the U.S grain production, handling and marketing systems, was the goal of a Tanzanian trade delegation that traveled to Kansas earlier this week.

The team was organized by U.S. Wheat Associates (USW) with support from Kansas Wheat. Team members included two members of the Bakhresa Group, a diversified, family-owned and operated business in East Africa that operates in agro-processing, food and beverages, packaging, logistics, media, marine transport and more. Bakhresa is the largest grain milling company in East Africa with operations in nine countries, including Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, Malawi, Mozambique, Zambia, Rwanda, Burundi, Zimbabwe and South Africa.

After starting their mission in South Dakota, the team traveled to Kansas and visited the USDA Federal Grain Inspection Service (FGIS), the Kansas Wheat Innovation Center, and the IGP Institute. They also met with grain suppliers, handlers and exporters. The team aimed to gather firsthand information on U.S. wheat production and to gain a deeper understanding of the U.S. grain marketing system.

East Africa relies on imports of wheat to produce a wide range of daily bread products, from traditional mandazi, a fried bread eaten for breakfast, to newly introduced products like instant noodles. Russia has historically supplied more than 50% of imports; however, companies like Bakhresa are exploring ways to diversify their suppliers.

The team went to Justin Knopf’s machine shop near Gypsum to discuss everything from tractors to the dynamics of working in a family-owned business. For Knopf, a fifth-generation farmer who works alongside his father and brother, connecting with customers not too far removed from himself in the grain supply chain gave him goosebumps.

“The relationships between U.S. farmers and these gentlemen running a family business providing flour and baked goods in East Africa are significant to me,” Knopf said. “It’s meaningful to know that they probably have very similar conversations on a day-to-day basis as my brother, dad and I have. Even though it’s a different type of business, the conversations and the values are the same.”

Of course, the Bakhresa team members eagerly reached into the bucket of U.S. hard red winter (HRW) wheat Knopf had ready, even chewing a kernel or two, and noting the wheat’s premium quality.

“They were very pleased with the wheat sample from my field and my farm,” Knopf said. “That’s very reaffirming, and it gives me more motivation and inspiration for that mindset of continuous improvement. We are making sure that we are producing this type of product that when a team like this visits our farm, they want to pop it in their mouth and sample it.”

That positive impression carried through to an immediate sale. At the end of their visit to Kansas, Bakhresa purchased 5,000 metric tons (MT) (nearly 184,000 bushels) of U.S. hard red winter (HRW) for use in their Durban, South Africa mill.

From Kansas, the team will continue on to visit export facilities in Houston before attending an international baking exposition in Nevada. The Bakhresa leaders will return home having gained valuable insights into U.S. wheat quality, production and marketing systems, which will foster new connections and future business partnerships. For farmers like Knopf, missions like this one underscore the importance of considering the needs of international customers when making decisions on his farm.

“I am grateful because I learn something every time that we host a trade team or international visitors on our farm,” Knopf said. “I like to hear about what’s on their mind, what’s important in their business and their values, because that matters to me.”

“The team members were very knowledgeable, incredibly intelligent and asked great questions. They are the type of people that I would like to learn from and do business with.”

Wheat Scoop: East African delegation explores U.S. wheat advantage in Kansas

Earlier this week, U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Brooke L. Rollins alongside Tennessee Governor Bill Lee, Senator Marsha Blackburn, Senator Bill Hagerty, Representative John Rose, and U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Deputy Secretary Stephen Vaden, announced USDA will no longer fund taxpayer dollars for solar panels on productive farmland or allow solar panels manufactured by foreign adversaries to be used in USDA projects. 

Subsidized solar farms have made it more difficult for farmers to access farmland by making it more expensive and less available. Within the last 30 years, Tennessee alone has lost over 1.2 million acres of farmland and is expected to lose 2 million acres by 2027. This problem is not just in Tennessee, since 2012, solar panels on farmland nationwide have increased by nearly 50%. That is why the Department is taking action.&nbsp;

“Our prime farmland should not be wasted and replaced with green new deal subsidized solar panels. It has been disheartening to see our beautiful farmland displaced by solar projects, especially in rural areas that have strong agricultural heritage. One of the largest barriers of entry for new and young farmers is access to land. Subsidized solar farms have made it more difficult for farmers to access farmland by making it more expensive and less available,”&nbsp;said Secretary Brooke Rollins. “We are no longer allowing businesses to use your taxpayer dollars to fund solar projects on prime American farmland, and we will no longer allow solar panels manufactured by foreign adversaries to be used in our USDA-funded projects.”&nbsp;

This action will rapidly eliminate the market distortions and costs imposed on taxpayers by reducing energy subsidies and builds upon the repeal of and modifications to wind, solar, and other “green” energy tax credits in the One Big Beautiful Bill Act. It will further USDA’s determination to end taxpayer support for unaffordable and unreliable “green” energy sources and ensure the supply chain consists of American products and manufacturing.&nbsp;

Effective immediately, USDA will implement the following programmatic actions:&nbsp;

• For the USDA Rural Development Business and Industry (B&amp;I) Guaranteed Loan Program wind and solar projects are not eligible.

•For the USDA Rural Development Rural Energy for America Program Guaranteed Loan Program (REAP Guaranteed Loan Program), USDA will ensure that American farmers, ranchers and producers utilizing wind and solar energy sources will install units that are right-sized for their facilities. If project applications include ground mount solar photovoltaic systems larger than 50kW or ground mount solar photovoltaic systems that cannot document historical energy usage, they will no longer be eligible for the REAP Guaranteed Loan Program, and priority points will no longer be given for REAP grants.

Subsidized solar farms have made it more difficult for farmers to access farmland by making it more expensive and less available. Within the last 30 years, Tennessee alone has lost over 1.2 million acres of farmland and is expected to lose 2 million acres by 2027. This problem is not just in Tennessee, since 2012, solar panels on farmland nationwide have increased by nearly 50%. That is why the Department is taking action.&nbsp;<figure>

AG Secretary Rollins blocks taxpayer funding of solar farms on prime farmland 

August 20, 2025 - The Kansas Soybean Association is calling all soybean farmers in Kansas to enter their competitive soybean crop into the Kansas Soybean Yield Contest. Also open for entries is the statewide Kansas Soybean Value Contest, which analyzes protein, oil and other soybean qualities. Strong participation across the state provides a snapshot of growing conditions in each region and allows friendly competition among peers.

“This contest allows farmers to showcase the practices that maximize yield on their farm” said Dr. Sarah Lancaster, K-State Weed Extension Specialist and an Association board member. “To see how farmers manage challenges to have successful crops in conditions they can’t control is always impactful to see.”

 </figure>“This contest is a great opportunity for us to support KSA and we see the value it brings farmers,” said Brian Laverentz from FMC. “Raising top yielding soybeans is often a systems approach. Many of these farmers rely on FMC products to be effective in raising their crops and we want to show our appreciation for that. We love the comradery these contests bring and getting to recognize and honor farmers across the state.” Yield contest districts are determined by region, tillage method and irrigation status, with a total of 18 districts in consideration. Farmers may enter multiple categories, but only one entry per field.Eligible fields must consist of at least five contiguous acres as verified by the Farm Service Agency, GPS printout or manual measurement. A non-relative witness, either Kansas State Research and Extension personnel or a specified designee, must be present at harvest and should ensure that the combine grain hopper is empty prior to harvest. Official elevator-scale tickets with moisture percentage and foreign matter included must accompany entries to be considered.<figure>

 </figure>The Kansas Soybean Commission sponsors a monetary prize for the top three finishers in each district, as well as an additional $1,000 for the overall dryland and irrigated winners and any who top the new 126.6 bushel-per-acre record, set last year by McClain Family Farms, LLC. Each district winner receives $300, second receives $200, and third receives $100.Individuals looking to submit a value contest entry should send a 20-ounce sample, which is evaluated by Ag Processing, Inc., to determine the value. Monetary awards are also given to the three highest-value entries.Farmers may enter both the yield and value contests. The top yield entry and top value entry, as well as one randomly drawn entry who enters both contests, will earn a trip to the 2026 Commodity Classic set for February 25-27 in San Antonio.
